Has anyone started this yet? The first book was just released today.

I'm only a couple of chapters in, and I really want to love it, but I'm not blown away so far. The narrator is good; I do like her voice - it's a nice and soothing voice. I really like the cast voices, but their voices are too quiet and sometimes quite tinny sounding. The sound effects can be really distracting, and too loud - it's quite hard to hear the cast voices over them. I'm hoping it improves!

I can't wait. I have under 2 hours of the last one. Have downloaded HBP can't wait.

Haha me too!!!

Just started book 3! It’s getting me through so much housework

Agree about the ‘Voldemort’ pronunciation being a little jarring. Also ‘ku-nuts’ for the money.

Civilservant · 14/04/2026 21:06

The pronunciation in the films is what was jarring.

Was a lovely surprise to see the Audible notification this morning... can't wait to dive in!🙂

Blueuggboots · 14/04/2026 23:03

I’m really enjoying them.

I'd forgotten about the scene with Dumbledore at the Dursleys when he goes to collect Harry. The part where he talks about them neglecting Harry but at least he escaped the appalling damage they've done to Dudley, and the Dursleys look really confused - apart from Petunia who gets a bit flushed. She knows what she did. It's really powerful. Hugh Laurie delivers it perfectly, in a light tone but hard-hitting words.

Totally agree with this, I've just listened to it.

Like Slughorb as well.

Inferi the (mis)pronunciations shouldn't bother me, but they do...

Although I don't mind Voldemor, because that should have been the case all along.

Haha yes I noticed inferi, which now sounds like In-ferry.

See also Narcissa Malfoy, who is now NAR-cissa.

I can only hear in theory with someone who pronounces th as f

PituitaryPippa · 17/04/2026 08:00

Just finished the Half Blood Prince. The death of Dumbledore had me in tears in a way the movie never did. It was so well done. Powerful and moving 🥺 Will have to prepare myself for the Deathly Hallows as the deaths of Dobby and Hedwig and the part where Harry sees all his loved ones before going to meet his death always make me blub!!

AnotherEmma · 17/04/2026 18:32

I am really enjoying Bill Nighy as Professor Slughorn!

This whole production is such a treat.

LetMeJustCheckMyCitrusPocket · 17/04/2026 21:13

@AnotherEmma Agree! Was a bit worried about his casting at first as to me Bill Nighy is often just Bill Nighy in whatever he does, but he's great here as Slughorn 😁

I thought the same when I saw the cast list but agree he is good.

I have found Harry annoying again, he whines when I didn't read it like that.

Umbridge is still my favourite so far KK was excellent, I am looking forward to when she returns.

AlphabetBird · 19/04/2026 15:05

I think half blood prince has been my favourite. I’m just getting to the bit where they are in the cave, so I need to steel myself. I always resented the films for skipping so much of the Voldemort backstory, so I I’ve really loved that.

Randomchat · 22/04/2026 09:38

Like a pp I'm finding Harry really whiney and annoying in this book. And Hermione sounds exasperated all the time. Her character is like that I guess, but Harry sounds to me like he needs a good slap. Which is mean of me to say, given the life he has and all the stresses, and his family have all died. But I'm finding him hard to listen to.

TheNeighboursComplain · 22/04/2026 15:25

Just finished it. First of all, Ginny 👏 At last a decent actress for this role who is true to the book (I know she's been in the previous books, but she was stand out in this one for me).

Secondly, how good were the actors playing Snape, Draco and Harry in those final 2 chapters?? Snape especially, when Harry called him a coward - you could hear his pain and fury. It was amazing. Harry's devastation and shock at Dumbledore's death. Draco's fear and false bravado in the tower. Oh and the howl from Hargrid when he realised.

Soooo much better than Stephen Fry and the film interpretations.

Please please please let the TV adaptation be this good!

PS I agree Harry sounds really whiney in general though. Stephen Fry didn't make him sound that whiney.

I agree. Voldemort's back story is the best part of HBP for me. It's so interesting, it's a travesty the film missed loads of it out.
