I'll start!
Enid Blyton, without a doubt. And still the author who instilled a love of reading, whose books I devoured, and have loved as much all over again reading them to my own children.

As an adult, I guess it's Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine.

Over to you...

Jane Austen. Again and again.

Sometimes I'll divert and re-read Dickens or Dorothy L Sayers. But Jane is my top comfort read.

I've recently inherited my grandmother's copy of Mansfield Park, discovered among my father's things. She died long before I was born and I know very little of her, so it was rather wonderful to find this among the handful of books with her name in (another was her Bible).

SleightOfMind · 23/07/2018 23:21

Diva DH wasn’t allowed Blyton either, Sven Hassell was regarded as quite proper Hmm

Has anyone called Penelope Lively?

JunoMarlowe · 23/07/2018 23:26

As a child Judy Blume,

As an adult my most read author is Mary Wesley.
She only wrote 7 novels but I've read them over and over again! As PP said about the Adrian Mole series, they're my comfort blanket!

As an adult, Iris Murdoch, John Irving and Ian Rankin.

I definitely think there is a law of diminishing returns with prolific authors though - John Irving and iris Murdoch in particular I loved the first couple books, but they started to get repetitive after a while. Anyone else eel the same?

Noel Streatfield

JK Rowling
Nancy Mitford

@TheGirlOnTheLanding I agree re John Irving-garp and Owen Meany utterly brilliant-by the time I read (can't even remember title-some divorce thing where the guy was creepily like my father) it was pretty diluted...

BarefootHippieChick · 24/07/2018 08:49

As a teenager, about 200 Sweet Valley High books. As an adult, about 60 Agatha Christie books.

MonkeysMummy17 · 24/07/2018 09:09

Enid Blyton sparked my love of reading too op!
If I read a book and enjoy it I'll look for others by the same author, particularly; Jeffrey Deaver, Lee Child, Sophie Kinsella, Cecilia Ahern, Stuart Macbride, JK Rowling (and alter egos).
Trying to expand my reading material so following this for inspiration

As a child - Enid Blyton.

As an adult I've tended to go through phases of reading everything by a certain author, then moved on to another. I've read everything by Dick Francis, Robert Goddard, Lee Child, Emily Barr, Elly Griffiths, Felix Francis, Sue Grafton and probably lots of others I can't think of now.

Freyanna · 25/07/2018 13:52

Enid Blyton as a child

Patricia Scanlan
Roisin Meaney
Ellie Dean
