Time Traveler's wife: Must read or overrated?

boogiewoogie · 16/08/2009 20:55

What do mners think? I've seen this title come up a lot on the AF threads and I know that the film is coming out soon so is this worth reading at all or over hyped trash?

I'll probably end up reading it anyway out of curiosity.

Its the sort of book you ought to read once, I enjoyed it, but wouldn't read it again, as part of the fun is not knowing what'll happen 'next', as much as there can be a 'next' when there's copious amounts of time travel!

MillieMummy · 16/08/2009 21:01

Must read..........

I really rate this book - it's wonderful.

DMonabonfireinadeepdarkwood · 16/08/2009 21:02

first 2/3 are worth reading. Last 1/3 not.

I have picked this up in the bookshop a few times, but can't bring myself to buy it. It just strikes me as a pointless product of the chattering classes.

hambo · 16/08/2009 21:07

loved it

Anonymumandlikeit · 16/08/2009 21:08

hated it

weegiemum · 16/08/2009 21:08

I loved it and blubbed myself silly at the end ....

DailyMailsaysVOTELABOUR · 16/08/2009 21:09

I read it out of curiosity. Felt manipulated by the end. Took a long time to get into and I didn't like any of the characters. It's not worth reading but some people love it.

Tobermory · 16/08/2009 21:09

I found it quite slow-going initially but how I sobbed! Loved it!

andiem · 16/08/2009 21:10

loved it

piscesmoon · 16/08/2009 21:11

I didn't like it-I read it to the end but found it distinctly irritating.

JoeJoe1977 · 16/08/2009 21:11

It's good, but not worth reading more than once.

Tillyscoutsmum · 16/08/2009 21:12

I've read worse books but I didn't love it. Found it difficult to get into but did have a little cry at some points. I didn't feel like I'd wasted time reading it so I suppose it was worth it

Anonymumandlikeit · 16/08/2009 21:12

Yes,irritating.I couldn't warm to the characters at all.

Hassled · 16/08/2009 21:13

I really enjoyed it, if you can call blubbing like a loon enjoyment. It is heartbreaking at times.

stickylittlefingers · 16/08/2009 21:29

I thought it was enjoyable garbage.

Lizzzombie · 16/08/2009 21:31

I really enjoyed it. Its a bit complicated with all the too-ing & fro-ing, but I thought it was an original idea and a good story.
I am looking forward to seeing the film next week.

poppy34 · 16/08/2009 21:34

Loved it but read it when was bit vulnerable so some of the themes touched home- not sure about the film as not sure it's something that you could translate to film

crumpet · 16/08/2009 21:38

Overrated. Clever idea but th ewritign didn't live up to it imo

expatinscotland · 16/08/2009 21:42

overrated.

and the film based on it looks even worse.

it was shitty shite.

Glynne · 16/08/2009 21:50

Overated crappola.

Interesting idea (as time travel stories often are) but charerctres simplistic and story irratating. I just skipped pges at a time to get the gist of the story and read the end.

I heard a good review of the film however from mark kermode who I usually rate, so I may till give that a go.

Also everyone in my book club loved it.

But thet were wrong.

expatinscotland · 16/08/2009 21:51

They sure were, Glynne.

NobodynearaYurtreadstheDM · 16/08/2009 21:54

I agree that it is a book worth reading
I liked it but wouldnt read it again 3 out of 5 from me

The film looks utterly awful, I couldnt even bear to watch all of the trailer!

KnickKnack · 16/08/2009 21:57

not really a must read, but not exactly overrated.

not worth buying...get it from library
