musttidyup You're sending me TWO books for March?? I've started reading Inheritance and it's big, I'll need to read super fast to get through that and both clun books!

dinkystinkyexpectations · 24/02/2012 11:35

Acsec - no obligation to read both clun books. Just pick the one you like the look of best. The second one is a plug book (I think we have 2 or 3 of those in circulation now) and should be used to plug any holes that open up in the clun if people dont receive a book.

Anyone needing a hole plugged should pop on here to let people know at end of first week of March and appeal for a plug book to be sent to them.

swampster · 24/02/2012 12:18

Not posted yet... still trying to get through the self-pitying twat-man testosterone novella. [sorry Calico] Thanks Wine Brew Biscuit

But...

I have been re-reading some childhood gems and really enjoying them. For the next clun (or a brand new, parallel universe clun), does anyone fancy a childhood favourites theme?

I am thinking along the lines of Nina Bawden's Carrie's War, Joan Aiken's Wolves of Willoughby Chase, E. Nesbit's Five Children and It, T. H. White's Mistress Masham's Repose, Dodi Smith's I Capture The Castle, Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time... [endless list emoticon]

dinkystinkyexpectations · 24/02/2012 12:26

Swampy - you've had a hard time of it with books of late. Wait till you get the one I sent to Tilly as a plug book - you'll find that very non-taxing on the brain, I promise.

Love the idea of revisiting childhood gems - I often re-read my favourite Dianna Wynne Jones books when times are bleak...

swampster · 24/02/2012 13:07

Dear dinky,

Nothing is untaxing on my brain!

swampster · 24/02/2012 13:09

I haven't read any Diana Wynne Jones. just googled, I think I have been deprived :(

I am currently re-reading Barbara Willard's Mantlemass books. They are sooooooo brilliant. Can't believe they are out of print.

dinkystinkyexpectations · 24/02/2012 14:34

Ooh not read Mantlemass! Just think of the joy of Ms Wynne Jones you have ahead of you. I'd start with fire and hemlock or Howl's moving castle on your kindle if I were you Swampy...

musttidyupmusttidyup · 24/02/2012 18:51

swampy you really need to stop beating around the bush and tell us how you really feel about the books Wink

musttidyupmusttidyup · 24/02/2012 18:53

does anyone fancy a childhood favourites theme?
Twins at St. Claire's anyone? Grin

swampster · 24/02/2012 19:50

MTU! Grin

I loved Claudine at St. Clare's so much I wanted to go to boarding school. Then I went to boarding school and life as I knew it Ended For Ever. St. Clare's has A Lot to answer for!

tillyfernackerpants · 24/02/2012 20:45

I was always a Mallory Towers girl myself - I totally saw myself as Daryl Grin

Then became a Nancy Drew girl!

dinkystinkyexpectations · 24/02/2012 21:26

See I was a day student at a boarding school and never read St Clares and only one Mallory Towers - just didnt appeal. Lord of the Rings was a good bit of escapism though...

swampster · 24/02/2012 22:32

I always confused Mallory Towers and St. Clare's. Then The Chalet School was the same again but in Yoorope.

acsec · 25/02/2012 00:14

I loved Mallory Towers then went on to Nancy Drew, too - brilliant!

I would like to part of a childhood favourites clun, I studied Children's Literature as one of my uni modules.

kiwijesta · 25/02/2012 07:30

Loving this old school discussion! Last year after I had DD and was trying to get back into books I read a couple of Famous Fives and some of the Anne of Green Gables series. These two (Anne in particular) were the books of my youf!

And now for a confession, and I blame this on the fact that I'm from NZ, but I never read Mallory Towers, Chalet School, or the St Clare as a kid, but .... I did read them in 2005 while on holiday at my inlaws (who are English living in NZ) Blush and .... I re-read the Mallory towers and a few CS's and FF's while back there in Jan, they make a great beach read, just have to be careful they don't fall apart due to their age!

Haribojoe · 25/02/2012 09:02

Loved mallory towers, my mum got me into them as a child, am hoping to do the same for my god daughter one day. Unless DC4 is a girl! Grin

dinkystinkyexpectations · 25/02/2012 17:26

I read Anne of Green Gables and a few of the sequels but Anne was my favourite. Have a huge Famous Five boxset to read to DS1 (£5 from book sale I went to - bargain!) when we finish the Roald Dahl box set we're working our way through (only 4 books to go) - used to love those and other Enid Blytons when pretty young (Magic Faraway Tree, Wishing Chair ring any bells?) - so really looking forward to it.

Calico1 · 27/02/2012 09:56

Swampy Angry

I've got two books at the mo, Haribo's and an extra one from Kiwijesta. I've nearly finished reading Haribo's book (weird but good) but will hang onto the other one in case nothing arrives from clinging in March.

Calico1 · 27/02/2012 11:53

Never read Malory Towers or any Diana Wynne Jones, but loved the Magic Faraway Tree, The Peppermint Pig and Wolves of Willoughby Chase... can't wait until DD is old enough to read those.

Haribojoe · 27/02/2012 12:05

kiwi am I posting to you this month or Rufus? Smile

swampster · 27/02/2012 14:52

Thanks (((((Calico))))) Thanks

Grin
kiwijesta · 27/02/2012 17:29

Haribojoe unless your book arrived today I'd say you're posting to rufus lol. I'm going to post mine tomorrow Smile to clinging

Haribojoe · 28/02/2012 10:38

Thanks kiwi will post to Rufus on Thursday, despite my vows to be super keen am on a study day tomorrow so can't get to post office Grin

AfternoonsAndCoffeespoons · 28/02/2012 11:25

Nearly finished my book and am on track to post it on time this month!! Received my next one from Acsec already, too. Will be back on Thursday to report!

dinkystinkyexpectations · 01/03/2012 10:35

Wotcha clunettes. Hope you're all giving honorary Fat Controller acsec a nice easy ride. Dont forget to post today to report on the last book (or books) you read - I had THE TOME from MTU this time round. Not my usual reading material but easily readable - though like Swampy I found myself wishing for a lot of the characters to die, die, die which probably wasnt what the author was aiming for...
