Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

So what would our slogan be?

We would quite like a slogan to go on the banner for marches, and I thought it would be nice to discuss it more widely than just the feminist crafters.

Suggestions so far:

The hand that rocks the cradle can [also] change the world

Agitate, educate, organise (this was an NUM local branch slogan; we might be able to come up with a variation.)

I would be cautious about using "Still We Rise", personally, as it references a poem which is really about racism, and there is a slight possibility that we could be seen as hijacking Black women's struggle, IYSWIM. Of course, not everybody would feel that way, but I think you need to be sensitive to that.

vesuvia · 12/03/2011 17:33

What a nice idea!

My favourite so far is claig's "Liberty, Equality, Maternity" slogan.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 12/03/2011 17:38

I don't really understand that one because maternity isn't really an ideal the way fraternity is in the original slogan so I'm not quite sure what it's trying to say - can anyone explain?

I think I prefer the more revolutionary ones because they're tougher and more surprising.

Mummy Power

As opposed to Girl Power, which was basically very young powerless women doing what powerful men told them to.

I like anything that addresses the assumption that being a mother stops you being intelligent, revolutionary, politically engaged, etc.

Raising the Revolution is good.

OK I know we're not all mothers, but given that motherhood is the Big Excuse the patriarchy currently gives for excluding us from the top table (women choose to opt out of earning their own living because they want to focus on their children blah blah) it's good to address it head on.

Like Claig's as well

I also like the Millwall of Mumsnet Grin and think we should hone our Millwall type chant in time for the next march

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 12/03/2011 18:52

and I know we're not all mothers, but given that the person who came up with 'Raising the revolution' is one of the childless MNer gang, I assume she doesn't feel too excluded by it.
anyway childless aunts have always helped raise kids, right?

Fair enough BOF.

I still like Raising the Revolution best - it doesn't refer to motherhood overtly, and could easily be applied to non-mothers, but I like the idea that we're raising revolutionaries IYSWIM Grin

And, yes, it takes a village to raise a child - not just people who are parents!

LadyBiscuit · 12/03/2011 18:59

I've voted now - for some reason it wouldn't let me last night Confused

I agree that Raising the Revolution is broad enough to encompass all of us - I for one would really hate to exclude childless women

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 12/03/2011 19:20

I suppose it's like raising an army or raising a mob, too.

OP posts:
BitOfFun · 12/03/2011 19:49

I like the idea of belonging to an ugly mob Grin

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 13/03/2011 09:56

I hadn't noticed Raising the Revolution when i suggested mine, but it's great.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 13/03/2011 10:30

Hello - I wasn't sure whether raising the revolution sounded too much as if we were deferring it to a later date, leaving it to the kids IYSWIM. but on the other hand the way I meant it was both in the sort of raising the roof/ raising an army/ fomenting revolt sense, and also the raising-children-to-be-revolutionaries sense.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 13/03/2011 10:48

And by the way I love how this thread has gone from 'er, we would quite like a slogan if it's not too much triuble' to Bathing in the Blood of the Patriarchy in less than 200 steps :o

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 13/03/2011 10:57

That's why it's lovely, Elephants - the 'raising' part does sound sort of calls-to-arms with a side helping of maternal power.

I am very tempted by Bathing in the Blood. That would be wrong, yes?

How about "band of mothers"

Like "band of brothers"

"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother"

I'm new to the feminism board sorry if I've missed the point completely Blush

FlamingoBingo · 13/03/2011 12:45

It's a fab one, dylthan. We do have some non-mothers on the topic, though. You def haven't missed the point! Smile

steamedtreaclesponge · 13/03/2011 13:36

I don't think Raising the Revolution sounds too much like we're putting it off by leaving it to the kids - I think at first sight it looks like we're raising an army/raising hell and then you get the kid reference. I do think it's clever.

We few, we happy few, we band of mothers....

Love it. Although as one of the 'village' I suppose it doesn't strictly apply to me...

Unrulysun · 13/03/2011 17:32

I have taken the survey. I was sorry not to see 'Dismantling the Patriarchy one prick at a time' there. :(

I thought it would give us some good ideas for the imagery on the banner?

We're going to need some campaign songs too sisters. If we vote for something Milwall related we can have 'Noone likes us, we don't care'.

FlamingoBingo · 13/03/2011 17:36

Well we definitely need to work Dittany's "patriarchy, you are being very unreasonable" into a chant somehow - it's not very rhythmic though.

Blush sorry Lenin!

Although don't blame you if you do take credit, Dittany - it was my favourite slogan. Pity non-MNers wouldn't get it!

LadyBiscuit · 13/03/2011 17:53

If we have a banner though we are still going to need placards etc. Patriarchy YABU is brilliant and it would make us laugh if no one else!

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 13/03/2011 18:12

I think 'Patriarchy YABVU' would go most nicely on the Mumsnet feminist mug.

UnrulySun - the banner is pretty much designed, the slogan was an afterthought but such a good one that it had to happen.
It is going to have Mumsnet Feminists and the MN logo appliqued on with one or two subtle changes, plus the slogan and the MN feminist topic web address.

Chant

We are Mumsnet
We are Mumsnet
We are Mumsnet
From the Web
No-one likes us
No-one likes us
We don't care
We don't care
We are Mumsnet
Super Mumsnet
We are Mumsnet
From the Web

That's a direct translation of the Millwall one.

I invite other verses... Grin

(We are feminists doesn't scan...)
