Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I am so shocked about that thread stating most women have no pubic hair

I don't know quite why it has disturbed me so much. Like most women I have plucked/shaved and groomed for many years of my life. However the thought of putting myself through that really upsets me for some reason. Not that I plan to. It is just that I have never, ever considered that pubic hair is undesirable. I can't help but relate it to women in porn with little or no pubic hair and it makes me sad to think girls and young women (I have a daughter) will no doubt feel insecure about their vagina and how it looks in this way.

I am by no means a good feminist. As I mentioned I do shave my legs and I wear make up. I have read Beauty and Misogyny by Sheila Jeffreys and I question why I even do this. However it makes me almost weep to think of my daughter being influenced in such a way.

I was just really upset by that thread and I m not sure why

Whats the difference between 'fresh' and 'not dirty or smelly' though?

amberleaf · 06/01/2011 19:10

wukter when you go to the toilet and use tissue to wipe [assuming you dont have one of those toilet shower thingys] do you think all the piss comes off your pubic hair with said dry tissue?

if theres no hair there theres no drying festering piss to start to smell.

I consider that fresher.

amberleaf · 06/01/2011 19:14

thenightsky I too am a bit 'mis shapen' its not a problem lots of women are, its normal i can imagine your shock though if you've never seen it all that close

wukter · 06/01/2011 19:15

So it is the same as 'not dirty or smelly' then.
I just might get one of those toilet shower things...

Poppet45 · 06/01/2011 19:19

Yup that thread makes me feel like weeping too. Am so bloody glad I have a son and not a girl. I suppose it's a tragedy of the commons, I can't understand it but don't begrudge indivduals if they want to wax, but the fact that so many now do so means the pressure on all young women to be bare down there must be horrendous. What an awful thought that it'll soon become as unacceptable to have pubic hair as to go out with hairy legs and underarms. Even those closest to us can't view a woman in her natural state. So sad, like a vanity arms race with the most vacuous and self obsessed pushing the agenda for all the rest.

amberleaf · 06/01/2011 19:23

maybe it is, i have never seen it in a negative light like that! i prefer to say fresh!

I would love one of those shower things, not a fan of bidets though

JaneS · 06/01/2011 19:23

Eh?

amber, how do you get pee in your pubic hair anyway? I just pat dry the place where the pee comes out before it gets to the hair. Confused

Come to think, if you do get pee everywhere, why would you just pat it dry whether it's hairy or not?

amberleaf if you really think the pubic hair of people who wash regularly is nonetheless going to smell of festering piss, at what age would you advise young women to start removing it?

On that basis, as soon as it starts to appear, I guess? I mean if it's that bad then it's the only sensible option?

If you don't think that girls should get rid as soon as it comes in, how do you square that with the festering piss idea?

Blackduck · 06/01/2011 19:35

TNS I am in awe!! I have never shaved and have no desire to (I do knees to ankles in the summer and thats it....), hair is part of being a grown up.....(but I do have a male friend who shaves everything off!!)

GettinTrimmer · 06/01/2011 19:48

I felt disturbed and my teeth were on edge at the thought of removing my pubic hair dd is 5 and she will grow up thinking this is normal I suppose, as everyone else does it, I completely understand where you're coming from roseability.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 06/01/2011 20:01

Poppet45, how would you feel if your son depilated? Many men do these days; the back, sac and crack job.

[ouch]

roseability · 06/01/2011 20:17

So you have

highlighted, straightened and groomed your hair

Applied make up and removed any facial hair

Cut, filed and polished your finger nails

Removed rest of unwanted body hair including your pubes

Cut, filed and polished yor toe nails

Cleaned, scrubbed, exfoliated and moisterised

squeezed into a dress and tights with high heel shoes

well done you have achieved the standard required of you

Now imagine you could step out the door as you are. Unwaxed, un made up and in comfortable clothes. But you are really loved, admired and sought after because women have never had to do these things. Because we are valued as human beings and not the 'other' sex.

Why is festering piss a problem anyway? I thought urine was pretty harmless stuff, useful for curing jellyfish stings and even drunk by some mad people. It certainly isn't smelly enough to justify hair removal if you wash yourself properly everyday. Crazy argument.

Poppet45 · 06/01/2011 20:27

I think I'd find it just as odd and pointless as if a woman did it. And so very shallow and vain. He'll have his work cut out if he's as hairy as his dad. A hairy man is probably a must have is you're as lazy as me when it comes to depillation. Oh yes and a short sighted one.

mathanxiety · 06/01/2011 20:45

I don't buy the bacteria/ hairs /'fresh' thing. Unless someone is going to tell me they apply antiperspirant down there too.

There are apocrine glands in the groin that produce pheromones, as well as the eccrine/merocrine (sweat) glands down there, and elsewhere in your skin. Your groin is supposed to smell and it will smell even if you shave off all your pubic hair. It will smell of sweat and it will also have your own personal pheromonal fingerprint odour which plays a vital role in the biological process of sexual attraction.

It is microorganisms that live on all moist skin (sweaty areas or areas not aerated like feet that are in wellies for instance) feeding on sebum that cause odour anyway, not whatever bacteria may reside on pubic hair. Sweat/smell/pheromone article here.

i agree Prolesworth. I have 2 teenage daughters and i hope they haven't succumbed to this. I know they are always shaving and eplilating but hopefully just legs and armpits etc.

I would find it a bit weird not having any public hair as it is like being a child. also it does itch if it is shaved off.

Secretwishescometrue · 06/01/2011 21:22

I was shocked and saddened reading that other thread too. I really didn't know it was considered the norm ESPECIALLY among teenagers :( and the thing is unless some lady GaGa or sumit goes about sayin they think its nuts then it will only continue to spread as the norm and as someone said earlier kids will do it to "fit in" really sad to think young women will feel they have to do this to themselves. I'm all for choice hell if ya wana be bare be bare but not everyone has to be or they are considered unsexy or "unfresh" Hmm unhygienic or dirty!

NarcolepsyQueen · 06/01/2011 21:24

But it IS fresher down there without hair! I use toilet paper followed by a wet wipe when I go to the toilet. It feels cleaner and fresher. Nothing to do with porn, or negative body image etc. I shave my armpits as it feels fresher without hair, and i whip off my lady garden as that feels fresher too.

I didn't notice any difference personally when I tried it.

I also found the regrowth quite annoying and uncomfortable. I don't have the time or the inclination to bother with this latest trend.

MissQue · 06/01/2011 21:44

I don't feel fresher with a fully shaven haven, it just feels odd, and when I get stubbly I end up with bits of loo roll velcro-ing themselves to my bits (where's the sick smiley?)

GMajor7 · 06/01/2011 21:45

LMAO at 'festering piss'. It's only urine FGS and is sterile upon leaving your bladder.

This whole 'fresher' concept is psychosomatic IMO.
