i read inconcievable last week, didnt really enjoy it. It was clever but I didnt like either character but I suppose that could have been the point.

Astonishing Splashes of Colour, have had it for ages, bought it because of reviews on here, was put off reading it because of later reviews here but currently thoroughly enjoying it. It is beautifully written, can see why it was nominated for a Booker.

mummylonglegs · 09/10/2005 23:18

The glass house - Sophie Cook.

MrsSpoon · 09/10/2005 23:24

mummylonglegs, I went to School with Sophie. What do you think of the book?

jennifersofia · 10/10/2005 00:03

Inching my way through 'Wives and Daughters' by Mrs. Gaskell, also really enjoying 'The Mouse and his Child' by Russell Hoban which is fantastic. Anyone else read it? I am very excited to read it to my DDs but that won't be for another 3 years or so...

100 years of solitude,

Just finished Long Way Down by Nick Hornby. Very disappointed. Irritating characters and not even one smile. I know suicide is not supposed to be a humourous topic, but still..

Blandmum · 10/10/2005 07:12

I am reading the new Alan Bennet and it is superb.

ChaCha · 10/10/2005 10:32

Mary Reilly by Valerie Martin. Have just finished Property which I thought was great.

I'm in between novels. I'm reading a volume of poetry by Seamus Heaney called "Seeing Things". Also reading a book about Al-Qaeda by Jason Burke.

cardy · 10/10/2005 11:02

Just finished Notes on a Scandel by Zoe Heller and looking for something equally as good. Any suggestions?

Lmccrean · 10/10/2005 11:05

Lucy Sullivan is getting married (marian keyes) East of Eden (cant remember author) and a montessori at home book.

suzywong · 10/10/2005 11:07

Notes on a Scandal was good wasn't it, why not try Case Histories, by Kate Atkinson

binkie · 10/10/2005 11:09

EH Nesbit's The Treasure-Seekers, latest Granta, an Agatha Christie compendium that appeared from somewhere, Morte d'Arthur (in modernised spelling, which feels weird) and an elderly LRB. Whichever first slides off the bedside pile.

Diplodocus, I wish I could do serious informative books nowadays - I cheat by reading the LRB essays.

TurQorTreat · 10/10/2005 11:16

The Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys and THe Insider by Piers Morgan.
They're making a film of Notes on a Scandal, can't remember who's in it but I remember thinking they're miles away from my mental picture of the characters.

tiredemma · 10/10/2005 11:18
