I can 'do' The Grinch without the book (or I could at the height of ds1's addiction)

...or have i... feck knows
...or the one where she fakes a sore throat just to get a bit of attention from 'doctor dad'

Charlie and Lola could easily take Topsy and Tim in a scrap. And IMHO it's well overdue.

Green Eggs and Ham is by far the best Seuss. Fox in Socks second place.

Harry & his bucket of dinosaurs is currently flavour of the month here - no idea why, it's well ropey. Percy Parkeeper is running a close second (for some reason all the animals have northern dialects, odd that).

I've never taken to Gruffalo or, much worse, his child. Aarrggh, but the DC love them - DD's best Christmas present was a box of the audio CDs of all the Donaldson Scheffler stories - she loves 'em. My tune for the smartest giant is much better than the one on the CD. BTW we have a duplicate copy of the book and CD BNIB if anyone needs a copy.

When we've bought all the Charlie and Lolas we'll move onto Rascally Cake and other recommendations.

PS I love Owl Babies - you get to do a great voice for Bill and DS very early on would say "maybe a fox got her" with great concern which always creased me up

I love the Bear Hunt story - used to be a Rainbow Guider and they just loved the actions. Have happy memories of it - intend to get it for my dd soon.

what!?

SorenLorensen · 15/02/2006 21:18

I detest Percy the Park-keeper. I call him Percy the Paedophile - he's so creepy.

Pip · 15/02/2006 21:26

I LIKE Bear Hunt.
Like the illustrations too.

Like Gruffalo too but thought that Charlie Cook book was boring.

MrsSpoon · 15/02/2006 21:29

At the moment we love:-

Pooh is that you Bertie - this is really fab
Anything Dr Seuss
The Gruffalo
The Snail and the Whale

Not too fussed on:-

The Gruffalo's Child
The Smartest Giant in Town (DS2 always requires me to sing)
We're Going on a Bear Hunt

Hate:-

Sitting Ducks is that Jez what's his name?
Anything Thomas the Tank/Postman Pat/Bob the Builder - great cartoons but awful stories to read, yawn!

suzywong · 16/02/2006 05:21

I loathe with a passion any Disney spin-off made into a ladybird book, usually by an illiterate half-wit with English as a fourth language who has never once read aloud to a child and does not understand that text should be accompanied by the relevant illustrations, not just put on a page with a screen cap frame that the picture editor told them to use.

I don't much care for the Gruffalo eihter, nor Preston Pig and there is a modern, well 80s version of Tootles the Taxi that has ruined the scansion by altering some lines of the original rhymes and introduced new vehicles like Susie the Scooter (so easy to park) ffs.

I love Bear Hunt, I have had actions to all the swishy swashy bits.

BudaBabe · 16/02/2006 06:06

Thought I just didn't "get" Bear Hunt - glad it's not just me!

Like Gruffalo though. And Hairy McClary.

Got to go - DS just woke up!

Clary · 16/02/2006 07:55

gomez, Peepo is about Allan Ahlberg's childhood during the war (he was born in 1938).
Yes, why does it make us all emotional? I think it's because the little baby is going to bed after his busy toddler day, everything is nice and normal, the cot made ready, his sister with his teddy, but meanwhile his dad's in uniform and bombs could be falling around them.I love the line "a mummy with a baby just like him" I guess we've all held a baby at a mirror and said "look, there's a baby like you" and watched the baby geek at himself....

Steala · 16/02/2006 08:08

Enid, I've got the Giant Jam Sandwich! Love it and remember it from my own childhood. If only I could find Huff the Hedgehog....

winnie · 16/02/2006 08:39

I hate it simply because when I worked in a bookstore instead of 'error' coming up on the system when searching for any book went wrong "we're going on a bear hunt" would come up instead... every bloody time!

Enid · 16/02/2006 08:43

theres an official tune for the smartest giant ?

mine goes

'one of his socks is a bed for a fox
my shoe is a house for a little white mouse (etc etc)
buuuuuuuuuuuuuuut (pause) look-me-up-and-down
IIiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiim the smartest giantin town'

Beetroot · 16/02/2006 08:55

veuveclicquot · 16/02/2006 10:02

I spent ages trying to find Ant and Bee books for DD only to find out they are now out of print and very expensive collectors items.
