Don't post here if you don't want to know who dies and what happens.

You've been warned.

Oh dear Charlee, I may have to sue you for causing me to neglect my ds

MrsWeasley · 26/07/2007 23:24

oh thanks for the link. it will keep my DC happy tomorrow (and me )

BandofMuggles · 27/07/2007 09:58

Have been away and dying to get back and get on here.

Finished it on Monday night.
I was absolutely gutted by Dobby and cried, and when you thought Harry was going to have to die. Didn't cry for Remus and Tonks, or Fred for some reason.

I thought it was abit "Get on with it" when they were in the tent. But FUCK ME the end was brilliant!!!!!

The way she put in the little twists like Harry getting the wand off Draco meaning the elder wand was his. Then the blood in Voldie that meant he could live. Fantastic, explains the Gleam of Triumph in DD's eyes when he hears V used Harry's blood to be reborn with.

And DD's history was great, and so sad.

Then Snape, I think Snape got to me more than anything else. The way he wanted Harry to look at him so he could see Lily's eyes once more before he died.

His story was sad. Explains who that awful boy was, and why Petunia was so bitter.

I don't think there was anyone who did magic late.
LOVED Kreacher being Happy. That was great.

Was disappointed by the last chapter, I thought it would be like a narrative of Neville went on to do this and Harry went on to do that etc. Was okay, but was disappointed. Not the great epilogue I had anticipated.
Also no mention of George, which annoyed me. Did he carry on with Weasley's WW's after losing Fred???
Hardly any mention of others. And what did they all do for jobs???
I would assume there wasn't such a call for Aurors, but it would have been nice if it had been mentioned.

Loved MrsW racing to kill Bella, that was awesome. Was generally excellent despite discrepancies.

BandofMuggles · 27/07/2007 10:00

Dumbledore's Girl, I think Charlie Weasley was in the fight. Pretty sure he is briefly mentioned. Tho can't check as DH is reading the book now.

BandofMuggles · 27/07/2007 10:04

MamaG, Harry couldn't go to Hogwarts as it was too dangerous (til he had to obv) so couldn't talk to DD before. And there has to be a portrait of them first to talk to I think. Except the Headmasters it would seem whose paintings just appear.
That said, why is there no mention of Snape's portrait having appeared when Harry goes to speak to DD at the end???

fawkeoff · 27/07/2007 10:04

well i mmjsut reading it again now......am up to the bit where the 7 harrys are going to fly off poor hedwig and moody.........mental blockage being used as trying to pretend i havent even read it

allmytimeonmumsnet · 27/07/2007 10:12

Just remembered the bit with Hermione when she's explaining how she has made her parents safe. Its quite funny but then she mentions that she's made them think they don't have a daughter. I thought that was incredibly sad. Imagine if she had died and they'd never have known they had her.

I like the fact that some of the characters aren't clear cut good or bad. Snape and Malfoy for example. Malfoy didn't go with the rest of the slytherins V says but we know it was because he was trying to get Harry with C&G. Then Ron rescues him from a deatheater and he is shouting that he is on their side (V's). And yet he has also done some good. Much more like real life.

BellaBear · 27/07/2007 10:17

I think Hermione said that if it all worked out she could sort her parents out?

allmytimeonmumsnet · 27/07/2007 10:19

Band of Muggles: I think that would have been a really nice touch to have snapes portrait there. Why not? Wasn't Nigellus a death eater. Even if some people still think snape was bad they have bad guys in there too. Would have been good to see Harry and Snape resolving things at the end.

Obviously it has to be portraits doesn't it. You can't communicate with the characters in photos etc. Wouldn't it be funny if you could just scribble and image of someone and talk to it. Perhaps even draw on a steamed up window. And then the "person" could complain about how unflattering the image was.

Oh and that reminds me. Wanted to comment on the snapes brink of death memories. Guess it is a wizarding take on "life flashes before your eyes" !

