Has anyone started this yet? The first book was just released today.

I'm only a couple of chapters in, and I really want to love it, but I'm not blown away so far. The narrator is good; I do like her voice - it's a nice and soothing voice. I really like the cast voices, but their voices are too quiet and sometimes quite tinny sounding. The sound effects can be really distracting, and too loud - it's quite hard to hear the cast voices over them. I'm hoping it improves!

I like Hermione here-I admit she does often sound exasperated but think that is actually probably how Hermione felt.

To me she is very Head Girl-ish, super keen and enthusiastic.
Very, very full on, and yes, exasperated but I think it is true to book Hermione.

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/04/2026 22:38

I have a shiny new credit today and half blood prince is aaaagessss away

HollyGolightly4 · 05/04/2026 01:30

I'm relistening with insomnia.

'Poppy' pomfrey is annoying me more than I can say!
Madam Maxime is so screechy and loud.
Cush Jumbo remains wonderful.

Same.

This next one contains my favourite opening scene of all the HP books with the muggle prime minister. I can't wait.

And mine @TheNeighboursComplain it is just wonderful.

I thought I wouldn't enjoy Order of the Phoenix because I didn't enjoy Umbridge in the books, but Kiera Knightly is brilliant, probably my favourite so far.

I've also been completely won over by Snape, Alan Rickmans Snape was so cold but this one really gets his 'snivelling' side.

RobinEllacotStrike · 05/04/2026 08:47

Yes to Poppy being pointlessly male is v annoying, I’m loving Snape & knightly is incredible as umbridge.

AnotherEmma · 05/04/2026 14:18

I was never really a fan of Kiera Knightley but I agree she's fabulous as Umbridge.

I'm not such a fan of Snape as I think Alan Rickman's Snape was just perfection.

Love James McAvoy as Mad Eye Moody, though! And Michelle Gomez as Professor McGonagall.

HollyGolightly4 · 05/04/2026 19:19

I think Snape is great

And totally agree about Umbridge!

MrsMitford3 · 05/04/2026 22:00

Agree with lots of the casting opinions above-

weirdly found Lily Evans very small part stood out for how awful she was.
So wooden-sounded to me like she had never seen the lines before she read them off the script!

Reminds me that the small parts are important to keep production values up-and that it shows when they don't!

RobinEllacotStrike · 10/04/2026 21:13

michelle Gomez is spot on isn’t she!

ASongbirdAndAnOldHat · 11/04/2026 14:47

@MrsMitford3 I agree about Lily, but I also find some of the other minor characters (classmates etc) are quite poor, one especially sounds like an adult putting on a child voice, really affected.

I forgot how annoying Harry was in Order of the Phoenix, no wonder Hermione always sounds so frustrated.

DeltaVariant · 11/04/2026 17:23

I think I’m in the minority who hate it. Particularly as in the films they say Voldemort and in this they don’t pronounce the t and it bothers me irrationally.

I have found a few of the different pronunciations jarring.

Voldemort is so weird to change and I also posted this upthread-

Two other weird changes in pronunciation-
they now say "ARITHmincy" almost like one syllable instead of Arith-MANCY
and ParVATI is now Parviti

who decides this stuff???

frenchnoodle · 11/04/2026 17:55

Voldemort with the "T" silent has always been correct, it's dodgy French. Vol de Mort; to out run Death.

It's said like the mort in the word "mortgage".
Which is a pledge (Gage) until death (Mort)

RafaistheKingofClay · 11/04/2026 19:16

i see the silent T as correcting the incorrect pronunciation in the films/previoud audio books.?

ASongbirdAndAnOldHat · 11/04/2026 20:18

Thanks for that @frenchnoodle didn't know either of those things. Love MN for stuff like that.

MrsMitford3 · 13/04/2026 11:31

Now I can't stop.
I guess I feel like if a word was said one way in the films and previous audio books then I can appreciate that if it is actually wrong then they need to change it but the changes really stand out to me and I lose the moment a little-especially now as I feel like I am listening for them.
Why didn't JK tell them how she wanted them pronounced in the first place?

Today's annoyance-and unless this is a real thing then why change pronunciation from Wizard Gamm-AH-t to Wizard Gammit?
Did a wizard complain??

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 13/04/2026 11:50

Draco sounds like a 20 year old in book one.

They aren’t as nice to listen to at bedtime as the SF version.

Some of the characters are a bit screechy.

Edited

Did a wizard complain??

GrinGrin

The pronunciations were really jarring to me too, and I didn't really like books 1-2 because of that (and also the background sound effects). But the other day we watched a couple of the films, and I was muttering to myself "Volde-MOR" whenever a character said "VoldemorT" so I guess I've accepted the new pronunciations now!

Happy half blood Prince day.

This is my second favourite of the books after Azkaban.

RobinEllacotStrike · 14/04/2026 09:21

I'm in the PM's office 😁

I really think they cocked up the HBP film splendidly and I'm really looking forward to this version.

I can't wait. I have under 2 hours of the last one. Have downloaded HBP can't wait.

ASongbirdAndAnOldHat · 14/04/2026 12:51

Although I do hope Harry is a little less petulant. I didn't read his lines like that.
