There's an article about this in the Times today by Libby Purves, provoked by Lionel Shriver's portrayal of the boy in 'We need to talk about Kevin'

Just thought you'd like to know Smile

Now twisting what a man has said to make him sound mean and threatening when he obviously wasn't. Amazing stuff girls you should be proud of yourself.

Is tyr a man? Didn't realise.

It does seem a bit strange to say to one poster "don't fall down the stairs" and another "don't choke on your food", I mean that's just proper odd.

Tyr · 12/06/2011 18:32

AliceWhirled Sun 12-Jun-11 18:20:11

Bit of a pattern Tyr. You said to someone the other day 'don't fall down the stairs'. Why does that kind of language come so easily to you?

Alice,
Was that not someone who said they were going off to bed after drinking quite a bit?
Just concern for their wellbeing, nothing more..........

AliceWhirled · 12/06/2011 18:33

Where has it been twisted? I stated what was said and asked a question. If you're spotting anything problematic that makes Tyr appear 'mean and threatening' then think about why that is.

SardineQueen · 12/06/2011 18:34

Tyr problem is that a lot of women on this site hold feminist views, many of them identify themselves as feminists, others have the views but do not use the name.

What are you going to do? I mean, it's terrible isn't it. Women talking amongst themselves about all the shitty things going on. And OH LOOK! It's men who are causing all the trouble. Wonder why that might he

SardineQueen · 12/06/2011 18:36

Ooooh I know let's talk about the mass rape in Darfur and the laws in Saudi and the marrying off of underage girls all over the place and the trafficking of women and girls in the sex trade and all sorts of things without mentioning men! And see how far we get...

Right then. Rape in Darfur anyone, and how it's nothing to do with men.

Sardinequeen,

Apparently so; apparently, also a MRA (which had to be explained) and is rather funny, truth be told.

SardineQueen · 12/06/2011 18:37

So you aren't a man. Or you are? Not that I care much either way TBH.

Maybe you can kick off the conversation about rape as a weapon of war in Darfur. Without mentioning men, obviously.

sparky246 · 12/06/2011 18:44

thank fuck i took dittany seriously[i didnt at first]
if it wasnt for her i would of been sitting here now rather flatchested and probably suicidal after falling into a patriarchial trap.

Tyr · 12/06/2011 18:45

Sardinqueen,

If you want a conversation about it, why not start it yourself? (I'm not being rude)
I condemn it outright as I do the men who carry it out. I think that is pretty clear.

SardineQueen · 12/06/2011 18:49

Shock tyr you said men are horrible you silly old manhater you.

SardineQueen · 12/06/2011 18:50

Honestly are you a bit dim? What is your point on this thread?

Tyr · 12/06/2011 18:55

Did I? If you consider how you have twisted what I did say, you'll understand my point on this thread.

slug · 12/06/2011 19:03

I can't help hearing a whiney teenager's voice whenever I read Tyr's 'repeat and dismiss' arguments.

Catmilk · 12/06/2011 19:03

"The story of history is a story of mirrors. It is not a tale scribed by victors on bloody battlefields. Nor is it told by professors or preachers. Instead, it is the story of white men seated on greasy couches, watching late-night television with reddened eyes. Regardless of their station, their individual qualities during the day, they are all men who are given the sanction to imagine themselves as victors, links in a long chain, merely by looking the part. They see a reflection of their own personalities in the great generals and emperors of the past. Others, in their eyes, exist outside of such thrilling legacies. To them, the human record is filtered through an ego-colored glass that first rendered God as a man and then his Son as a white one. The history of dominance that they recall?some of it real, much of it pure fantasy?translates into contemporary power for those who are able to borrow authority from its hallowed vaults. Belonging to a social class with not just historic power but the power to control history can go a long way in making up for personal shortcomings."

Again - if this supposedly applies to modern men, how would it not also describe white people? Answer please, it's not a rhetorical question.

sparky246 · 12/06/2011 19:04

nope-dittany saved my life.
sorry-this might be a bit too deep for you Tyr.

flippinada · 12/06/2011 19:08

Catmilk, do you think you could address my post from this morning at 10.40?

I would like you to explain how you claim to the rather startling conclusion that everyone on MN is a man hater.

Thank you.

SybilBeddows · 12/06/2011 19:18

'Again - if this supposedly applies to modern men, how would it not also describe white people? Answer please, it's not a rhetorical question.'

It does. Isn't it obvious? Why do you think postcolonial history came about?
As white people we have to rethink our history, whether political or cultural, understanding the huge biases in the way it has been written. And many historians I know spend their time doing exactly that.

I always suspect that women who call themselves feminists who obviously aren't, like catmilk, do so because they know that doormats are unattractive to some men and they are excited by a "damned spirited filly".

Being a spirited filly in order to gain approval from men, isn't actually feminism though, catmilk.
