Men discriminated against from cradle to grave according to Dominic Raab MP

Writing in an article on Politics Home, Dominic Raab MP for Esher and Walton has written:

"It is almost taboo for a man to question the assertion that the rapidly dwindling pay gap is the result of discrimination, rather than genuine choice. The debate has been consumed by the prejudice it seeks to purge."

"While we have some of the toughest anti-discrimination laws in the world, we are blind to some of the most flagrant discrimination ? against men. From the cradle to the grave, men are getting a raw deal. Men work longer hours, die earlier, but retire later than women. "

Then there is the more subtle sexism. Men caused the banking crisis. Men earn more because they are more assertive in pay negotiations. One FT commentator recently complained that: ?High-flying women are programmed to go for high-flying men. Most men aren?t attracted to women who are more successful than they are.? Can you imagine the outrage if such trite generalisations were made about women, or other minorities? Feminists are now amongst the most obnoxious bigots."

"You can?t have it both ways. Either you believe in equality or you don?t. If you buy into the whole Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus theory of gender difference ? with all its pseudo science - you can?t then complain about inequalities of outcome that flow both ways from those essentially sexist distinctions."

What do you think MNetters?

Dolly101 perhaps you would like to list all the rights women have nowadays which men don't have, which are actually illegitimate?

HerBeX · 28/01/2011 09:47

Dolly do you know that your daughter has a 1 in 4 chance of being sexually assaulted or raped?

Whereas your son's chance of being falsely accused of rape is... ooh, so minsicule that it needs two decimal places before the 0.

So why are you more worried about him than her?

HerBeX · 28/01/2011 09:50

Oh and if your daughter does get raped, you knwo there's not a damned thing you or she can do about it don't you? You know she won't get justice, don't you? She is very very very unlikely to report it, because she probably won't realise it's rape first off and if she does, she will probably blame herself and if she doesn't blame herself, she will probably know that the rest of the world will blame her... and if in spite of all that, she still goes ahead and reports to the police, she has a 6% chance of getting a guilty verdict and a 94% chance of seeing her rapist go free.

And if her rapist goes free, she now runs the risk of being prosecuted for a false allegation of rape.

Are you happy that your daughter is being exposed to those odds?

Maybe Dolly has gone to the chicken keeping section to tell that all that chicken keeping is for losers.

Or perhaps she has gone to camping to tell them they are all putting their tents up wrong.

DOLLY101 · 28/01/2011 13:17

You call yourselves 'feminists' and then personally attack another woman. Yes I hate to say it but that Tory MP is right you certainly are a "bunch of obnoxious bigots".

Dolly surely you can understand why women (any women, not just feminist ones) would be upset at the idea that a parent would worry more about something wildly unlikely happening to their sons, than about something awful which is reasonably likely happening to their daughters? It seems to suggest that you care more for your sons than your daughters.

I just can't understand how a parent can hold that view, why don't you want to explain why you feel like that?

Turd would have been a good way of describing misogyny though.

Magic Ice/ice cream analogy works well if one imagines cheap and nasty chemically ice cream I find.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 28/01/2011 16:11

:o at BTP's analogy. I wish I could remember what everyone had said last night now Shock

SGM - apparently it's a rite of passage, being deleted.

Beachcomber yes, or told everyone in the TTC threads to stop being filthy shaggers.

HerBeX · 28/01/2011 16:38

I didn't attack you Dolly.

I asked you some questions about how happy you are about the statistical odds faced by your DD versus the statistical odds faced by your DS and you have failed to answer those questions.

Instead you accuse everyone of personally attacking you.

Why don't you engage with the debate instead of calling everyone who asks you to consider some statistical truths, bigots?

Sounds to me like you're the bigot actually. Have a nice day.

well he or she has no posting history so apparently joined purely for the purpose of being offensive on this thread.

and thinks that being named as a possible rapist is worse than actually being raped. Obviously I have no opinion as to Dolly's gender but in my experience most of the people who hold that view are men.

I wonder if the brother who was discriminated against in the family court was an identical twin.

shezzle · 29/01/2011 00:52

sigh... seems like somebody is throwing his toys out of his pram, Dominic should stop feeling sorry for himself and live in the real world and thank god he never has to give birth- I rest my case. Long Live Women woohoo (may have had an extra sip of wine this eve...)

lifeinlimbo · 29/01/2011 03:12

Ah he's a tory. That explains it, all tories are women-hating idiots. Need proof? - just look at the economy

ISNT · 29/01/2011 09:11

Grin @ shezzle's enthusiasm! I like it!

edam · 29/01/2011 11:22

Theresa May to Dominic Raab: "We should be trying to get away from gender warfare of equality and the politics of difference as you have said. But I might suggest to you that labelling feminists as obnoxious bigots is not the way forward to do that."

(I know someone linked to this exchange in the house of commons further down, but thought it was worth posting in full for anyone who didn't click the link. Well done TM!)

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 29/01/2011 11:31

Good idea edam.

I also liked the fact that she pointed this out about the parental leave plans (whatever you think of them), because it's probably not going to be a Tory heart-winner to allude to discrimination:

'"in future the employer will not know whether it's the male or the female who is in front of him for employment who will be taking time off to look after a baby".

"I think that's an important step in dealing with discrimination," the Conservative minister told MPs.'