RubberDuck · 27/07/2007 10:22

**I would guess the portraits are just echoes of the people who they were at the time as well. So Snape would still hate Harry?

Odd how photographs don't work the same way - they're just moving pictures you can't hear them speak (otherwise Harry would have been able to have had a heart to heart with his parents' pictures in the photo album)

Triwizardcupcakes · 27/07/2007 10:25

"His story was sad. Explains who that awful boy was, and why Petunia was so bitter."

ooh - had we heard mention of him from Petunia before?

I wonder if Snape's portrait wasn't there because he had been sacked (according to the chapter title) before his death.

MrsWeasley · 27/07/2007 10:29

I found it very touching when Hermione said what she had done to her parents.

BandofMuggles · 27/07/2007 10:31

Don't think it was a flash of his life before he dies, DD told him he has to tell Harry right before he has to face V so that he can do it. Or he might not be brave enough. I think Snape must have wanted Harry to know that he had loved his mother and that he was good really. I loved DD saying about not telling about the best of him.

Petunia says in OOTP that she heard about Dementors when Lily was talking to that awful boy, which I guess you are supposed to think is James, but was actually Snape.

Don;'t think Phineus was a Death Eater cos he was before that time, he is Sirius's Great Grandfather or something, but he was in Slytherin. The only Slytherin Headmaster, before Snape I think.

MrsWeasley · 27/07/2007 10:31

pertunia is heard in an earlier book talking about that awful boy which at the time everyone assumes is james but it turns out to be Snape

MrsWeasley · 27/07/2007 10:32

sorry BOM you got their first

alipotter · 27/07/2007 10:32

I'm just half way through re-reading philosopher's stone and can't believe how many clues there are to the last book.
Does anyone know how much of the other books JK planned before they were written?
I know about the last paragraph etc but I wonder whether she had the last book and first book and then the other books were thought of/written later.
The bit where Snape asked Harry to look into his eyes was the only part that bought a tear to my eye too!

MrsFish · 27/07/2007 10:33

I stayed up till 1am and finally finished it on wednesday night. I thought it was fantastic and tied up most loose ends. I didn't cry at any of the deaths either, I thought there was going to be a major character death... was a little sad about Dobby though

fawkeoff · 27/07/2007 10:35

i dont really think snape hated harry........i think that he didnt want to see lily in him as it hurt him too much....so it was easier to dislike the james in him iyswim

AlbusPercivalWulfricBrianSun · 27/07/2007 10:36

I cried my eyes out on the train into Waterloo during rush hour when Harry goes into the wood to die. Felt v. silly. My fave bits were Kingsley's patronus at the wedding, Mrs W killing Bellatrix, Harry digging Dobby's grave, Snape looking into Harry's eyes and Neville.

MrsFish · 27/07/2007 10:36

I agree fawkeoff

BandofMuggles · 27/07/2007 10:36

I heard somewhere that she'd mapped all the books out by chapter before she really starting writing the first one.
Not sure how true that is tho.

fawkeoff · 27/07/2007 10:38

oh i agre i absolutely loved that mrs weasley bumped bellatrix off......i just didnt expect her to be doing it(was hoping neville would get his own back}

BandofMuggles · 27/07/2007 10:38

I made sure I was on my own when I read it. DH was a darling and had the girls for hours at the weekend so I could read.
I knew I would cry. He could tell I had been when he came to see how I was getting along.
He looked at me like I was mad, then said he loved how I cry over a book

fawkeoff · 27/07/2007 10:39

i know i literally had to stop reading for a good 20 mins when i found out that harry had to die.uncontrolable sobbing actually dp thought a was a complete fruit

BandofMuggles · 27/07/2007 10:40

But Neville killed the last Horcrux. I loved that he was truly Gryffindor enough to pull the sword out of the hat.

If Harry had Avada'd V in the forest he wouldn't have died then anyway as Nagini was still alive. He died later that way as all his Horcruxes were gone.

How cool is it that we guessed that one

Can't remember if it was this thread or the other one where someone asked about the Forest thing.
