Anyone else excited about the women's euros? I'd love to follow the progress of the teams (especially England) with any football-supporting Mumsnetters. Thrilled that it's a home tournament, commiserations to Scotland and Wales for not making it through qualification. Huge congratulations to NI, qualifying for the very first time.

Doesn't have to be just match-related, either - comments on the background to each women's team (especially from non-British fans), and of course the kits all welcomed.

It’s going to be so good for girls

Loads will pick up football due to this

wonderstuff · 31/07/2022 20:34

Amazing, both Wright and Scott spoke eloquently about the challenges faced by women and girls football I really hope this changes things, it’s a beautiful game and no shortage of girls wanting to compete at grass roots. In my town more girls than boys in under 14 and U13 teams.

They did us so proud. We shouldn’t forget how hard they had to fight to get there or the fact that women before them were completely barred from playing. Clearly women and girl’s sport is an incredible force for good and needs to be supported.

Doesn't need to be long term. You need to get bums on seats, realise they enjoy it and then they are happy to pay. People support what they know.

I don’t really follow.

The average WSL game attendance is about 3,000, which would not even come close to filling the smallest Premier League stadium, let alone the big stadiums.

I don’t see how you go from such a low attendances to consistently filling stadiums with paying fans, week in week out, simply by handing out free tickets to children and schools for a couple of games, in the short term.

I’ll be really disappointed if WSL attendances don’t improve noticeably next season off the back of today’s win….and it shouldn’t be too much to ask for some new adult fans to pay to watch a game or two.

On another note, does anyone know if the Lionesses will be on a bus going through London at any point?

I’m sure they will, they just don’t tend to announce the plans before the final itself (don’t want to jinx it!). Expect we’ll hear more shortly.

Taurine · 31/07/2022 21:01

Lol, or already apparently.

There is absolutely a place for initiatives like that, but I don’t think that’s a consistent way to fill stadiums, week in week out, over the course of a league season (though of course, long term it would help by creating new fans).

I just think it would be good if more people (particularly women and girls) would consider paying to go to a WSL game or two next season.

Agree, @Taurine
Women especially have got to put our money where our mouths are!

In any case it's already cheap as chips to go to a match, take your kids, etc. There are always great deals for families and often child-focused pre-match activities or entertainment. I really hope people are inspired to go to see their local women's team, or any team in the Women's Super League.

Cannot believe what I have just witnessed at Wembley. Sorry if this has already been said (last read the thread on 15 pages ish!) but the love of the game won today. Not money. Not egos. LOVE.

Florenz · 31/07/2022 21:52

It'll be a lot harder to make women's league football popular as it has to compete directly with the mens game and there is so much mens football on TV. There really isn't an easy solution, maybe they could do a deal where 2 days a week are reserved for womens games, say Friday and Monday?

In her interview one of the girls said they won because not at any single point before or during the match did they think they wouldn’t win. They had 100% belief that they could win.

I was in tears this evening.
What an amazing game.
I was watching with my 9 yr old son who couldn't believe how little England's women footballers earn.
I explained that women's games were just not on the telly when I was growing up.
And how happy I am that for young girls, in particular, they will see women playing for their country.

The team were awesome & I loved when on you of them said. "This is for all the lionesses that have gone before us. All the fire fighters and police women etc... "

A truly historical event. I loved watching the pure joy of them & their manager. I feel profoundly moved.

Go England 🙌🦁♥️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿♥️🦁🙌🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Went to the woman’s FA cup final a few years ago, West Ham were playing but the mens team were also playing at home at the same time. Stadium was half empty until halfway through the second half when the mens game had finished and fans crossed London to get to the womens game. Don’t know what the answer is, but they need to consider timing and schedules and it would be nice, after destroying the woman’s game, if the FA prioritised it.

sadly It’s not as simple as The FA prioritising it. The men have broadcasting deals, which means the women will have to play around them. Fingers crossed the legacy of the Euros will see more live televised matches, giving the women an even bigger platform. With that said I feel it’s counter productive to live attendance, because it’s oh so easy to watch on tv.

Just heard a clip of the press conference with their singing

Still so happy for them

DuncinToffee · 01/08/2022 09:15

Question, I am happy to create a rolling football thread, anyone have an idea for a title?

DuncinToffee · 01/08/2022 09:41

Today's celebration at Trafalgar Square will see Sarina Wiegman and the #Lionesses take to the stage for a trophy lift! 🤩

Please note entry numbers are restricted and there will not be a bus parade before or after.

Good victory by the Lionesses. I think the Lionesses played better than the Germans overall.

However, have to say, what do people think about Germany claiming there was a handball which should've earned them a penalty?

I want to stay away from calling it women's football and it is about more than just the WSL but maybe I am overthinking it Smile

It's come home, the rolling football thread season 2022/23?

@DuncinToffee
Fair point about it being about more than just the WSL, that did cross my mind, and I understand why you don't want to call it women's football, but I was thinking about search terms for women who are relatively new to this - keywords that they would use? Just to make it really easy to find.
It's come home is nice, though!

That is a very good point.
