This month we are delighted to bring you Hoot Owl, Master of Disguise. This hilarious tale from masterful storyteller Sean Taylor and celebrated graphic artist Jean Jullien tells the story of Hoot Owl, an extraordinary owl and master of disguise, and how he uses his expert camouflage powers to trick his unsuspecting prey.

Laugh-out-loud and boldly illustrated, Hoot Owl is the perfect book for reading aloud together and we think you'll probably enjoy it as much as the kids.

Walker Books have asked us to find 50 Mumsnetters to read Hoot Owl and tell us what they think about it on this discussion thread. Go to the giveaway page to find out more and apply for a free copy.

You don’t have to win a free copy to take part in the discussion. Anyone who has read Hoot Owl can post their feedback here, and all who post before 25 April will be entered into a prize draw to win a £100 Love2Shop voucher.

I didn't get this in the giveaway but saw Sean Taylor at Discover this afternoon. My DDs and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting him and love the book. The language is rich, the repetition and the humour are excellent for young children and the illustrations are clear, bright and colourful. My DH has just read it to both of my girls, complete with silly voices. They joined in and were all in fits of laughter. I have to confess that I hadn't heard of Sean Taylor before seeing this thread, but will definitely be looking out for more of his children's books.

The book arrived today and my six year old daughter immediately started reading it. She loves owls and enjoyed reading out loud to her brother and I. A great book to share.

A beautifully illustrated book with brilliant bold pictures. Good repetition for little ones to follow - a fab book. Thank you for our copy. :)

Amazing children book!
I wish I was a little girl again so I could fully enjoy this book!
The illustration is an absolute delight, and the story is really catching.
All the animals are amazing, and we know kids love animals very much.

Not bad

My DS (3) and DH both love Hoot Owl. We received the book in the giveaway and just a week later I have sticky tape holding the book back
in the cover as it is suffering from being 'loved' too much. He really gets the humour and loves the different disguises. 'I am Hoot Owl. I am hungry' is a new favourite catchphrase. He talks along to the simpler phrases in the book. I really like the bold illustrations and general page design which makes it stand out from other picture books we own.

My neice loves this book. She loves the bright colours. She joins in with the story. She is 2yrs.

A very funny book with great illustrations which would appeal to youngers and oldies alike!

nonnyno · 03/04/2016 16:06

It's a hoot!

Britchic · 03/04/2016 17:03

Thank you so much for my copy of this book! It's beautiful, great illustrations (reminds me a lot of the Meg & Mog books, which I love). My son found it hilarious, and has been calling himself a 'master of disguise' ever since! Thank you!

PiaMaria79 · 04/04/2016 14:33

We were very happy to receive the book, as they say, one can never have too many books and I personally love the possibility to choose come bed time so that I'm not constantly reading the same old books. The book looks very interesting, simple colours but they work. We did have a few horrified looks though when the Hoot owl wanted to eat very odd things along the story so I wouldn't read it to a very young child, our boys are 5 and almost 4 so it wasn't a big deal. The boys did enjoy it and we have read it quite a few times so far :)

Have read loads of reviews about this book and it does seem good. However my DD gets scared of the cover so won't let me buy it

mugglelady · 04/04/2016 23:06

Thankyou Mumsnet for our copy of the book. My 5 year old son loved it! Very funny, great illustrations - we both very much enjoyed it. Thankyou.

DD (3) was super exited (a)to get to open the package (b) that she was able to open the package all by herself (c) that it contained a book... A new book... Her new book. She immediately started flipping through the pages and looking at the pictures. She said "thank you for getting this book". When we read it at bedtime, she was engrossed even though she was very sleepy from a long day out with grandparents. She tells me she likes the book. Which bits? The owl... And the pigeon. She asked a few questions about the people in the book illustrations, so she was really taking it in. When she saw a copy of the book in a shop she was happy to say that we had that one now.
I was a bit nervous at the start that it could turn out to be a tad gruesome because I didn't check it out before reading it together, but I was relieved to find that it was quite funny and clever as well as being beautifully illustrated.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As a parent it's so refreshing to enjoy the book you read your children. It's funny and not sickly sweet like some little girls books. It will be a couple of years before my baby can properly appreciate it herself but I enjoy being able to read to her even at this stage and it's nice not to be bored by what I'm reading!

debjani · 09/04/2016 18:42

Great bold illustrations by the man who came up with the 'Peace for Paris' symbol after the attacks there last year. English text is slightly stilted though and reads a bit like a translation somehow. Nevertheless, I'm sure DN aged 5 will love it.

Good fun

pepicola3 · 11/04/2016 20:24

We love this book! :)

emmaMBC · 12/04/2016 14:39

Deliciously funny. Great descriptions formed from fabulous word choices. Hoot Owl is a great character who will not be discouraged! Great fun to read out loud.

peanutmum111 · 13/04/2016 00:02

Now becoming a family favourite. As the reader, I love the feel of the paper and the illustrations are superb. My boys love the concept of 'disguise' giving them a new word to practice.

ginsoakedgirl · 14/04/2016 17:09

Read this book with my 6 year old and 3 year old daughters. Both loved the story and adored the illustrations. I think that the biggest strength of this book though is that it is a story that is enjoyable for adults too. It has a sense of 'Hey Duggee' about it - I laugh as much as the kids when we read it. It's even printed on lovely thick paper. It has become a firm favourite at bedtime in our house. We've even been known to drop a quote from it here and there when it's close to meal time!

Clairemike21 · 15/04/2016 09:50
