It doesn’t have to be the most notable or worthy, I’m just interested in which one you actually enjoyed the most so far. I think mine is To the Bright Edge of the World by Ivey Eowyn.

Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds.
All the Light We Cannot See was a close second.

I've previously read This Thing of Darkness- what a tremendous book! One of the all time best, IMO.

My book club's book this month is Eleanor Oliphant. It's so awful, I just can't see what people like about it!! One-dimensional. The dialogue is like something from Eastenders. All the subtlety of being hit over the head with a brick. But I realise I am in the minority.
Best thing I've read this year is "Far Cry from Kensington" by Muriel Spark. If you've never read any of hers give this it a go, either FCFK or the Girls of Slender Means, before Miss Jean Brodie.

One Good Turn- Kate Atkinson. I haven't read a book for 2.5 years and after trying a few in the last couple of weeks this is the one that has got me reading again.

Best I just read is the one I just finished: Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. I can't believe I haven't read it already I thought it was beautifully written, amazing story and engaging characters. Loved it so much.

Am currently 20% through Life After Life. After finishing the jackson brodie series thought I would give it a go. I really enjoyed 2 out of the 4 JB books (the first and last) and enjoyed the middle 2 but didnt love them.

I suspect Life After Life will be my favourite so far.

AgentProvocateur · 05/04/2018 07:52

Another vote for The Heart’s Invisible Furies. Loved it b

A House Without Windows

carbuncleonapigsposterior · 05/04/2018 10:58

Read it a few years ago, but I loved Life after Life Frouby.

LJdorothy · 05/04/2018 10:58

Can't get The Underground Railroad out of my head. Brilliant but so harrowing. I thought The Dry was great and really enjoyed Eleanor Oliphant, though I had some reservations, as I felt the main character would/should have received far more intensive professional long term support after her traumas.

Uprooted by Naomi Novik. Lovely fantasy fiction that isn’t part of a 25 book series!

KurriKurri · 06/04/2018 20:10

Also loved Eleanor Oliphant.
I enjoyed the Wonder by Emma Donoghue.

Currently really enjoying The Column of Fire - Ken Follet, which my sister bought me for Christmas - it's a good weighty (as in it is a thick book !) historical/family novel - set in Tudor times, if that is your kind of thing.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/04/2018 20:14

Good to see all the love for This Thing of Darkness - a superb book.

My two so far are:
Non-fiction
Walking in Berlin: A Flaneur in the Capital - Franz Hessel
Fiction
An Almond for a Parrot – Wray Delaney

colouringinagain · 06/04/2018 20:22

The Wolf Border by Sarah Hall, clever story, great writing and characterisation and set in Cumbria which I love.

Just about to start The Dry so good to hear Enthusiasm

1sttimeunicorn · 06/04/2018 20:22

Going to definitely read some of these. Currently really enjoying ‘the paying guests’.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/04/2018 20:24

I liked The Dry apart from the ending. Dp has just read it though and hated it!

Jenijena · 06/04/2018 20:25

All the light we cannot see by Anthony Doerr. Absolutely brilliant book. I read it in the first week of January and suspect it will be my book of the year.

SatsukiKusakabe · 06/04/2018 20:40

remus I just made my husband read TTOD and the other night he was muttering something as he was going to sleep and when I asked what was the matter he said, only half awake “argh I’m just thinking about Fitzroy...” I knew exactly what he meant Smile Got my dad on it now, too.

Derren Brown’s ‘Happy’ was a surprise hit for me. I loved it and have found it quite transformative.
And, following recommendations on this site, ‘The Farseer Trilogy’ by Robin Hobb.

KreigersClones · 06/04/2018 23:44

Lost Boy by Christina Henry. A retelling of Peter Pan With Captain Hook as the protagonist. Was totalling engrossed.
Also thoroughly enjoyed Alice by the same author, a dark retelling of Alice in Wonderland.

Murine · 07/04/2018 06:46

Sing,Unburied,Sing by Jesmyn Ward was wonderful, I kept thinking about it for a long time after it ended.

Solasum · 07/04/2018 20:31

I have just finished the Underground Railroad, and enjoyed it.

MsAwesomeDragon · 07/04/2018 20:40

Aftermath by Kelley Armstrong.
It's really gripped me. It's not an enjoyable subject, as it's the story of teenagers affected by a school shooting. I'm completely engrossed and invested in those kids lives. The 2 main characters lost a brother each in the shooting, and we see their lives as they are 3 years later and how the tragedy affected them and their families.
