I know we still have a long wait but JK Rowling has announced she has completed the next Strike novel: twitter.com/jk_rowling/status/1626688428523016192?s=20

Finished it. Joys of menopausal insomnia and wfh. Story brilliant as always.

You've finished it?
That's impressive.
Think I'll be finished by Christmas!

Did you not take a break?! Or are you a scanner? Kindle estimates its 16 hours of reading

justanothernamechangemonday · 26/09/2023 19:25

Not a Spoiler but MN is in the book!!!

mogtheexcellent · 26/09/2023 19:40

Honestly im a very fast reader and started at 12.30am,slept between 3 and 7 then breakfast and school run and short stop for lunch and a couple of short stops to do some work and dd in a club until 7pm so no distractions.

My kindle estimate was 9 hours which is about right. Will now reread at a slower pace.

MargotBamborough · 26/09/2023 21:35

I'm up to Chapter 20.

Not a spoiler but I am really nervous about Robin going undercover this time.

In my head I'm shouting, "Don't do it!"

SoftKittyBazinga · 26/09/2023 21:36

I’m only at chapter 10 @MargotBamborough and thinking the same. I’m really anxious for her!

SoftKittyBazinga · 26/09/2023 21:37

And, not a spoiler, I’m really glad it’s not written as pages of concurrent chat room conversations. I found that hard going last time!

Melroses · 26/09/2023 21:37

Same at Chapter 7 😬

MargotBamborough · 26/09/2023 21:46

I know she has written some pretty nasty stuff before, you know, severed legs and all sorts, but I don't recall ever actually feeling scared when reading any of the previous ones. I feel like she's really cranked up the level of tension with this one. It's a nailbiter for sure.

QuiltedHippo · 26/09/2023 22:15

Oh I'm excited to get it! My loyalty card for my local bookshop is full so I'll get a discount. Just got a library book to finish and a book club one I don't really fancy first

Please please please no spoilers on this thread!

I was a bit nervous about reading your reply @UnaOfStormhold just in case, thankfully no spoilers and now I am even more intrigued to find out how it ends.

I am going to have to just get my head down and read it through to the end.

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 27/09/2023 10:23

Well now I know there's a cliffhanger ending Hmm

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 27/09/2023 10:25

@CrossPurposes maybe you could ask HQ to add NO SPOILERS! to your thread title?

UnaOfStormhold · 27/09/2023 10:38

Having been a bit spoilered myself by reading a review which disclosed a key scene, I was being careful to avoid giving spoilers and just whet appetite, though I am bursting to discuss it! Perhaps we should set up a "with spoilers" thread.

MargotBamborough · 27/09/2023 10:40

Yes, I have a feeling I have already spoilered myself using the search function on my Kindle. I was searching for a key word to find a quote I forgot to highlight and I saw something in the search results which I would rather not have seen.

Luckily it was a spoiler relating to Strike's personal life rather than the actual case.

EggTheParrot · 27/09/2023 12:42

Made a spoilers thread if anyone wants to join and chat about the book. Maybe we could leave this one spoiler free??

EggTheParrot · 27/09/2023 12:43

Forgot the bloody link!!

Spoilers spoilers spoilers the running grave spoilers thread.. http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/4906913-spoilers-spoilers-spoilers-the-running-grave-spoilers-thread

Just seems nice to leave this thread as a chat and no spoilers!

MargotBamborough · 27/09/2023 12:50

Thanks @EggTheParrot . I'm not a regular on this board. How do spoiler threads work? Is it best to just avoid them completely until you've finished the book, given that we'll all be at different places?

SoftKittyBazinga · 27/09/2023 13:07

Thanks @EggTheParrot. I’m watching the thread for later.

@MargotBamborough yeah. I’d avoid until you’re done. Spoilers in a title means all bets are off. First post could say the ending so enter at your own risk!

Haha the spoilers thread doesn't say the ending in the first post I promise! But it's just nice to have somewhere you can be like Omg!! I didn't see xyz happening!! Mental! '

Etc xx

SoftKittyBazinga · 27/09/2023 13:39

I did really have a ‘ruin everything in post one’ vibe from you Egg 🤣🤣

but this IS mumsnet and weirder things have happened.

Will do. I didn't imagine this thread would be the discussion one back in February when I started it!

Prrambulate · 27/09/2023 15:01

hahaha looks like mumsnet is making an appearance in this one. I hope that’s not a spoiler…

Lancelottie · 27/09/2023 17:39

Tsk tsk, Robin, the 1921 census records were NOT available in 2016.

Hoping that's also not a spoiler.
