Right I hope the title gives it away. Spoilers ahoy after / during reading Galbraith's The Ink Black Heart.

I swear if someone complains about spoilers now I'll lose it Grin

OP posts:

If Pez had had better hygiene and clean clothes he might have been ok. I like the Liverpool accent too. At least he didn't push her into having sex or anything too terrible.
Just a chancer really. Even if he was one of the suspects!

OrianaBanana · 01/09/2022 13:50

The repeated mentions of Pez’s penis really made me laugh 😂

The Polworth thing is interesting, driving home how two people can see someone completely differently. Loyal, hilarious and caring (Strike, TB and previous); a bit of an offensive small-minded twat (Robin, IBH).

the80sweregreat · 01/09/2022 13:59

I loved the Latin story from Strike. My dh went to school in London and he did Latin ( only a comp) not that he can remember any of it now.
A few Latin and Greek references in this book too, she likes her classics.
The poems she chose were interesting too.
Nice mix.
Polesworth is just a laddy one isn't he?
Strike knows his got a good heart deep down and used to army bantz etc , but Robin hasn't seen his good side in action so has a different view of him completely.

Yes I thought that was really interesting too. Strike did warn her she wouldn't like him though!

Graffittiunderpass · 01/09/2022 14:09

I couldn't get invested in Madeleine either, I knew she would end up jettisoned 😅

the80sweregreat · 01/09/2022 14:18

Madeline sounded bonkers !
They had only been seeing each other for six months or something? To do that to him was out of order really considering his leg too :( I know she was upset , but still ..
She said he was seeing someone else too ? Did Campbell say this to stir up trouble ?
Or was it a bad edit ?

Justme10 · 01/09/2022 14:29

Just finished and I loved it!
I didn't get the killer, I thought it was going to be Katya.

Was very annoyed with Robin for not kissing Strike but I do think she needs a boyfriend before her an Strike can be together.

the80sweregreat · 01/09/2022 14:32

In TB they decided on being in the ' friends zones , ' so I was a bit ' what ?' When he wanted to kiss her. It didn't flow that well, but they were drunk etc etc.
I thought Katya too tbh. After the visit to them all first time around.

Justme10 · 01/09/2022 14:53

I think the scene was set for a romantic moment with the perfume, the ritz and alcohol. They aren't quite ready to be together yet though.

I don't like that's he's stopping smoking which is probably weird but I just picture him with a tea or beer in one hand and a fag in the other, it's just who he is! Grin

Graffittiunderpass · 01/09/2022 14:55

Am I the only one thing one who goes straight onto Google maps to see the locations described in the books?

fannyfan · 01/09/2022 15:07

The small penis (Matthew) reference made me laugh

Graffittiunderpass · 01/09/2022 15:21

Quality takedown of Matthew

It was so weird as I had the day off in Cambridge to read the book on Tuesday and had just walked the same route Robin and Strike had over the bridge to Caius that morning! I like to visit the book locations (I’m going to Leamington Spa on Saturday) so it was quite funny.

I am in general liking the greater focus on Robin, her increasing self-belief and her becoming more confident/experienced romantically (although her thoughts about how she dealt with the Murphy conversation were funny). I loved how she misunderstood him at first 😂

fannyfan · 01/09/2022 15:36

Ok this is totally spoilers now. Why did Gus kill Edie? Why? When his mum was their agent for a bit? Did he attack josh too because he had to? I didn't get that bit at all!

ISmellLikeRobin · 01/09/2022 15:38

Phew, finished! I ended up making a lot of notes & that slowed down my reading but I was determined to figure it out! As soon as they realised several discounted suspects were back in the running, my mind went to Gus but I thought perhaps Inigo was faking how ill he was as an alibi & I assumed that's who was behind the door until Robin saw him.

Did I miss where it was explained how Anomie & Morehouse met? I abandoned my note-taking around the time they got to Zoe's because my need to know overtook my need to get it right!

JKR is really teasing us with all the hotels, overnights at Robin's, her not wearing a bra & him noticing... I get, from a character building perspective, perhaps it's best if Robin gets a bit more experience/confidence with relationships before they get together so she can see herself as more of an equal to Strike in that regard but also, I'm impatient!

ISmellLikeRobin · 01/09/2022 15:44

I think he killed her because she didn't want to sleep with him & was taking the whole IBH thing in a different direction & criticised his game, which I'm guessing started out as a way to insert himself into her world. He thought she'd see it & be soooo impressed & flattered & fall into his arms. Instead, she rejected it & therefore, him. His brain was so soaked in incel culture that he went from one extreme to the other.

My guess about attacking Josh is because he wanted control of IBH, which he considered his right given that he'd provided a place for fans to get together & thus sustained the fandom. I also suspect he might have felt a little jealous of Josh's relationship with Katya.

I'm really suspicious of everyone online now...

Graffittiunderpass · 01/09/2022 16:00

His pitch about how Amonie would be introduced into the show was the absolute height of arrogance and narcissism.

He was completely delusional.

I thought it was Inigo and that he was faking his Illness, then i remembered Donnie Laing and thought she wouldn't repeat that.

the80sweregreat · 01/09/2022 16:09

I thought it was Katya as she was in love with Bray. That letter that Robin fished out the letter box at the hospital was a bit of a red herring.
I'm glad the Italian gangsters in TB didn't turn up again! I thought that they might.
Strike giving up beer and chips is a good idea
He isn't well. Bless him

Graffittiunderpass · 01/09/2022 16:48

His leg! I was grimacing reading the bits where his leg was spasming

EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn · 01/09/2022 17:23

When I re-read it, one thing I want to pay close attention to is the timeline. Seeing that it starts almost where TB leaves off, it can’t be that long. Not long enough for anything significant to have happened with Rokeby, for instance.

the80sweregreat · 01/09/2022 18:01

I wonder if book 7 will start elsewhere or with Strike coming out of hospital.
He'll hate having to recover for weeks :(
Then watch Robin having some fun with the new guy.

If she does. All of Strike’s relationships over the past few years have ended up with him losing interest for one screamingly obvious reason. I wonder if Robin’s will go the same way?

OrianaBanana · 01/09/2022 18:25

I noticed the alcoholic aspect being made prominent, I wonder what role that will play.

the80sweregreat · 01/09/2022 18:30

I loved the new door window saying both their names
Nice touch there. Equals

aliceinshackles · 01/09/2022 18:30

Not reading the thread yet as book only just arrived.
But the article in the daily mail was amusing to read.
I will return when I've read it.
