Jamie Oliver - 'pimp the flavour'

Katiekitty · 21/01/2011 17:46

He says this over and over...

example: 'add some garlic to pimp the flavour'

Is this now a fully-acceptable term to use? His cookery programme is on at 5.30

It all seems part how the sex industry is becoming more and more accepted and normal, cool even.

Don't think it's helpful to comment on either of their looks. Please desist.

ISNT · 23/01/2011 11:50

For me this is about how a word which means selling women for sex has become so mainstream that a popular TV chef can use it to describe flavour and no-one bats an eyelid.

Like that facebook rape thing.

It's just unpleasant and trivialises something which is actually rather serious.

pointydug · 23/01/2011 13:21

I understand the issue. JO is by no means the first to use this phrase, it has been around a while.

Top Gear have used it. The BBC has a Pimp My Blog course on the web. In fact, I am fairly sure that a few years ago there was a mn thread about Pimp my jaffa cake. I remember it because some of those jaffa cakes were incredible.

pointydug · 23/01/2011 13:23

'proprty porn'. That comes up a lot.

Katiekitty · 23/01/2011 13:30

Good point, Pointy (!)

And we get prostitutes appearing on X Factor

Playboy bunny logos on stuff for girls

TV ads for Secret Diary of a Call girl saying 'You know you want to...' as its strapline

All part of the normalisation of the sex industry, run by men, keeping women in their place as always being available and there to please

I really want to do something about it

Harpy so do you reckon he could get away with the word 'ho' then?

He could 'pimp' some potato rosti to make it a proper tasty 'ho' of a spud dish?

What say you?

Hulababy · 24/01/2011 18:21

Only on MN.

Thread in feminism ended up with people insulting other women because of the way they look!

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 24/01/2011 18:29

Well said Hulababy.

Pimp = unacceptable.
Fat tongued-tosser / red faced gurn = fine

Hmm

Small applause for Flamingo for putting money where mouth is and raising the issue direct with JO.

Katiekitty · 24/01/2011 18:54

oh yes, meant to ask Flamingo

Have you had any reply to your good FB post?

It's a sign of the mainstreaming of porn, and other vile sexual activities, that this word can cross over into normal speech and most people accept it without question. It's bad enough when horrible things show up everywhere, but it's worse when everyone forgets that they were ever horrible to begin with.

Like with shaving of pubic hair being considered not just normal, but making people feel "fresh and clean" and never a bit like a porn star. (Topic from a few weeks ago, do not revive it here. Just pointing out a similarity.)

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 24/01/2011 19:02

Hang on a minute though Hulababy. The person who was nasty about a woman's appearance was ScottishMummy who firstly AFAIK does not identify as a feminist (she has refused to answer the question in the past) and secondly based on her posts here thinks that using the word pimp is fine.

so I hope you were not implying it's feminists slagging women off for how they look because that is not what has happened here.

FlamingoBingo · 24/01/2011 19:06

One response from someone suggesting I'm silly for being irritated by it (from a man); and a message of agreement with me (from a woman).

nothing from JO

I stumbled across a "bookshelf porn" blog the other day. I love bookshelves but refused to subscribe to it because of its title.

Which is interesting in and of itself.

A word used to describe a woman in prostitution is perceived as derogatory.

A word used to describe a man who exploits a woman in prostitution is just fine, has entered the language and is perceived as cool.

Typical patriarchal society double standards.

I think people bandy the words 'ho' 'bitch' 'slut' 'slag' 'skank' 'whore' etc. around far too easily. Just never in a complimentary or positive fashion as we are seeing with JO and 'pimp'.

I somehow can't imagine a TV chef describing cooking using any of those terms.

"Yeah, just look at those lovely creamy potatoes, aren't they slutty?"

"Right let's get this roast out of the oven, oh what a ho of a dish this is going to be."

Don't get me wrong - I have no wish for these unpleasant words to become hip and cool cookery terms. I just wish the same could be said for 'pimp' and 'porn'.

NiceShoes · 25/01/2011 20:23

Dittany slagged off Jamie as "a fat tongued tosser".So,Is it OK to comment upon man's appearance? But questionable when his wife gets a comment?Hardly equal to be offended by comment about Jools Oliver, but not so about her DH.

Have you not heard of Nigella? Grin

FlamingoBingo · 25/01/2011 21:33

Who was offended by a comment about Jools and not by one about Jamie, NiceShoes? All I've seen is concern that any comments are made about any physical appearance

When you resort to cheap gibes, I am afraid you lose the moral highground.
