Has anyone started this yet? The first book was just released today.

I'm only a couple of chapters in, and I really want to love it, but I'm not blown away so far. The narrator is good; I do like her voice - it's a nice and soothing voice. I really like the cast voices, but their voices are too quiet and sometimes quite tinny sounding. The sound effects can be really distracting, and too loud - it's quite hard to hear the cast voices over them. I'm hoping it improves!

@HollyGolightly4 yes, definitely on the edge of hamming it up, but in a good way!

ASongbirdAndAnOldHat · 24/02/2026 22:59

I am struggling with GoF. I have found the Quidditch World Cup really boring, I've read the books at least five times probably more but I don't remember being so bored- but I'm at least five years older so maybe it's that.

It's a shame Ron doesn't sound as west country.

Dropping these here - Behind The Mic: The Making of The Harry Potter Full-Cast Audio Editions

Pt 1: s

Pt 2

Fascinating glimpse of the recording & production process

Thank you for posting these. I’ve just watched both parts and they’re fantastic. I’ve just purchased all 7 books because of viewing the.

Just finished 2nd listen to GoF - really in the swing of it all now. Bring on OofP!

Gosh they really are very complex plots/books, so many fascinating characters. Its been many years since I read the books & I am enjoying them again with new ears.

RobinEllacotStrike · 25/02/2026 10:25

I think my fav voice is Mrs Weasley - I am noticing her more in these versions than in the books.

And rereads are great for catching foreshadowing - Harry seeing Fleur's intererst in Bill briefly in GoF for example.

10th March - they are releasing one a month

Snapespeare · 27/02/2026 08:00

Thank you to previous poster who linked to the making-ofs on YouTube - I'm utterly smitten with Michelle Gomez as McGonagall - someone asked if she was Scottish and whether the accent was a bit much? Yes she is and I love the 'R' rolling and 120% accent - with all of these I think there's a smidge of camp in some characters and McGonagall has that - when she's furious, she's really furious, when she's tired of your shit, she's really tired of your shit and that comes across extra well for me. It's lovely seeing everyone point their wands as they yell spells and hbo Hermione is going to be so, so good. It's been really helpful seeing the craft behind it - I appreciate it more now.

I'm loving it but started with GOF and only half-way through.

I'm finding it really entertaining and distracting from RL so thumbs up from me.

ASongbirdAndAnOldHat · 27/02/2026 15:26

distracting from RL

HP has been my constant when I can't cope with life.

Snapespeare · 27/02/2026 21:20

I'm just finishing off the 2nd 'making of' on YouTube and DAME SHIRLEY BASSEY is Celestina Warbeck - god, she's still got it. How wonderful! It's so interesting to see everything coming together, the sound design, the music, how happy everyone seems to be there.

AnotherEmma · 01/03/2026 09:28

I really enjoyed the making of videos too. Interesting to find out that Kit Harrington is a massive Harry Potter fan! I loved his Lockhart.

Civilservant · 01/03/2026 11:51

was going to mention YouTube too: found one of those and enjoyed watching!

Really enjoyed Azkaban and Sirius. Not far into Goblet of Fire: like a PP found the quidditch match boring.

Agree about Madame Pomfrey. Smaller character and some stereotypes in the writing of the character (like Molly Weasley) but they ring true (on paper and on screen), eg tutting, fussing over noise and visitors disrupting patients’ rest. The male voice and the actor’s performance makes it pantomime dame and is jarring.

Edited

YY pantomime dame, absolutely.

I've forgotten how much animal cruelty there is in the books.

scoobydeedoo · 01/03/2026 21:32

Finally made it onto GOF, I don't know why it didn't fully register at the time I initially read the books (or the probably 20 times after) just how horrible the bit with the muggle family at the Quidditch World cup was.

Much prefer older Draco to younger Draco. Not too keen on Older Hermione, she sounds agitated with every line she says. My favourite from the series so far has to be Sirius though, I wasn't sure on the voice at first but the part in the Shrieking Shack where we learn about Wormtail was amazingly well done, with Sope Dirisu being the stand out actor. It's been my favourite part of the series so far.

I've been so looking forward to this .... lets go!

LetMeJustCheckMyCitrusPocket · 10/03/2026 10:43

Can't wait to dive in but other things eg life keeps annoyingly getting in the way!

scoobydeedoo · 10/03/2026 14:54

Really excited for book 5, although I can't start it until DD has finished it (she listens to it to go to sleep so it won't take her long, we end up going into her room to turn it off!)

Have started from Book 1 again, I definitely think they just get better the further you go with the acting. Sirius is one of my favourites, but also Barty Crouch Jr was amazing, and I'm really enjoying Matthew McFadyen as Voldemort.

IsntItDarkOut · 10/03/2026 18:49

James MacAvoy as Mad Eye is so much fun, he’s really making it for me.

Totally agree, he's an absolute highlight for me and I'm thoroughly enjoying his take on the character 🙂
