Jamie Oliver - 'pimp the flavour'

Katiekitty · 21/01/2011 17:46

He says this over and over...

example: 'add some garlic to pimp the flavour'

Is this now a fully-acceptable term to use? His cookery programme is on at 5.30

It all seems part how the sex industry is becoming more and more accepted and normal, cool even.

'pimp' has changed but it has not changed so far as to leave the associations behind. The reason why it sounds edgy is precisely because of the association with the sex trade and semi-jokey idea that pimps are cool. If people using or hearing the word didn't actually know what 'pimp' meant I would be convinced it had changed so much it was unproblematic, but people do know what pimp means and that's precisely why they use it.

rinabean · 22/01/2011 21:02

It's not so much like nigger as like "gyp". Plenty of people use that term who don't realise they are slurring gypsies at the same time. But that's where the word comes from so there's no excuse.

I guess retard would be another similar issue. Lots of people protest that they don't mean it like that but we don't let them off.

But I suppose it's because gypsies and those with special needs are still people, unlike prostitutes Angry

southeastastra · 22/01/2011 21:04

i've heard radio interviews where jamie oliver has used the word spaz - he or jools are obviously not mumsnetters

Katiekitty · 22/01/2011 21:05

Oh, did I miss the memo - when did it change then?

What does 'pimp' mean these days

And those posters who use/accept the word - do you know where it came from?

Would you use the term 'tart' 'bint' 'bird' for a woman then? It's heard all over, so do you accept that?

Or, what about 'paki shop' for a shop run by a Pakistani? Loads of people say it, is that ok?

And, this is the one I want you to really answer - which word do you use when refering to a prostitute?: 'Prostitute', 'CallGirl', 'Hooker', 'Whore' ? Which one? Any or none of these? Seeing as you are comfortable with the use of the word 'pimp'

I am genuinely curious to how you see the other side of prostitution, mainly the women and how you use/accept THIS word in your day-to-day conversation too

who on earth are you hectoring KK.demanding specific answers making assumptions

pointydug · 22/01/2011 21:11

Language is always changing, there is never a memo.

I don't think anyone has stated that they use or accept the word.

But that sort of sarcastic rant isn;t going to influence people.

Katiekitty · 22/01/2011 21:13

I'm asking those who say that the meaning of 'pimp' has changed.

I'm not aware of this, I'm asking them what they think of he other side of the of the pimp coin: the prostitutes.

If you see this as hectoring, then that's up to you.

I'm asking a question to those who accept the word 'pimp' as ok

OP posts:
Tortington · 22/01/2011 21:14

jamie is a tool

however are we not reclaiming language that should be mainstreamed and was in the past?

Katiekitty · 22/01/2011 21:16

pointy all I am asking is what term people who accept 'pimp' in chit chat and cookery, use for a prostitute in conversation too

I don't think I'm being sarcasic

better than being navelgazing socialscientastic

Coleysworth · 23/01/2011 00:33

I suppose I can understand why people find him irritating, but he's done some really worthwhile things (fifteen, school dinners etc) for which he deserves credit, I reckon. And his recipes are excellent :)

claig · 23/01/2011 00:44

I don't like him. I find him false, a 'mockney'. Apparently, he is not going down too well in America. He hasn't got Blair behind him over there.

I've come across the word pimp a lot in the world of fan fiction. Used in the context of pimping their story on Twitter/forum/blog etc

  • giving pimp the meaning of to share or promote, to spread the word.
So not used in an ostentatious way, but probably more true to the original meaning of angling for business.

BTW JO is a tool.

scottishmummy · 23/01/2011 00:53

aye jools is a red faced gurn

Is it really necessary to be so insulting about the way someone looks? What a horrible way to behave Sad
