Jamie Oliver - 'pimp the flavour'

Katiekitty · 21/01/2011 17:46

He says this over and over...

example: 'add some garlic to pimp the flavour'

Is this now a fully-acceptable term to use? His cookery programme is on at 5.30

It all seems part how the sex industry is becoming more and more accepted and normal, cool even.

I like him.

LadyThompson · 26/01/2011 22:48

It's not funny, Dittany, it's both unfunny and unkind, and detracts from your argument.

There's something particularly ugly, I think, about jibes about people appearance. But he used the word 'pimp' (probably having no appreciation of the wider ramifications of this word) so he's fair game. Burn him! Burn him!

Oh okay then Grin But I still think it was a tad unfair.

the anti/non feminists are really scraping the bottom of the barrel on this thread with the "You're damaging the feminist cause by being rude about JO's tongue" line Grin

Beachcomber · 27/01/2011 08:22

I'm always taken aback by the impossibly high standards of conduct that feminists are held to (generally by others who do not adhere to those standards themselves).

I'm not saying that is the case here but I do think this is used in a sneaky way to manipulate discourse, whilst hypocritically riding a high horse on moral high-ground.

(I'm not referring to you LadyThompson - I'm thinking out loud about the issue in general.)

Beachcomber · 27/01/2011 08:24

Although I have to say, I have been put off feminism by dittany's comment about JO's tongue.

I will mention this incident every time anyone asks me why I'm not a feminist.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 27/01/2011 18:00

Latest issue of Mslexia carries the phrase '(my fans) love to pimp my books and are so enthusiastic'

From a FEMINIST magazine about WORDS as well. Tsk tsk.

vesuvia · 27/01/2011 20:24

TondelayoSchwarzkopf wrote - "From a FEMINIST magazine"

Is it a feminist magazine? I saw now mention of the word on their website. I think it is a magazine for women's writing of all kinds.

vesuvia · 27/01/2011 20:30

That should be "I saw no mention of the word on their website"

Well yunno dittany, it's not because I'm in a state of unawareness fickle or anything.

Don't worry about me - I'll console myself with kittens and gltter and looking damn hawt in a bikini. Equality and liberation are so last year.

Beachcomber · 27/01/2011 20:50

Um, that will be glitter of course.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 27/01/2011 21:26

I would say it was a feminist magazine - I've read it for nigh on ten years now. If they don't mention the f-word much on site their principles are pretty much aligned

I was being facetious anyway. Smile

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 27/01/2011 21:27

And the clue is in the 'MS' Grin

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 27/01/2011 21:47

but was the writer quoted a feminist writer?
she might have been, you know, Katie Price or someone.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 27/01/2011 21:53

She was actually. How did you guess?

No sorry. It was Jools Oliver

Whoops!

Beachcomber · 27/01/2011 21:58

I'm finding it hard to believe that an aware feminist would use the word 'pimp', lightly.

Am willing to be proven wrong if a link is provided however.

sakura · 28/01/2011 01:18

A woman identifying as a feminist may have said pimp, but the feminists on here think it's wrong. when will these anti/non feminists stop trying to impose a party line on us, sheesh

TeiTetua · 29/01/2011 20:34

But wait, there's more. On Jamie Oliver's own website, he's now featuring "proper blokes' sausage fusilli". The text starts, "This is a real blokey, gutsy yet simple pasta dish – but saying that, girls tend to like it as well!"

Who knows, maybe it's edible.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 29/01/2011 20:40

I can't possibly comment until I have cooked it and eaten an enormous portion, all to myself.

Unrulysun · 01/02/2011 11:59

I found a worksheet called 'Pimp your work' in exercise books in the school I work in and wrote to the head of that department asking her to cease and desist :)

she wrote back explaining that there is a show called Pimp Your Ride, the kids like it blah blah relevant blah blah interesting etc etc... (ffs I'm only 37 - I might be aware of the existence of Music Television) so in that case she wondered if I'd change my decision...

In a school. An actual school with actual children in it. Hell in a motherfucking handcart.

Unrulysun · 01/02/2011 12:01

Disclaimer - the use of 'motherfucking' is for illustrative purposes only and in no way constitues an acceptance of the practice of motherfucking on the part of the poster.
