I'll start!
Enid Blyton, without a doubt. And still the author who instilled a love of reading, whose books I devoured, and have loved as much all over again reading them to my own children.

As an adult, I guess it's Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine.

Over to you...

Just remembered I read a lot of Eilis Dillon as a child.

girlandboy · 25/07/2018 14:48

@RumerGodden I also love Rumer Godden's books especially In This House of Brede. I love John Wyndham too Smile

As a child... Lots and lots. Enid Blyton wasn’t readily available in my language, I don’t think, so I’ve only read her books at (and after) uni. Took a course in children’s lit and loved them Smile

As an adult, it’s easier: Agatha Christie, Terry Pratchett, Ian Rankin, Val McDermid (because they have all written lots). Other authors I’ve read (most) everything by: Robert Jordan, Siri Hustvet (my absolute favourite), Jasper Fforde, Haruki Murakami, Neil Gaiman, Robert Rankin, Ray Bradbury... I’m sure I’m forgetting someone. Brandon Sanderson’s going to be on the list soon, I just need to get back down to the library. I also need to go through my list of favourite authors and see who’s published anything new lately. Thanks, OP! Grin

Amy Tan

Then probably Stephen King though haven’t read one of his books for years

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 26/07/2018 02:51

don't know, possibly Iris Murdoch or Evelyn Waugh

CramptonHodnet · 26/07/2018 08:35

Would definitely be Enid Blyton as a child. As an adult, Agatha Christie, Susan Hill (love the Simon Serrailler novels, looking forward to the new one), Janet Evanovich (her Stephanie Plum series is my comfort read), Ben Aaronovich, Ian McEwan (although I hated the one about the baby, Nutshell), and Elizabeth Jane Howard (Cazalets are wonderful). I'm sure there must be more than that as well.

CramptonHodnet · 26/07/2018 08:48

And, of course, Barbara Pym Smile

HappyBumbleBee · 26/07/2018 08:52

Nora Roberts - love her books and have around a hundred and ten now - not counted for a while but I had to do a list a few years back so I knew at a glance if I had it or not xx

MotherofPearl · 26/07/2018 08:57

Ah Crampton, you're my book soulmate! EJH and BP are my two favourites. Going to follow up some of the others on your list as you obviously have impeccable taste!

haverhill · 26/07/2018 09:01

Enid Blyton
Elinor M Brent-Dyer - I devoured the Chalet School books.
Terry Pratchett - so wise and witty.
Stephen King - a genius.
Helen Dunmore.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 26/07/2018 10:52

And Sue Townsend

DammitOedipus · 26/07/2018 18:21

I've read a lot of Roddy Doyle. Also my fair share of Hemingway.

GeorgeIII · 26/07/2018 18:25

All of William Boyd’s books

ErrolTheDragon · 26/07/2018 18:26

Terry Pratchett, obviously!

When I was a child, my favourite author was Arthur ransome; as a teenager I had mostly a slightly odd diet of DMs 'woman's weekly romantic fiction', older DBs Alistair Mccleans and Dickens.

LostPlatypus · 27/07/2018 18:41

Enid Blyton, Elinor M. Brent-Dyer (Chalet School), Judy Blume and Gene Kemp as a child

Robert Cormier and JK Rowling as a teen/young adult

Lee Child and Torey Hayden as an adult (warning: Torey Hayden's books are good but also likely to make you cry and potentially upsetting to some). That and any crime novel until I got sick of finding pages stuck together with snot in the ones in my local library. Envy (not envy)

CharltonLido73 · 28/07/2018 20:03

Alison Lurie
Anita Shreeve
Sarah Waters
Kate Atkinson
Tracy Chevalier
Rose Tremain

CharltonLido73 · 28/07/2018 20:06

How could I have forgotten? John Grisham - not so much lately but loads and loads back in the day.

Moominfan · 28/07/2018 20:16

Majorie Blackman
Alice walker my absolute favourite

snozzlemaid · 28/07/2018 20:47

Winston Graham
Diana Gabaldon
Stephen King
Mary Wesley
Agatha Christie
Mo Hayder

lucydogz · 30/07/2018 08:44

Norah Lofts
Colette

BillywigSting · 30/07/2018 08:49

Probably Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, jk Rowling, Tolkien and Road Dahl (though I prefer his kids books)

Read a lot of Stephen king/Dean Koontz too as a teenager.

I had the Enid Blyton stuff but could only ever really get into five go to smugglers top
