Oops, I thought I’d read the whole thread when I posted but just spotted a page I somehow missed!

Reading the book you guessed was my initial thought too but I wasn’t quite sure it fitted so I pondered it for a while, then had a flash of inspiration and I actually think it’s something much more recent.* Which is what I put as my answer. Who knows when we will find out.*

OMG, I spent so long staring at the Costa 2017 shortlist thinking I was going mad! It's the 2016 one!

never mind...got it now. silly autocorrect! 3 to go...not bad for a Dutchman I think (well, woman). Bit stuck on the 'smiling, laughing' one though.
