MySunshineInGreySkies · 11/03/2012 22:51

Supposedly, it's a brilliant novel, anyone read it?

sassymcnassy · 11/03/2012 23:37

you could ask in the fiction section. This is AIBU.

muffinino82 · 12/03/2012 00:11

On the basis that it started out life as Twighlight fanfiction YABU.

BitchyNoMore · 12/03/2012 00:15

Read it? wouldnt bother.

try this review

winnybella · 12/03/2012 00:15

Apparently it's shit, very poorly written, lots of repetetive language, lots of 'blushing' and 'gasping', wooden characters etc.

But then lots of people are raving about it. I think they may be not the most discerning readers, though.

BitchyNoMore · 12/03/2012 00:16

Muffin there will be fan fiction about fan fiction next Hmm

muffinino82 · 12/03/2012 00:26

Muffin there will be fan fiction about fan fiction next

I've probably read worse Blush Grin

BitchyNoMore · 12/03/2012 00:44

Some of it is truely shocking isnt it. Some fabulous stuff out there though.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 12/03/2012 06:24

YABU
I never read it when it was fic but I'm damn sure there is better and hotter fic out there for free! Come and say hi to the TSA if you want some recs...

LyssaM · 12/03/2012 07:38

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight - I think your information may be interesting, but I didn't understand it. Any clues for those not in the know?

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 12/03/2012 08:19

Oops sorry! Fifty shades used to be a fanfiction called master of the universe. Based on twilight. There are hundreds of thousands of fanfics out there, some brilliant, some awful. Most has lots of sex in it. Pulling fanfic to publish it is controversial because it started life based on someone else's original work and also it can endanger other fanfic writers by drawing legal attention to the genre.
Anyway as far as I can tell fifty shades was good in parts but not the best fic out there, so to spend £60 on it just because it's hot fiction would be a bit silly. If you are interested in grown up writing you can enjoy for free then come to the TSA thread in adult fiction and give us a wave!

BoFo · 12/03/2012 08:27

I downloaded it to my kindle last week. Think it cost about £6. Haven't read much yet, just two chapters. I heard it was rude but so far it's seems very tame and teen- ish'.

LyssaM · 12/03/2012 09:04

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight - thanks! I may wander over indeed! I have never read fan fiction, but I want to learn to write and I thought that may be a good way of learning. And it does sound fun.

And it would nice to read something a bit more varied.

RebeccaMumsnet · 12/03/2012 12:21

Hi there,

We have moved this thread to Adult fiction.

I just read a review of Fifty shades, and was thinking about buying it. Then strayed on here. What, I ask you, is TSA?

I'm wracking my brain, but just can't work it out. Can someone put me out of my misery?

PenguindreamsofDraco · 12/03/2012 14:54

TwiSluts Anonymous, Whimsical. We started as a motley group of grown women embarrassed by rather enjoying the Twilight books and wanting to spread Robert Pattinson on a cracker. We have since mutated into a group of grown women who sneer at the Twilight books, will letch over anything male, have read many hundreds of Twilight-inspired fanfiction stories, most of which surpass the originals in filth if nothing else and are currently fixated on slash fiction inspired by Harry Potter.

Oh and don't buy Fifty Shades - come and be introduce yourself on our thread and there are a couple of us who have the original MOTU who might be prepared to wing it your way Grin

whimsicalname · 12/03/2012 15:00

MOTU?

I live on a TTC thread, and am bemused by your modern language!

PenguindreamsofDraco · 12/03/2012 15:06

Master of the Universe - as Obsidian said upthread, this was its original fanfiction name.

whimsicalname · 12/03/2012 15:12

Ah, i see. I'm not sure I'm much the wiser though. Is it still Twilighty or has it been changed? The review I read said nothing about all this! I feel like I've fallen into a parallel dimension of things I know nothing about.

Still, it might be fun for book club...

Thanks Penguin, and sorry for highjacking your thread Sunshine.

PenguindreamsofDraco · 12/03/2012 15:50

No, it had/has nothing whatsoever to do with Twilight except all the characters' names and physical characteristics were the same.

The idea of reading it in book club makes me Grin

EightiesChick · 12/03/2012 23:48

Confused: how is it fanfiction if it has nothing to do with Twilight / isn't set in the same fictional world / doesn't feature any of the characters? Can anyone explain? I'm not very up on what qualifies as fanfiction but the above was what I assumed.

SardineJam · 13/03/2012 00:00

I think it has been overhyped A LOT! I read the first of the three, downloaded on my kindle, and call me cynical but it seems so silly and far fetched

Yes it is pretty much a BDSM book but badly written and almost predictable

It ends on a cliff hangar so you 'need' to buy the next in the series. I downloaded a sample of the next one, and its just more of the same dross - if it wasnt for the heavily discounted kindle rates, I wouldn't have bought it and wont buy the next two installments

BitchyNoMore · 13/03/2012 00:04

Fanfiction is where the original fiction is used as a prompt for writing, some fanfiction is more linked to the original then others. HP fiction tends to be closer to the original, some twific is closer to the original twilight then others. With the twilight world there is fic where the werwolves/vampires play a large role, where are others where there is none of that and the closest similarity is the character names/personality traits/interactions between the characters. Some ie better written then others. The fanfiction world is a weird interesting place and there are a lot of very different types of fanfic startreck, buffy, etc. You name it you could probably find it.

hth.

mumof4sons · 18/03/2012 11:24

If you want a deep meaningful read that will change the way you feel about the world or change your life (although it might change your sex life), this isn't for you.

But, if you want a bit of escapism from the drudgery of everyday life - the cooking, cleaning, laundry, the childrearing - then this might be the book for you. I fall into the latter.

I found it a good read, and quite hot in places. It is far fetched, so what? If you enjoy it, so what? It reminded me of my teenage years when my best friend and I used to sneak out her mum's Harold Robbins books just to read the racy, sexy bits.

I have learned something from the book - sex really can be fun. I found out that I have led quite a sheltered life and there is more than just the missionary position and blow jobs. I'm almost 47 years old and have definitely been missing out on some things. The next time I see my 'man' he is definitely in for a treat.

The third book comes out tomorrow on Kindle and I will be reading it holding Kindle in one hand and my rabbit in the other. (The 'man' is away on business for a couple of weeks.)

MySunshineInGreySkies · 18/03/2012 18:52

I've downloaded it, going to give it a go, quite fancy some hot escapism!

Is there another book like this trilogy out there ?? I've read all 3, loved them ( I am aware that amounts to a dark secret that should not be shared :)) but I'm desperate for another set of books like it pretty please :)))
