Anyone else excited about the women's euros? I'd love to follow the progress of the teams (especially England) with any football-supporting Mumsnetters. Thrilled that it's a home tournament, commiserations to Scotland and Wales for not making it through qualification. Huge congratulations to NI, qualifying for the very first time.

Doesn't have to be just match-related, either - comments on the background to each women's team (especially from non-British fans), and of course the kits all welcomed.

Do US women do well because they don't have comparable mens soccer profile?

What other women's team sports are there in US that would compete for attention with soccer?

Lots of US men's team sports are high profile but you never hear of women playing basketball, American Football, Ice Hockey etc.

Is that why women's soccer has caught on?

I follow it via FAplayer and hope to visit Walton Hall Park this season.

See you there! 😉

DuncinToffee · 26/07/2022 22:23

The FA banned women's football for many years. Clare Balding did a documentary about it a few years ago, well worth watching.

Riverlee · 26/07/2022 22:06

Yes, arranging to see some matches.

Love this!!

BellaAmorosa · 26/07/2022 22:24

Maybe. "Soccer" is definitely seen as a girl's game, lots of universities have top sides. But MLS (men's game) is as well funded, I think.

Women's basketball is fairly big in the US. But women's American football, baseball and ice hockey are pretty much non-existent.

BellaAmorosa · 26/07/2022 22:30

Watched on delay again! What an amazing game. 4-0! Against Sweden!!!

And yes, I will be going to watch my team next season - I have a season ticket.

Can I just ask if any of you on this thread will be following up this euphoria and going to watch women’s domestic football this season?

Have had a season ticket for a wsl team for a few seasons now.

BellaAmorosa · 26/07/2022 22:34

@Rooster25 , @DuncinToffee
Is there usually a rolling football thread for the WSL?

No but would love for one to be created 😉

I don't mind starting one after the final, we have the board now and hopefully the momentum.

Sport in general is fairly low profile on Mumsnet. Still think there's a big culture of women aren't interested in sport. There's a perception men are a bit Neanderthal for following it. If I say I follow cricket, football or whatever to sone of my female friends they act as if I'm from another planet. And men don't take my interest seriously.

AndNobbyDancing · 26/07/2022 23:11

Agree with the perception that only neanderthals follow sport, comes up a lot on here. I'm on lots of sporting threads, when they make trending they often get derailed due to prejudice/politics and general ignorance.
Sport is imperfect, of course it has its issues but it is also a saviour for so many.

I am proud to say that my son who is an idiot when it comes to choosing the right team to aupport has White, Mead, Russo, and many other women stuck on his wall next to Kane, Ings, Son etc and follows the super league as much as the prem because he is obsessed with football. His friends are just as interested. We are going in the right direction

DoNutSweatTheSmallStuff · 26/07/2022 23:14

Amazing match!

I live in the middle of Wales so there isn't much scope here. I used to play for my local team until a back injury ended my (not very illustrious) career a few years ago.

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 26/07/2022 23:59

Although having said that I did play on the winning side in a preliminary round of the FA Cup.

The magic of the Cup... I hope you enjoyed your experience, @IdisagreeMrHochhauser

Several of the women matches were on tv last season, on BBC. I watched a few of the Man U ones.

CuppaTeaAndSammich · 27/07/2022 10:40

GO LIONESSES!!

Bursting with pride for them. Good luck for Sunday, so excited! 💐

I want to. This tournament has made me want to start watching the WSL.

I am 90% certain France will beat Germany. The other 10% days Germany due to France having played extra time.

Hmmm not so sure.

I think France are vastly overrated. I'd fancy a Mumsnet 11 to give them a game 😊

The Germans will do what they always do: quietly progress through the tournament and then bite you on the arse in the final: usually involving penalties.

Having said that, I thin we're too strong for either of them right now. England to bring it home on Sunday 😍

DuncinToffee · 27/07/2022 19:46

Predictions for tonight? 🇩🇪🇫🇷

I go 2-1 Germany

Possibly... I'm only interested because I slightly know one of the players, I'm not so much a fan of Lionesses but of XX yes. I'll feel invested as long as I think the outcome means I might see more of XX on the pitch. DH is already a fan of pro women's footie & watches several women's sports regularly. He often comments about (footie) the lack of hysterics, better quality sportsmanship, compared to mens' game.

I had to deal with very emotional male office mates today. I'm moaning a lot about men being too emotional today.

littlbrowndog · 27/07/2022 20:02

2-0 Germany
