I have a gem: I'm sorting out the home insurance renewal but since the last policy I have taken redundancy and I'm going back to do a postgraduate course. Which I told them.

They now have my occupation listed as "housewife" which is pretty yuk, but under employer's business it say "domestic service".

Presumably my husband is my employer and I spend my time in servitude to him? Hmm

Any one more?

Really, HRHReality? I find it odd. You mean because it's traditional it would have seemed very pointed not to change?

*Elephants@ Grin Classic!!

Loving these!

I didn't take my husband's name on marriage. He had a first wife who did and I didn't want to be forever the second Mrs .

However, I am a PhD so when we're out together invariably he is the one who gets addressed as Dr ! Bah!!

He's pretty good at putting them right tho. Wink

I have been to garages and asked if my husband has agreed the purchase of a car Shock

I have been asked if my husband should perhaps test drive the car I was attempting to purchase Shock

I have been asked at a job interview when I was likely to have children Confused

Ah you lot have inspired me.

At work in office open to the general public.

A couple come in and I deal with their enquiry. They thank me, tell me what a wonderful job I've done and that maybe one day, beause I am so capable and good at my job I might be in that office

To which I reply "Oh yes I'll be in there later to do his appraisal. I'm his boss".

They looked at me like Shock and didn't know what to say Grin

Elephants and Marchpane, I did actually lol at your posts Grin

I only passed my driving test this year, and DP loves it when I drive him around. I think he thinks it's payback Grin

StealthPolarBear · 03/09/2010 15:26

lol March
I was once asked about "the girls" I managed by my Grandad - I managed an all male team at the time!

This is not as funny as some of them, but I was recently declined a home improvement loan because I was on mat leave. I explained that I was on 6 mths full pay and would be returning 3 months thereafter to the same job (which was well-paid enough to service the small loan several times over).

Nationwide kindly explained to me that I couldn't be trusted not to change my mind about returning to work, and suggested my husband make the application instead.

I took my business elsewhere.

Marchpane · 03/09/2010 15:33

Making an investment to pay off our interest only mortgage the paperwork finally comes back with purpose of investment as...

"Saving to start a family".

This came as something of a shock to DH as I'd done the interview and sorted it all out and he was just flicking through to see how much he had to cough up each month.

It was even more of a shock when I got pregnant by accident about 3 months later... Grin

Not quite the same as everyone else's, but years ago I joined the AA. Out of the goodness of my heart I added DP name to the cover. A short while later it was sold and all members were given a cheque for about £100. The cheque was sent to me, but made payable to DP. When I queried this, they said that the money was automatically sent to the male on the cover and it couldn't be changed. It still smarts.

minipie · 03/09/2010 15:49

I often find that (male) colleagues at work will apologise to me - and only to me - if they swear or tell a rude story.

"I'd tell you this funny story, but there are ladies present"

"blah blah blah ... Apologies minipie for my terrible language!"

etc

my language is considerably worse than that of many men I know

JumpJockey · 03/09/2010 15:59

Not so bad as a lot of these, but still rankles several years later. Took my then boyfriend out to dinner, I ordered the wine, they gave it to him to taste... I asked for the bill, they gave it to him. I put my credit card on the little plate in view of the waiter, they took it away and brought the slip back and gave it to him to sign. Hmm No tip for you then Mr Waiter!

Female colleague, we were talking about tax for some reason and the conversation went like this:

Me: I don't know why they are increasing income tax for middle income and low income households but not higher incomes
Her: I'm so glad I don't have to worry about this because Daddy will sort my money out until I get married then my husband will sort out the money afterwards.

I was Shock because she was about 26 and I knew she didn't live at home anymore

Poshpaws · 03/09/2010 16:07

I have had women in the school playground express genuine surprise when they found out that I had spent my afternoon mowing the lawn. Apparently, it is 'men's work'. So is taking out the bins Hmm.

Jumpjockey, I hate that in restaurants they give the wine to the man to taste. Bloody cheek.

And I remember years ago, when I was talking to my oldest friend's dad and he asked me what I was doing. Told him I was working and studying. Then he asked how old I was I I was in my early 20s at the time) and he expressed shock that, given my age, I was not yet 'married with kids' Angry

elportodelgato · 03/09/2010 16:08

I used to work with a rather naive female colleague, her daddy was very rich and her family were from Lebanon (IIRC) - not really sure why she was working TBH as she obviously didn't need the money. Anyway we once had a long discussion where she explained to me that the situation of women in Afghanistan was really 'quite good' because the burkha offered them a kind of modesty and privacy from the male gaze that was sadly lacking in the UK Hmm Bless, she was only about 23.

hocuspontas · 03/09/2010 16:10

At dd2's mixed comprehensive the uniform for boys is black trousers and white shirt (minimum cost £8 from Asda) and the uniform for girls is school kilt and fitted blouse with house logo (minimum cost £30 from sole school stockist).

BitOfFun · 03/09/2010 16:16

MrsReality- you were both going to double-barrel though, weren't you? Until your trusty bridesmaid pointed out that then your initials would be rather unfortunate...

pagwatch · 03/09/2010 16:19

JumpJockey & Poshpaws.
I wonder that you still get that?
Mostly when we are out we get asked who wishes to taste the wine.
And when I used to take clients to lunch back in the 1980s I never had that experience - of my clients being offered the bill to sign.
How odd.

Bumperlicious · 03/09/2010 16:19

Despite having penalty points for speeding on his licence my car insurance goes down when DH is added as a named driver Hmm, I think that might because he is old though Grin

Poshpaws · 03/09/2010 16:21

Pag, it seems to be the old fashioned restaurants that I have been to that do this. DH is very good though. When they offer the glass to him, he tells them to pass it to me Grin.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 03/09/2010 16:24

I have phones up Garages about work being done on our Car to be told that the cost would be £200 + VAT, DP rang the same garage and spoke to the same guy about the same job a few hrs later and it was £150 VAT!

My neighbour is the most sexist pig of a man i have ever met, he often tells me i must be getting back indoors as DP will be home and expecting his dinner!
He has been shocked to see me mowing the lawn and when he heard me drilling indoors he asked me if i thought i was appropriate and maybe dp should be doing the diy... Hmm
