Jamie Oliver - 'pimp the flavour'

Katiekitty · 21/01/2011 17:46

He says this over and over...

example: 'add some garlic to pimp the flavour'

Is this now a fully-acceptable term to use? His cookery programme is on at 5.30

It all seems part how the sex industry is becoming more and more accepted and normal, cool even.

Titsalina - I don't think anyone is saying that JO is trying to offend, or that he is a nasty or sexist person.

But the point is, whether you like it or not, language makes a huge impact on the general beliefs and attitude of a society. If people don't get uppity about words being used inappropriately, then they become normal, which then goes onto make the behaviour and beliefs that go with the words normal too.

Take the word 'rape'. It is and should be a shocking and horrifying word, but people are starting to use it wrt to 'the rape of a landscape' for example. IMO, it's just wrong. It shouldn't be 'normalised' as a word, because it then makes the act of rape less shocking and horrific.

By taking the word 'pimp' and using it in normal language, you are taking away from the horrific meaning it actually has.

Katiekitty · 22/01/2011 19:41

good analagy Flamingobingo I see people saying they've had their Facebook 'raped' i.e. someone has gone on it and written something awkaward.

Makes it a bit of a laugh
Makes it a jape
Makes it seem an inevitable occurance

'Pimp'? same thing going on here, you can 'pimp' in your own kitchen and lord it about

Come on Jamie, surely you have the vocabulary to describe your cooking other than this?

OP posts:
scottishmummy · 22/01/2011 19:50

think you are overthinking this.socialsciencetastic navel gazing

Katiekitty · 22/01/2011 19:54

Why do you think that scottishmummy?

Do you use these terms?
Are they acceptable to you?

Pimp this, pimp that?

Not acceptable to me, but I know I'm not to everyone's taste. I get called a prude often. I don't care!

OP posts:
scottishmummy · 22/01/2011 19:56

i dont find it sinister, and taking it out of the humorous urban colloquial context is seeking offence where i dont see any

Katiekitty · 22/01/2011 19:59

Fair enough scottishmummy but what I find distastful in Jamie's cooking is the colloquial use of a term normally applied to prostitution and exploitation of women.

Used in a cookery programme on at teatime, made by a man famed for his schooldinners, so watched by millions, of all ages.

kids hear worse at after school then Jamie quips

MissTFied · 22/01/2011 20:01

The man talks a lot of shite generally (herbage?).

Katiekitty · 22/01/2011 20:04

Like what Scottishmummy?

Give me an example...

OP posts:
ThePosieParker · 22/01/2011 20:04

Someone said on twitter that DC was raping the NHS...

CountBapula · 22/01/2011 20:05

katiekitty I agree, I find the term 'Facebook rape' (or 'frape') very distasteful indeed.

ThePosieParker · 22/01/2011 20:05

Oh and whilst in a fast food est. (all dcs and me ill, dh away....justification surely???) I heard a girl tell her bf that giving him her cash card made her feel like she'd been raped.

lifeinlimbo · 22/01/2011 20:23

It makes me want to vom when someone uses the word 'pimp' as something positive.

Somebody please inform JO of the conotations post haste.

FlamingoBingo · 22/01/2011 20:25

Well, personally, I am (and I think this has been said a few times) categorically not offended by JO saying 'pimp' on his programmes.

I am concerned that such language is being normalised, however innocently, by its usage on programmes like this. I would imagine (hope?) that JO would be upset if he realised what he was actually saying. I think he's naive. Maybe he needs emailing to gently point out the emytology of the word?

FlamingoBingo · 22/01/2011 20:25

x-post lifeinlimbo

southeastastra · 22/01/2011 20:27

pimp my ride is a good show though Wink

jamie oliver comes out with some corkers, he always talks shite

scottishmummy · 22/01/2011 20:28

like jamie find him v affable and easy to watch

FlamingoBingo · 22/01/2011 20:33

Just 'liked' his FB page and put this on his wall:

"Hi Jamie. Please could I ask you to stop using the word 'pimp' on your shows? I'm sure you're unaware, and will be horrified to learn of, its etymology. It basically means enhancing something to show off how much more money you have than everyone else in your neighbourhood because you sell the services of prostitute...s. Please, please stop normalising it by using it so casually? Thank you!"

pointydug · 22/01/2011 20:39

saying herbage isn't talking shite.

He has always used current slang words. He drove people crazy in teh bean with pukka. There is a current, humorous (to some) type of talk where you add -age on to the end of lots of words, hence herbage. Lots of people use the term pimp meaning to fancufy these days.

It is an acceptable term to use these days. Doesn't mean that is should be but it is.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 22/01/2011 20:43

I think Jamie is very creative in the language he uses to talk about food. I love the way he's always using the wrong word (like 'wazz'... DH was, like 'Did he really just say 'wazz'?), it all adds to the vibe....
But not 'pimp'. No Jamie, no.

FlamingoBingo · 22/01/2011 20:45

Nigger used to be acceptable too. When enough people made enough fuss about it, it became, as it should be, unacceptable.

nigger has always had one very clear meaning, no?

The current meaning of pimp has changed.

pointydug · 22/01/2011 20:54

stewie, I can see you;re just going to float in every so often and call him a twat Grin

scottishmummy · 22/01/2011 20:55

language is fluid and adaptable.colloqualism and different nuances result in different meanings
