Tentative!

Um, the way I see it is that a lot of porn (I have heard) is appallingly violent and degrading for women. This stuff, ideally wouldn't exist and should be banned (how, I don't know, but ideally).

However, the porn that I have seen or enjoyed is not. I wouldn't enjoy porn that is degrading.

So, why is all porn bad? (in some people's opinions?) If it isn't degrading and is equal in its approach, for the entertainment of others, then I don't see any harm.

Is the argument that you don't get the 'good' porn without the bad?

Don't flame me please, I really want this to be a considered conversation.

I hate porn

I don't know who benefits - even the arguable very few at the top who control the industry - they probably ironically also have a vacuous and unemotional existence themselves riddled somewhere with guilt at what they do and so don't win in many ways.

The women involved, I quite agree with Dittany, are routinely coerced into degrading and painful acts in order to survive.

The men who watch it have their minds polluted, and their hormones manipulated, so they see women as objects for their lust only (i.e. no emphasis on bonds that are so important to all humans) and often end up with problematic habits which infiltrate on parts of their lives and hence effect the women (and children) in their lives negatively - social isolation, depression, career loss, decreased productivity, financial consequences, relationship issues (time spent viewing it, viewing in problematic situations such as work) etc etc

I just hate every single part of it. I can't see who gets anything out of it. I don't think even the money argument for those at the top ultimately explains it fully.

claig · 05/09/2010 21:45

dittany, there are men like that, but I am not sure all porn barons are like that. Some make sure that their daughters take over the business.

Haven't read the thread, only the first few posts. I was interested in porn from a sexual perspective but against it from a exploitation perspective. I spoke to a male friend about this, he also held this view. He told me that he only watches amateur porn for this reason...just couples having a laugh. In this way you don't have to worry about exploitation.

porn is sometimes used as a weapon of war. It is broadcast into the homes of the enemy. It takes over their normal viewing. This gives an insight into one of its real goals. It is used to insult and taunt the enemy, to break their moral fibre, to destroy the bonds of decency that hold their society together and to demoralise the population.

What, really? A weapon of war Shock

claig · 05/09/2010 21:57

"Claig, I don't even know why you are arguing it."

I don't think it is as black and white as saying that they want to destroy women. I have seen a documentary about the porn director Ben Dover. I don't think he wants to destroy women. I think that they have other motives, which are worth trying to understand.

AandO · 05/09/2010 21:58

His name is Ben Dover Grin!

Sorry Blush

LadyBlaBlah · 05/09/2010 21:59

Can I just pick Carmen up on her comparison of Porn barons to "sales managers". Please. Shock

LadyBlaBlah · 05/09/2010 22:02

And yes, 'they' destroy much more than women, arguably even themselves

there have been news reports that the Israelis have in the past jammed Palestinian TV stations and broadcast hard-core porn. But they are not the only ones. I can't remember if it was also done against the Serbs.

The crazy thing is that most porn doesn't even attempt to hide the woman hating element - quite the contrary in fact.

I just looked at Ben Dover's homepage and at the top there is an advert for 'teens' being 'violated' for example.

The blurb for most porn is blatantly misogynistic - all the better to entice consumers to watch it.

The porn makers make no attempt to hide the fact that porn is filmed degradation and abuse.

Weirdly there still seem to be lots of people who will jump to defend porn in ways that the porn makers themselves don't even bother with.

Beachcomber · 05/09/2010 22:45

Claig that is disgusting.

Ok - another reason to hate porn it is a fucking weapon of war.

claig · 05/09/2010 22:56

In the same way, I think that extreme porn, extreme violence, extreme horror, extremely disturbing images etc. are a war against the population, a war against society, and that is why decent societies have obscenity laws and try to limit these harmful images. There is a battle in society between thise who want a free-for-all type freedom of expression and those who want censorship. A balance has to be struck.
