pro's and con's of boarding schools?Help needed

Dh and I are tentatively thinking of boarding school for ds and I'm curious to know peoples opinions .Dh and I are a bit divided -most of rl friends sons go-and dont know what to think or do.Only new to the whole MN thing so please be gentle.

Boarding school...well I think there are situations when this in your childs favour...we are army, and whilest with teh retgiment and not settled once they get to a certain stage in education where you just don't know if you can stay long enough in one place and what sort of school your child will go too, bschool might be just the right thing!
Otherwise...not sure why anyone would send their child there, tbh....I mean I personaly did not have children to have them live away and educated away(normal school, ocal one thing, but different town only seeing in Holidays, etc..another!)...iykwim

I agree with 3andmore. Why have children if you are going to send them to boarding school. You brought your son into world. Loo after him rather than'SEND HIM ELSEWHERE'. Sorry if sounds harsh but just my opinion.

Pros: you get to get pissed every night.

Cons: farming your child out for someone else to rear. Exception, you work in a shithole abroad the way my dad had to to keep his damn job and have no choice.

IMO, not a whole lot.

Or not even that.

You just know you're going.

I cannot think of any reason, why I would ship my kids off to boarding school. HOw could you wake up every morning with your kids somewhere else.

Dp was sent off to boarding school and in all honesty- it has done him no favours,a major problem being -he hates his mother. Not healthy.

B/c I had contact w/lots of kids who parents worked abroad, I knew many who went to boarding school.

Nah.

Not for me.

I'm glad I was spared and my dad didn't take those assignments till I was at uni, or he went on his own.

I couldn't do it, not unless it was them begging me to let them go, and even then I wouldn't want to do it.

Don't see the point of having kids if you don't bring them up.

I knew plenty who liked it, Pruni.

And many who didn't.

BUT, for the most part, the only people I knew who went were the children of other 'oil people' whose folks were abroad and there was no other schooling option.

DP's gran told me this awful story of going to visit dp at boarding school, and a much younger boy ( about 6/7) was upset because his mother had not sent him a birthday card- she said she cried and wanted to take him home.

I went to a small rural boarding school for 5 years and found it pretty unbearable. The bullying was ferocious and there weren't the asme restrictions on the teachers as there are in state schools. I wouldn't send my children in a million years.

But I know plenty of people who loved it, too. I'm not sure what makes the difference - except that my home life was even worse, so I was more afraid of having to leave than having to stay.

dp does not say anything about bullying, His main problem is the very fact that he was sent to boarding school.
