There's an article about this in the Times today by Libby Purves, provoked by Lionel Shriver's portrayal of the boy in 'We need to talk about Kevin'

Just thought you'd like to know Smile

Using your Thatcher example which is absolutely stonking in terms of evidence of what I just said above;

Statement A - Thatcher is indeed a well know example of a female PM who behaved in ways that were oppressive. Indeed she oppressed whole groups.

Statement B - She is also the only female PM the UK has ever had.

A does not negate B and make the patriarchy magically disappear.

Whaaaat???????

SardineQueen · 12/06/2011 17:31

"Don't choke on your popcorn" is like a bad threat from an eastenders style hardman. What a very peculiar thing to say.

I can do it too.

Mind how you go.

See!

Tyr · 12/06/2011 17:37

Sardinequeen,

It was in reference to this:

Loving your work, by the way.

And no, it wasn't meant to be threatening. You, on the other hand, have made me feel distinctly uneasy and fearful with your gruff voice and pointed stare.

Yes I know.

If someone says they are going to eat something, saying to them "Don't choke on it" is a standard threat type thing, unless the person concerned is a toddler.

It was an odd thing to say. I don;t think you actually want beachcomber to choke, I just think it was odd.

aliceliddell · 12/06/2011 17:50

It was me, actually. And I don't care, because I won't choke on mere popcorn when I habitually gnaw on the dismembered body parts of any man (pah!) foolish enough to fall into the pit of sharpened bamboo dug by the lesbian man-haters collective every Saturday night after we've been down to report random men for 'raping' us. We do these things because we are feminists.

Tyr · 12/06/2011 17:52

"Looking at men as a group and examining their behaviour as a group is "misandrist" (posh made-up anti-feminsit word for man-hating) now is it?"

Actually, I can see how the word might seem "posh" to you.

You probably eat toast with your bare hands too. Scary stuff.

SardineQueen · 12/06/2011 17:55

Try this MRAtyr:

Misandry - From the Dictionary of Fools

Might help you to get your head around it.

Wonderful stuff, Millie Tant. Keep it coming. Still working up a froth to that other great source of wisdom, the "Malleus Maleficarum?"

Dittany,

Sorry, I just can't take you seriously at all. At any rate, you seem to take yourself so seriously as to leave no room for anyone else to do so.

SardineQueen · 12/06/2011 18:12

Your loss tyr.

Lots of people do Smile

"The story of history is a story of mirrors. It is not a tale scribed by victors on bloody battlefields. Nor is it told by professors or preachers. Instead, it is the story of white men seated on greasy couches, watching late-night television with reddened eyes. Regardless of their station, their individual qualities during the day, they are all men who are given the sanction to imagine themselves as victors, links in a long chain, merely by looking the part. They see a reflection of their own personalities in the great generals and emperors of the past. Others, in their eyes, exist outside of such thrilling legacies. To them, the human record is filtered through an ego-colored glass that first rendered God as a man and then his Son as a white one. The history of dominance that they recall?some of it real, much of it pure fantasy?translates into contemporary power for those who are able to borrow authority from its hallowed vaults. Belonging to a social class with not just historic power but the power to control history can go a long way in making up for personal shortcomings."

I assume the same holds true of all the white women on this board/in the country concerning their past domination over lesser races? The mythologizing, the assurance of superiority dictated by the blood of history, the yearning for the same power again, the glories of domination still making their hearts race and fuelling all their hopes and fears for the future? No?

Catmilk · 12/06/2011 18:19

Anybody who thinks that scenario describes many men these days hates men. It's that simple.

AliceWhirled · 12/06/2011 18:20

Bit of a pattern Tyr. You said to someone the other day 'don't fall down the stairs'. Why does that kind of language come so easily to you?

And guffaw at the idea that people don't take Dittany seriously. It's the very fact that they do that keeps you posting here.
