I thought the pacing of their relationship was pretty good in this one (given there are around 4 more books..) although it seemed odd to get so much angst from Strike in this novel. I think he’s in a good place for the next one. I just wonder how long the ‘nice boyfriend’ will hold off the next steps.

what did you think of the murderer? I read their name at the end and thought ‘who’? But then it was very late 😂

Yeah they were a bit annoying. Worse in audiobook form. And so many of them!

The Audiobook version is very hard to follow when he reads the tweets I've found this helped me

I feel sorry for Strike's string of recent girlfriends, none of whom deserve to be Robin substitutes. I thought Madeline had a point when she compared him to Rokeby. Obviously he'd never treat a child of his like Rokeby treated him, but still. Plus I thought it made a lot of sense that seeing all that informed Robin's view of what Strike would expect in a relationship.

I've finished, OMG! I didn't guess who Anomie was but I wasn't far off!

Basically abandoned my life to read all yesterday and today so still digesting!

I did guess Anomie.

I also liked Midge, although the rendering of her accent annoyed me. I like the way the whole staff of the agency have developed in fact.

I do think that like Lethal White and Troubled Blood this needed a bit of an edit. It's a bit too long and wordy, and some of the sub-plots were less relevant: not certain what Madeleine added to the plot and Charlotte can just fuck off now.

Yes and the side cases were sort of just there and then got wrapped up very suddenly.

I really liked it (but yes, it could have been shorter) the on line manipulation was well done. Made me think of poor Caroline Flack.

That claustrophobic sense that you can’t get away from the hate whatever you say or do, and truth doesn’t always make a difference was well done I thought. Write about what you know, right?

Also loved Midge and agree on the editing. I feel like the end was rushed, I expected a bit more info and wrap up as well as what happened to some of the characters.
