Supposedly, it's a brilliant novel, anyone read it?

OP posts:
cocolepew · 25/04/2012 21:48

I got this on Kindle for about £3. £3 too much. If I knew it was fanfiction first I would never have got it

I can't get past the first few chapters.

It's pants.

LowFlyingBirds · 25/04/2012 21:54

It is utter, utter bilge.

Lacking in any subtetly, depth, style... I imagine this is what Mills and Boon books are like.

You might like it, some seem to...as winnybella said (far more diplomatically than i want to) they are probably not the most discerning of readers.

Conflugenglugen · 25/04/2012 21:56

It was awful!!! Just awful. So poorly written, from a technical standpoint. Product placement felt like a sledgehammer. And the sex? Pfft! Far more vanilla than its marketing would suggest. I've come closer to orgasm reading D H Lawrence. Grin

LowFlyingBirds · 25/04/2012 21:57

Mu of4sons-TMI dear, TMI.

Conflugenglugen · 25/04/2012 21:58

And that is not to denigrate D H Lawrence, btw. He knew how to write erotically, imo.

GrossePopel · 25/04/2012 22:02

Exactly what cocolepew said.

It's utter drivel. I've never read Mills and Boon but I reckon they're very similar.

squeakytoy · 30/04/2012 22:19

I actually quite liked it... and am on the second book now, Fifty Shades Darker.. which is also reasonable too..

The fact that they are 2 for £7 in sainsburys also helped!

mad4 · 08/05/2012 10:37

I read the first half of fifty shades last night, my DH thinks is fabulous Blush it may be total trash and poorly written but im not a high brow reader so im loving it!
after a very tough year between me and DH last year, reading the Twilight series awakeded something in me that went to sleep after DD was born, and im not ashamed to say that i think discovering this genre of fiction has saved my marriage from a pretty dark place.

looking forward to DD's lunchtime nap today so i can seduce DH see what happens next Grin

AlmostMrsRobinson · 08/05/2012 14:54

Read all 3 50shades books and quite enjoyed them Blush Although I do admit they are not the best written books I have ever read.

Dont suppose anyone has MoTU they could mail me? Pretty please?

Checkmate · 08/05/2012 18:24

Anyone who wants PDF of motu1 (fsog, fsd) or motu2 (fsf) then pm me an email address. They're pretty rubbish, kind of alright to read for free, but not worth paying for. So happy to oblige with the free versions!

theonewiththenoisychild · 08/05/2012 18:47

I havent paid for these books ive reserved them at the library so will haveto ring them tomorrow to check if they have them dp loves it when i read filth these types of books Blush

mistymoo25 · 17/05/2012 15:23

I seem to be amongst the few on here who have actually enjoyed it, which I think is quite surprising. I've read all 3 and have just picked the first one back up to start reading it all over again. I am amazed that people are calling it drivel, bilge and awful. I have read an lot of different types of books and styles of writing in my time, and I really don't see the problem with it. I completely fell in love with Christian Grey (sorry, Mr Grey, Sir!!) and have been absolutely glued to them all since they arrived in the post. I must admit to having made a few saucy purchases off the back of these books too, which DH is more than happy with Shock Blush!!!
Anyway, I've been dying to talk to someone about these books, and have just bought them for my sister. Fingers crossed she will agree with me, and not the other 95% of the population Grin.

SilverMachine · 17/05/2012 19:40

I am about halfway through the first book and I love it Blush It's not the best written book ever but it is pure escapism, I can't put it down. That said, I haven't actually read Twilight, i'm not sure if that would maybe affect my opinion of the book.

Ironically, I avoided Twilight as I thought it sounded trashy Blush

harryandlily · 18/05/2012 12:52

I started reading this last night. Took a while for it to get started and is rather farfetched but it's an easy read. Doesn't take much concentration at all.

PerplexedPetunia · 19/05/2012 04:20

A brilliant novel it is not, a fantastic read? Absolutely!

Is Fifty Shades of Grey any different to Master of the Universe?

Moln · 19/05/2012 04:45

what is it about fan fiction and sex? i know someone how writes it (Harry Potter mostly) and all her stuff is awash with sex (usually naughty stuff and if it's not kinky sex it'll be mind blowingly amazing sex). Her actually writing is school girl stndard and not publishing standard

so if 50 shades of grey is similar I'd hazrd a guess the writing shit but if you wan to read about sex and fell a bit rauncy afterwards it'll be the book for you. Suppose it's like Black Lace books (does Mills an Boom have sex scenes in them beyound bare rippling chests and sighs?)

PercyFilth · 19/05/2012 12:34

I had a flick through a copy in Tesco yesterday. Seems to be just wankfodder.

PorkyandBess · 20/05/2012 11:19

I bought this because I kept seeing it on best seller lists. Now I am completely incredulous that in the Times yesterday, I saw the 3 'Grey' books are at positions 1,2 and 3.

It is the biggest pile of shite I have ever read. To say it is badly written does not do it justice. I got so bored I started speed scanning/flicking through it by about 1/2 way.

If anyone wants my copy they can have it. Please don't waste money on it.

I just can't get over how badly conceived/written it is.

MadameMessy · 20/05/2012 11:28

I liked them Blush
I like ff though.

To those who thought it was crap, what would you reccommend instead?

Grockle · 20/05/2012 11:40

I have all three books as PDFs if anyone wants them. Am happy to email. I only read the first one and it was awful.

mistymoo25 · 21/05/2012 15:16

Moln - your writing isn't that great, so be careful who you criticise.

These books have NOTHING to do with Twilight regardless of how they may have started off. If you are after pure escapism and a good helping of romance, please do not dismiss these books before you give them a go - and please read them with an open mind, after all, it's just a story!!

For all the people saying how awful the books are, what were you expecting them to be like? Were you after rampant s+m on every page???? So what if they are a bit repetitive every time Ana swoons over the way Christian's jeans hang off his hips? She was a virgin and he is the first guy she has ever been in love with. Are you telling me that no-one on here was ever affected by their first love in the same way? Angry

I second MadameMessy's question - what would you all recommend instead?

PorkyandBess · 21/05/2012 21:25

I had absolutely no idea that the book was soft porn! (rather foolish of me)

And with a very unlikely/unsubstantial plot line and ludicrous characters.

But, a good thing is that my dh and I got many laughs as I read bits out to him.

We are still laughing about some of the more popular and repeated ad nauseum lines.

Moln · 22/05/2012 07:04

Meow mistymoo25!

A little sensitve there, do you write fan fiction?

No need to get your knickers in a twist just because other people don't like it or think of it as well written (especially as it generally isn't, and you don't have to be a prized writer to recognise that)

mistymoo25 · 22/05/2012 13:03

Knickers definitely not twisted, I'm simply standing up for a book which I thoroughly enjoyed, in just the same way as those who didn't like it are being very vocal in their opinions. And no, I do not write fan fiction.

Each to their own Wink

plantarflexion · 24/05/2012 14:06

I will admit that I am also enjoying it. DH downloaded it to the Kindle on his Galaxy tablet without really knowing what it was about . We are both reading it ( when I can prise the tablet off him ) and enjoying it .
The writing style is reminiscent of Judy Blume , so if you were a fan in your youth ( I was ) , then this is familiar stuff .
Well, it would be if Judy Blume wrote about BDSM . I think it is done in reasonable taste , not nasty which I expected it to be. Just saucy , a bit raunchy and a bit silly .
