This month we are delighted to bring you Hoot Owl, Master of Disguise. This hilarious tale from masterful storyteller Sean Taylor and celebrated graphic artist Jean Jullien tells the story of Hoot Owl, an extraordinary owl and master of disguise, and how he uses his expert camouflage powers to trick his unsuspecting prey.

Laugh-out-loud and boldly illustrated, Hoot Owl is the perfect book for reading aloud together and we think you'll probably enjoy it as much as the kids.

Walker Books have asked us to find 50 Mumsnetters to read Hoot Owl and tell us what they think about it on this discussion thread. Go to the giveaway page to find out more and apply for a free copy.

You don’t have to win a free copy to take part in the discussion. Anyone who has read Hoot Owl can post their feedback here, and all who post before 25 April will be entered into a prize draw to win a £100 Love2Shop voucher.

Thought it was a fab read, very enjoyable

slbhill42 · 23/03/2016 18:27

3 nights on the trot was enough for me, and thankfully my 3 year old's attention moved on after that! Definitely a good read though :-)

windowmouse · 24/03/2016 11:23

I liked this and the kids thought the pictures were ace!

FoxInABox · 24/03/2016 14:34

Received mine today and immediatly read it to my three year old DS. He was so animated, absolutely loving the book and seemed convinced Hoot was some type of villain for trying to eat the animals! He laughed at each new disguise, particularly the mother sheep. I thought some of the words were very advanced so it isn't something I would expect a young child to read alone, it didn't affect my sons understanding at all, and the pictures and lay out are lovely.

A really good funny read

Oh wow! My free copy arrived yesterday and we thought it was awesome. I had never heard of Hoot Owl before but found the story funny and engaging with an easy rhythm.

alison991 · 25/03/2016 16:04

This looks like a fun book that little ones would love

wooohooo · 25/03/2016 17:15

Fun book to read

alipally94 · 25/03/2016 17:23

Love this book. It has a lot of humour in it and I love the graphics of how the owl looks. Its a pleasure to read.

Anitata · 25/03/2016 18:23

A good read. An educational story.

26jibby · 25/03/2016 20:05

Fabulous my daughter thought it was really funny.

MrsRedWhite214 · 26/03/2016 18:24

A bold and colourful book with a bit of fun. Owl takes himself a little too seriously trying on different disguises to catch his prey. The end of the book is fab as he stalks and catches something special. The costumes are great and the illustrations really bought it to life.

We received our book this week, thank you MN.
I sat with my DS aged 4 and he absolutely loved it, DS now wants a new bird bath!
The book brought up useful questions about what owls like to eat and I'm always very careful not to de-sensitise him about the cruelty of nature and teach him about the beauty of nature too. DS seemed to take all of this on board.
But I've only read the book once as DS takes the book to DH regularly now and it's their favorite story to read together which is a big bonus for me as DH seems to fear reading to DS (I don't know why).
All in all a well written funny story and wonderful pictures.

We received a free copy of this - thank you!
I have to admit that I loved the story but wasn't sure that my 2 and 3 year old would 'get' it - v happy to be proved wrong though, it's become a firm favourite. Being read on average 3 times a day and has them absolutely spellbound - thank god and thank you!

cavylover · 28/03/2016 16:25

Laugh out loud funny book with excellent illustrations. I liked the way the owl's eyes stood out on the cover. Looks like there will probably be a follow up as well. Excellent.

Flybygirly29 · 28/03/2016 22:01

My little girl loves this book we read it every night at bed time! She loves the illustrations...I thought she might find the book a bit creepy with the whole eating things up but she's a big fan!

mollychopin · 29/03/2016 12:29

Thank you mumsnet for the copy of Hoot Owl. My 3 year old loves it. I love the repetition of certain sentences as my daughter can join in and she has traced the outline of the drawings with her fingers. A great book.

likethemapples · 29/03/2016 12:47

Thanks for the free copy! I thought this might be a bit young for my 5 year old but she loves it and we've read it every night since it arrived and Italian sausage pizza has been requested for dinner. Nice broad range of vocab and funny story. Love the bright, bold illustration. Now we can imagine what the owls we hear outside are up to - doesn't look as if their mummy sheep disguises have been effective either!

KiriJ · 29/03/2016 12:54

Love the artwork and the more grown up humour. Think most of it went a bit over the kids heads but it doesn't take away from their enjoyment (even the slightly scary descriptions!).

KiriJ · 29/03/2016 12:56

Thank you for the free copy!

LizMay29 · 29/03/2016 13:12

This book is great, my little one is a bit young for it at the moment but my husband and I laughed out loud!

sheiladore1 · 29/03/2016 14:01

We really enjoyed this book thankyou

peanutmum111 · 29/03/2016 15:30

The look of the book and wonderful illustrations invite everyone to read. As the reader I loved the feel of the quality paper too.
Lovely story, with the owl, the children loved reading the 2nd and 3rd time and knew what was happening. Definitely a book to read again and again .

yogamum78 · 29/03/2016 15:52

This book is a huge hit with my family. It was an instant favourite with my 13 month old. She has me read it at least 2-3 times every night. My husband things this story is hilarious and always laughs at certain parts. The illustrations and the writing are both absolutely brilliant. I'm a designer myself and I think the whole book is just put together so well. I'm so happy to have found such a great book to add to our library of children's books. My daughter really loves this book. She kisses the images of Hoot and of the Bunny in the beginning of the book!

Hoot Owl is a great family read. The repetition keeps my youngest engaged and encourages him to read aloud himself. It is a fun story too.
