Coping with Trolls and Derailers

There have been some very persistent posters on here recently - some of them funny (unintentionally), and some of them not - dragging threads off track so we have to go back and explain something over and over again. I'm all for a lively debate, but there always comes a point when you realise that they are not listening at all, are on a blatant wind-up mission, or are just insulting posters with no intention of debating the original issues.

If we don't want this to happen, and bearing in mind that some people spot the pattern quicker than others, I was going to suggest that we have something like a warning word/phrase that could alert other posters to the fact that they are wasting their time. What do you think? Is this a stupid idea?

Saying "ah, a troll" just adds fuel to the fire you see. But if you were to say "I blame Princess Michael of Kent" or something, and then everyone disappears...well it might work? Grin

Yeah I know you're right, but sometimes I, and other posters, might be so incensed by personal attacks that we feel we have to reply. Or sometimes they hit a spot with a poster and she can't just let it stand. I thought it would be good if someone calmer could point out that it's a good time to leave off.

I hate the fact that they are succeeding in silencing women if we have to flee the thread.

The trolls are doing my head in. I start enjoying an interesting thread and then they fuck it all up, it turns unpleasant and nasty and I don't want to read any more. Doing. My. Head. In.

I tend to vote with my feet and leave the thread. Engaging is only infuriating.

play close attention and keep a spreadsheet (just joking about the last bit)

the name-changers usually trip themselves up, like some numpty did on a thread the other day, and look pretty stoopid when they out themselves

AnyFucker · 11/08/2010 16:56

*pay

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 11/08/2010 16:59

Think I missed that AF.

Doesn't anyone else find it hard to ignore sometimes?

Is it because I haven't had toddlers yet? Grin

elephants, yes, I find hard to ignore and often get stupidly embroiled in pointless arguments

then kick myself afterwards for falling for it...

I really should just keep my trap shut sometimes

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 11/08/2010 18:09

Don't look into the Smurthwaite thread then it'll make your brain ache.

Lenin, it's not just you, there are obnoxious opinions everywhere on MN right now.

Indeed we have a new one but Ic an't argue with him (he admits its a him) as he refuses to enggage with anyone who is not financially a net contributor (so no carers, women escapijng DV, disabled people......)

Think I may be a derailer on MN, sorry. Don;t mean to. Just a campiagner by nature.

ISNT · 11/08/2010 19:13

FOSH?

I agree with Len. And I don't think that saying to another poster to leave it with someonbe/ignore them is rude if the other person is being an arse anyway. It's different to calling them a troll.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 11/08/2010 19:18

OMG sancti - seriously? Shock

Friends of Sebastian Horsley, ISNT. A whole load turned up. Plus one who is very...unusual.

SanctiMoanyArse · 11/08/2010 19:19

Will go look at that thread.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 11/08/2010 19:20

I want to go back over there and ask why saying that someone has been raped is an insult to the victim. But I know there is no point.

OP posts:
SanctiMoanyArse · 11/08/2010 19:25

Oh no, just read first few posts.

A few months ago someone I know was jailed for being a sex trafficker. he only got two years as apaprently the women agreed.

Only, a lot didn;t get to court. He was (is) married to a friend of mine that he abused for many years, one woman he trafficked alledged rape and my friend witnessed it, friend was going into DV accomodation but police blew it in rush to get him for the other stuff.

She ahs constant abusive calls from priosn, after the first two any penalties incurred run concurrently so he can do as he wishes now.

She has his heavies threatening her, they ahve the kid's apssports and she is so damaged she weighs about 5 stones and social sercies have threatened to take her kids into care if the father sees them again but she isn;t strong enough to stop him.

So anyway, there was a newspaper report about this monster when he was covicted and there are comments from all around the world saying he was just providing a service.

It was a horrid eye opener to me as to what these people can accept as collaterel damage of their horrid trade.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 11/08/2010 19:30

We are being called "pillowed lap hounds from hell" at the bottom. And being told that MN should protect all women.

Might borrow that phrase actually, it is quite glorious in its absurdity.

Ideaswelcome · 11/08/2010 19:34

those strange people on the funeral thread really creeped me out, especially that youknownothing (?) youdontwanttoknow (?) one. eurgh.

elephants - there used to be a phrase used 'There R Other Life Lines available' ie troll, that people used.

SanctiMoanyArse · 11/08/2010 19:36

'pillowed lap hounds from hell'

new one on me

TBH once upon a time I would have argues for a women's right to sell sex but then I experienced it (albeit via my friend) as a very real world and changed my mind.

And troll can also be called by using 4 or boden as warnings

though I would suggest 'I am a pillowed lap hounds from hell' may be good?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 11/08/2010 19:40

Maybe!

4 or boden? how does that work?
