I am surely not the only one on Mumsnet?

I've just finished the newest Tiffany Aching one. It wasn't on a par with his best, but I loved parts of it. It made me realise what a huge fan of women TP is; strong women abound in his books. I shall look forward to encouraging my daughter to read them.

Here's a question: in your head, who plays the characters in the books? I recently realised that my Granny Weatherwax is played by Maggie Smith (in my head, I'm not sure if a film would really be a good idea).

I think Stephanie Cole is too old for Sybil Vimes - I mean, she's supposed to be vaguely of childbearing age after all. Robbie Coltrane as the Dean - second that. I'm still trying to picture who would be Vimes - I know Paul Darrow (Avon in Blake's 7) used to play him on stage and actually I can see that, but he'd be on the venerable side now too...

crumpet · 11/01/2011 20:33

Yes, Stephanie Cole as Granny Weatherwax would be good. Helena Bonham Carter definitely has Magrat's hair, too, and Miriam Margolyes for Nanny Ogg.

Who is Cut-me-Own-Throat Dibbler, though?

pointythings · 11/01/2011 21:15

Oh Crumpet, CMOT Dibbler would have been perfect for Pete Postlethwaite, alas.

piprabbit · 11/01/2011 22:52

I think that CMOT Dibbler is more along the lines of James Corden.

Fenugreek · 12/01/2011 12:35

Am I the only one who thinks Stephanie Cole is entirely wrong for Granny Weatherwax?

Snorbs · 12/01/2011 21:13

How so Fenugreek? Wrong look? Wrong voice?

Fenugreek · 13/01/2011 03:36

She is too homey and complete. Granny has an uncontrolled, raw edge to her. Granny's demons sit on her shoulder all the time. Stephanie Cole is too... smug? Well, if not smug then too sure of herself. I know Granny is completely sure of herself too, but that comes from the knowledge that if she stops being so tightly in control the whole time she is only a knife edge away from cackling. Or never coming home to her own head.

I love Granny.

thumbwitch · 13/01/2011 03:57

I agree with you, Fenugreek. Granny Weatherwax is a bony old woman, Stephanie Cole isn't bony. I would like to see her played by Emma Thompson's mum, Phyllida Law. Or Eleanor Bron - she'd be good.

I was thinking Miriam Margolyes for Nannie Ogg for sure - or possibly Imelda Staunton, if you can wipe out the Harry Potter memories.
HBC is far too good looking to be Magrat IMO. Who would I have for her... oo, I don't know!!

David Jason as Rincewind = wrong. Love the idea of Rhys Ifans doing him though! He did a good job, mind - but he wasn't the right shape.

The only Discworld book I wasn't that keen on was Jingo - I got the impression that he was churning too many out at that point and was quite relieved that he slowed down again and, to me, the quality picked up again. The first 4 improve but he doesn't really get into his style stride until the 5th book, I don't think. Equal Rites was the one that got me hooked - the first two grated slightly, style-wise.

Granny Weatherwax is definitely my favourite character. Although I have a sneaking fondness for the Luggage.

I have met TP - I was at the first DiscWorld conferenc in 1996 - it was Interesting. I went with friends - we discussed whether or not it would be full of Trekkie style people and came to the conclusion that everyone we knew who read TP wasn't a trekkie so we'd be all right - but we found them all at the Conference! It was still fun, and I love the photo we have at the Masquerade Ball with TP.

lavenderbongo · 13/01/2011 04:23

I love Pratchett - i am a huge fan and have read them all loads of times.
Vimes and Granny are my favourite characters and Thud, Monstrous Regiment and Guards Guards all made me laugh and cry.

I would like to second the vote for Rob Brydon as Rincewind.

weegiemum · 13/01/2011 04:39

I try to live my life by an axiom found in "Men At Arms"

"It is better to light a flamethrower than to curse the darkness"

Fenugreek · 13/01/2011 04:51

Actually, Rob Brydon as Rincewind is genius. Yes.

stumpweasel · 18/01/2011 19:06

Am another huge TP fan - have all the Discworld books. Especially love the Witches and Death (Equal Rites & Hogfather being among my favourites). Never been a huge fan of Rincewind tho.

Some inspired casting ideas out there - have pillaged the suggestions and here's my line up:
Noel Fielding as Otto Chriek
Charles Dance as Vetinari (Alan Rickman's a good villain, but think CD should continue)
Ewan McGregor as Vimes
Joss Ackland as Ridcully
Ruth Jones as Agnes Nitt

What about Catherine Tate as (a less foul mouthed) Nan as Nanny Ogg, though Kathy Burke would be fab too

Quite agree that David Jason, tho a good actor just isn't right as Rincewind

Some budding Casting Directors amongst the Mumsnet ranks methinks.

About to start the latest Tiffany Aching (Xmas pressie from DH)

goinggoinggoth · 18/01/2011 20:20

Have only skimmed read, but how about Shelia Hancock for Granny Weatherwax? She's got the 'sucked lemon' look.

I love DW and regularly work my way through them. Especially the Guards books, Sam Vimes gets better in every book, and I do see Pete Postlewaite when I read him. Nightwatch is my favourite book.

SeriouslyOutnumbered · 18/01/2011 22:17

I'm also a big fan and started off whilst at uni with Men at Arms - I have a huge soft spot for Carrot and Angua as a result. I get the new book every year for my birthday (which is at the end of Sept) and between us DH and I have them all.

I agree with Bill Nighy for Mr Slant and Rhys Ifans would make a great Rincewind :) Sybil Vimes is a kind of blonde Ruth Jones in my head and the Patrician a bit like that bloke who played the Master in the older Dr Who episodes, though Charles Dance would definitely work. DH has just walked in and suggests Robert de Niro for Vimes...

piprabbit · 18/01/2011 22:27

going you may be on to something, suggesting Sheila Hancock - I'm off to google and have a think...

Ray Winston for Vimes anyone??
