Why is practically every human society across all times, places and cultures dominated by men?
I have read that War on Women article that MillyR linked to. It's chilling. Why is it everywhere?

I would be interested in your thoughts, or maybe there is actually a simple, widely accepted answer that I could be pointed to.

Oh FFS! I am absolutely flabbergasted. What a pile of shit that link is. DP where are all these vast majority of people who would agree with you?

Actually I once posted a thread in AIBU asking if we should be able to delete the posts of irritating posters if we so desired and was roundly flamed for it. I think it would be appropriate here though.

Another interesting thread taken over by DP and her nonsense once again.

daftpunk · 01/08/2010 21:17

Women are not held back by anyone except themselves. Girls can achieve everything boys can..sometimes more.

If you want babies, fine, except that decision will probably hold you back professionally...but it's your choice.

If you are stuck in a dead end job with no prospects, stuck in a bad marriage, stuck in whatever awful situation you think you're in...it's not because you're a woman and men are pulling all the strings...it's because you're not very good at making decisions, lack drive and ambition and will probably always fuck up...that's your problem....deal with it.

wukter · 01/08/2010 21:18

How....silly.
That doesn't make sense.

Interesting point about traditional society before Westernisation. Are there any accounts of native Australian's societal arrangements?

Anyway, back to ilove's story

Oh I see, you are here to tell us "how it is", tough love and all that. Gotcha.

Or the inhabitants of the Ape House at London Zoo?

HerBeatitude · 01/08/2010 21:23

Please can we treat Daftpunk like any other troll and ignore her? Back to the discussion...

booyhoo · 01/08/2010 21:24

"it's because you're not very good at making decisions, lack drive and ambition and will probably always fuck up...that's your problem....deal with it. "

thanks for that DP, i always wondered why women had allowed themselves to be oppressed and downrodden for century after century when the world was theirs for the taking all along. you have answered all the questions i will ever need to ask now. it was so simple afterall.

MillyR · 01/08/2010 21:25

We are only here having this conversation because a woman invented COBOL, which allowed different computerised devices to talk to each other.

daftpunk · 01/08/2010 21:26

fair enough, sit around for the rest of your lives moaning about how hard you have it...insulting anyone who dares say that the feminist movement achieved nothing.

All the rights women have at work were achieved by unions...OMG, unions have men in them....and were started by men!

HerBeatitude · 01/08/2010 21:28

Yes thank you I'll sit around moaning about how hard I ahve it =- now please go away as you're spoiling my enjoyment of how hard I have it,.

MillyR · 01/08/2010 21:30

The sex discrimination act came into being as a result of a legal campaign of a group of female paint can fillers in a factory.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 01/08/2010 21:31

My grandfather was kidnapped when he was 5 years old at the family ranch in Northern New Mexico. There is some debate as to whether he was on the ranch itself or over the fence and on a neighboring ranch, not that it matters but where he was taken seems to have been important at the time as a child taken from his own land was deemed outrageous. Anyway, he was taken by one of the tribes who were nomads (think Cherokee?) What's so amazing is how little fuss was created by the whole episode. Apparently it wasn't reported to the police/sheriff, nor were there huge groups of people who went to look for him. He said that he remembers living with the tribe and designated to a couple who didn't have children and was treated like all the other children. He couldn't communicate with them very well, although they managed to speak some Spanish to each other. About 6 months later, he told the Native American woman he was living with, he wanted to go home, so someone took him close enough so he could walk back. Of course his mother was thrilled to see him. No one is really sure why he was kidnapped, although remember asking my great mother and her theory was that the Native American woman didn't want to cause another woman any further pain or grief.

booyhoo · 01/08/2010 21:31

this may come as a surprise to you DP but i am pretty damn happy with my life an dhave very little to moan about thanks to the great work of all the feminists that have made it possible for me to achieve as much or as little as i like through my own choice.

however you could be right, imagine, one day, when i am on my death bed i will say "you know what, i think daft punk was right"

daftpunk · 01/08/2010 21:36

booyhoo

I know it's getting late, but can you please tell me what the feminist movement has done for you personally...y'know, something that wouldn't have been done by another group eventually.

Quickly...off the top of your head..

HerBeatitude · 01/08/2010 21:40

It's given me it hard

Ooh yes, much harder than if I'd left it up to the unions - they're all fat flaccid old men aren't they

Ooh ooh ooh, thank goodness for feminism now I'm getting it hard

Haven't you fucked off yet?

booyhoo · 01/08/2010 21:42

the vote, the right to take out a loan, the right to an education, the right to work and keep my own money.

it is very easy to say that this would have all been done by another group eventually but you know what, it didn't happen when women wanted it so feminists made it happen. why the hell should women have to wait for someone to decide it is time for them to have equality. those women wanted equality and they fought for it. teh women that are still fighting today are continuing the great work because it still needs done and we shouldn't have to wait for some otehr group to work their way down a list before they get to womens' rights.

Aitch · 01/08/2010 21:42

booyoo, do not feed the troll...

MillyR · 01/08/2010 21:43

The sex discrimination act DaftPunk. Many unions, including the teaching unions, argued against the sex discrimination act. Before the sex discrimination act, an employer could legally sack a woman if she got married.

msrisotto · 01/08/2010 21:48

ilovemydog - that's an amazing story! And how little a fuss was involved - bizarre!

Aitch · 01/08/2010 21:53

cos believe me, if it had been on the little house on the prairie they'd have raised a posse and wiped out the tribe...
amazing story, can't imagine what your great gran went through.

wukter · 01/08/2010 22:02

What the Romans Feminists have done for us:

Access to education, both in law and cultural acceptance. I told the story upthread about my friends mum, 40 years ago, forced to drop out to take care of her younger siblings and older brother.
So now I can read.

But Apart From That!

I can plan my family. I am in Ireland. When I was a child a group of women took the Dublin train to Belfast to buy contraception, the hussies. It was impossible to obtain contraception at that time, only if a - you were a married woman, b - had, or said you had terribly painful and debilitating periods, c- a sympathetic doctor. You may be prescribed the pill. Every shag was terrifying to women of my mother's generation.

Apart From That!

The right to say no to any of those terrifying/just plain unwanted shags, from my husband or others, and have that respected.

Apart from that!

I don't have to give up my job when I marry, unlike my MIL.

Just off the top of my head, some fundamental things.

And meant to say, ilove, what an amazing story! Thanks for telling us.

Will you tell me that story every night, if I am good?
