Elephants had this idea!!

So I'll start

"we're not a homogeneous mass..."
"I don't like to be too narrow..."

"Women can be just as sexist as men"
I have an answer to this, not sure how effective it is but I've found it to be better than saying nothing ; Sexism is the combination of prejudice and institutional and social power. Women don't have institutional and social power so can never truly be sexist.
I know it's not catchy, but it's true.

plupervert · 23/11/2010 22:04

Thanks!

As you say, it's not catchy, but sometimes breaking the rhythm of "catchy" phrases with a longer response can interrupt a dynamic.

sixpercenttruejedi · 23/11/2010 22:19

Going abit off topic but thats why the word misogyny exists and why the word misandry had to be invented quite recently. can't summarise adequately but this says it all, especailly the column down the left hand side.

plupervert · 23/11/2010 22:32

My OED has "misandry" as early 2o0th century, whereas "misogyny" is Mid-17thC, and "misogamy" (hatred of marriage") also M17C!

Grin
sixpercenttruejedi · 23/11/2010 22:35

I HATE the word misandry! my hatred of misogyny and my hatred of bad english come together to create the perfect storm!

"I don't disagree with your aims but I disagree with your means."

Posted by concern trolls Concern trolls

Ooh ooh

"Give us some statistics then to prove it" and...when you do...:

"Your statistics are biased/rubbish/don't prove anything"

JessinAvalon · 23/11/2010 22:40

"I'm not a feminist but...." [reels off list of feminist ideals]

"I wouldn't call myself a feminist...."

StaceySolomonismyHeroine · 23/11/2010 22:42

What possible "means" can the concern trolls be objecting to?

I mnean, it's not as if feminists are sending suicide bombers out to acheive their aims is it?

JessinAvalon · 23/11/2010 22:43

Have we had "jealous" yet?

Fat? Green eyed monster? Rabid crone? Hag? Nag?

Just a small selection of things that I've been called in the press over the Hooters thing by people who have never seen or spoken to me!

JessinAvalon · 23/11/2010 22:45

Re: Stacey - there was a troll on the Hooters thread who said this repeatedly.

Apparently e-mailing councillors, starting a petition, objecting to the licence application, issuing statements to the local press, lobbying the police who could appeal the licence decision and lobbying Marks and Spencer (the leaseholders) wasn't the right way to go about it.

He didn't ever say what the right way was, mind you!

JessinAvalon · 23/11/2010 22:57

Tonight I was just called "The Feminist" in the context of "I warned you about The Feminist, mate" from a guy on Facebook to another guy*, when I commented on their forthcoming visit to Hooters in Cardiff.

*Said guy had asked if I wanted to go out sometime and offered to take me along to Hooters because - you never know! - I might enjoy it!

I thought not!

StaceySolomonismyHeroine · 23/11/2010 22:58

Ah yes I remember him.

It's like Daftpunk on that Reclaim the Night thread. "Don't go! You're all wasting your time! It's just a stupid waste of time, stop it!"

Why so passionate about other people's activity? No-one's demanding that YOU write to your counsellor or go marching. Why spend time telling other people they're wasting their time by doing so?

JessinAvalon · 23/11/2010 23:01

Yes, I find that position very ironic. What you're all doing is pointless/waste of time/pathetic/won't achieve anything/won't help your cause.

The irony of someone spending their time telling others that they are getting wound up about a pointless subject. If it was that pointless, they wouldn't feel the need to comment on it or belittle it, surely!

StaceySolomonismyHeroine · 23/11/2010 23:02

Yes and seeing as how she's implacably opposed to our cause, surely the logical thing would be to shut up and let us go and ruin it without warning us that that's what we're doing? Grin

plupervert · 23/11/2010 23:10

Sorry, am not ignoring any further discussion, but have got to go to bed.

TheFeministParent and Elephants, thank you for starting a good discussion.

Catitainahatita · 24/11/2010 04:40

Ok I'm a serial Feminist board lurker. I have always considered myself to be a feminist and have even read stuff and done courses. However, I have to say I have learnt more on these boards. Thank you all.

Now, after the eulogy. And in the interests of giving good answers to stupid arguments.

Today's story in my Mexican newspaper: "One in four men think that women are raped because of what they wear or how they behave".

My comment:
Because obviously if we all went around in burquas all day without saying a word there would be no more rapes.

Or:
Because rape is so clearly a new phenomenon. No women were raped back in the days that all wore long floor length frocks and wimples then?

Catitainahatita · 24/11/2010 04:41

"in the days when all women"

Sorry.

Sakura · 24/11/2010 06:56

"Feminists are nothing but witch-hunters" [an interesting one that comes up a lot on here]

mathanxiety · 24/11/2010 07:05

'bitter'
'you clearly had a tragic experience..'
'you're projecting, Mathanxiety'

" you've got nothing to complain about, women live longer "

Well, we do if we're not murdered by our spouse first; or not dead from anorexia or from complications under the cosmetic surgeon's knife (in places like the U.S, where they're not bothering to record the death toll, coz it ain't that important) , or childbirth; or not aborted because we're female...etc etc

"men don't get to choose ; we just have to work"

feminism is not about choice, as in women have the choice whether or not to become members of a subordinate class; they don't and feminism is about liberation

Yes, I agree Lenin, that's a good idea. It doesn't work, does it.

wukter · 24/11/2010 07:21

You want all women to stop shaving their legs.

No, in an equal fair and just society both men and women would just shave one leg each.

You plank.

Beachcomber · 24/11/2010 07:56

"Feminists are smug and patronise other by women by insisting they are oppressed when they clearly aren't. Feminists think anyone who doesn't agree with them is stupid."

(Often the people who say this sort of thing think pole dancing is empowering.)
