i love the rhythm of Farmer Duck. quite refreshing after the general doggerel of children's books rhymes. unexpected rhymes just when you think it's prose (if that's the right word).

SorenLorensen · 15/02/2006 15:40

Now wait a minute, Mr. Socks Fox!

When a fox is in the bottle where the tweetle beetles battle
with their paddles in a puddle on a noodle-eating poodle,
THIS is what they call...

...a tweetle beetle noodle poodle bottled paddled
muddled duddled fuddled wuddled fox in socks, sir!

Fox in socks, our game is done, sir.
Thank you for a lot of fun, sir.

Try saying that after a couple of glasses of wine.

Owl Babies is similar. 'She'll bring us MICE and things that are NICE'...

Blackduck · 15/02/2006 15:47

One Fish, Two fish...
love this.....

wilbur · 15/02/2006 15:50

Arf at this thread... Have to say my passionate hatred is reserved for all things Maisie Mouse, don't know why, just loathe that rodent. Don't mind bearhunt - frayedknot, dd's music group still do the rhyme slapping on knees (no gun tho). And [drops voice to a low embarrssed whisper] we don't have the Gruffalo. Will I be asked to leave the middle classes?

SorenLorensen · 15/02/2006 15:56

Get thee gone, wilbur - and do not darken this thread again!

Troutpout · 15/02/2006 16:39

Gruffalo
bearhunt
guess how much i'll bore you
squash and a squeeze

all crap

But my real venom if reserved for:

'The big book of things that go'
and
anything by the Reverend

love
The Giant Jam Sandwich... (Enid you are wrong...We have it too)...great book

Troutpout · 15/02/2006 16:41

Owl babies makes me wobbly too Moo!
...and Once there were giants

fullmoonfiend · 15/02/2006 17:02

All I can say to those who have mentioned Thomas and Co. Imagine, I have had eight years (8!) of reading bloody thomas the bloody tank engine EVERY night (for 8 years, did I mention). Ds 1 was train mad from the age of 1 and then, just as he started to grow out of them, ds2 started demanding them. he is five and shows no sign of going off them yet. Whimper. . .
I beg and plead to be allowed to read the Gruffalo, Farmer Duck - yes even Bear hunt - but no, back to fecking Rev Awdry every time. And I get told off if I don't show proper respect to the trains by putting on silly voices to amuse myself. Humph.

Blu · 15/02/2006 17:14

Smartest Giant fans - how do you make that irritating song scan? It defeats me very time.

I thought most of these books drove me a bit mad (anything by Lauren Child has diplomatic immunity) until I was forced to read the re-hash of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the book of the film) twice a day for the whole of August.

mousiemousie · 15/02/2006 18:11

Blu · 15/02/2006 18:12

Enid - tell me how to read the song in 'Smartest Giant'!

Enid · 15/02/2006 18:12

i have a tune for it

but how can i let you know what it is?

will try

Blandmum · 15/02/2006 18:14

You can sing all the sorting hat songs to the tune of the Lincolnshire Poacher

FrannyandZooey · 15/02/2006 18:14

Why does Peepo make us snivel? The first time I read it I was completely taken aback by the tidal wave of emotion that hit me on the penultimate page. Nothing sad or particularly moving is happening - what's it all about?

Frenchgirl · 15/02/2006 18:14

shall I send you my CD of Let's go on a bore hunt then cod?

I hate it with a passion
it goes on and on and on and on

I don't think dd ever liked it tbh...

Blandmum · 15/02/2006 18:17

I was totaly over whelmed by the emotion of peepo as well.

I think for a few reasons, the houses look just like my grandmothers, my kids love the RAF uniform in one of the pictures and shout daddy!

It shows people raising happy kids in a time of great threat, and the simple cycle of life thing. the baby in the book would now be a grandparent, our kids will grow up and grow old, childhood is a short a tender thing.

Sniffle, I'm off again

Frenchgirl · 15/02/2006 18:19

I'll send you the CD martianbishop, you won't be feeling emotional then

it is pure torture

I recommend you play it to your pupils who misbehave

FrannyandZooey · 15/02/2006 18:33

If you are seriously wanting rid of your cd Frenchgirl I would happily take it off your hands. We like Bear Hunt here

SorenLorensen · 15/02/2006 18:34

Does no-one else like Dr Seuss? We love his books!

Blandmum · 15/02/2006 18:36

I love Dr suiss

I can 'do' most of the cat in the hat wihtout the book

gomez · 15/02/2006 18:37

But Peepo was first published in 1983 I think - 'tis all a bit strange.
