I am surely not the only one on Mumsnet?

I've just finished the newest Tiffany Aching one. It wasn't on a par with his best, but I loved parts of it. It made me realise what a huge fan of women TP is; strong women abound in his books. I shall look forward to encouraging my daughter to read them.

Here's a question: in your head, who plays the characters in the books? I recently realised that my Granny Weatherwax is played by Maggie Smith (in my head, I'm not sure if a film would really be a good idea).

OP posts:

I love Terry Pratchett, read the books again and again - except for the Rincewind ones, they are meh. He's just so ... annoying.

Maggie Smith would be perfect for Granny Weatherwax. As for Nanny Ogg, I'd want someone round and cheerful looking - someone mentioned Julia McKenzie. Now if I could only imagined her being very saucyWink I think whatshisname who is Dumbledore in Harry Potter would manage Ridcully as well.

The illustrations of Vimes have always crashed completely with the picture I have of him. On the book covers, he looks like he's seventy (and in a very bad mood). In my mind he's much more bulky - like a Bruce Willis or Woody Harrelson gone slightly to seed.

I love Susan, but I don't think whoever played her in Hogfather matched my image of her. Don't know who would, though. They would have to give a very strict impression. Maybe young Maggie SmithGrin? I love all the no-nonsense women in Discworld - Granny, Nanny, Tiffany, Susan... It is my secret sorrow that I in no way could live up to them. Sigh.

I now find that I could go on like this for hours, but I'll stop nowBlush

And I wanted a Discworld name when I was looking for a new one the other day, but I remembered that there were a few around, so I didn't want to make it seem as if I was impersonating anyone. Except Discworld characters, that isHmm

Umami · 08/01/2011 09:36

No, I like Brian Blessed for Ridcully.

What about Clint Eastwood for Vimes?

And please please please Antonio Banderas for Greebo-as-a -man!

Snorbs · 08/01/2011 10:45

I'd have thought Brian Blessed would be better as the Dean rather than Ridcully. Jim Broadbent as the Bursar?

A young Clint would do brilliantly as Vimes. Or, for a real giggle, how about Philip Glennister? Grin

Another thought for a young Magrat - how about Evanna Lynch, the actress who plays Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter films?

Here's a question though. Melyn Hayes: Nobby or CMOT Dibbler?

Snorbs · 08/01/2011 10:54

Actually, on second thoughts, you're right - Brian Blessed as Ridcully. You'd need someone with a very good pair of lungs to bellow "BurSAAARRR!!!!"

FelicityParpworth · 08/01/2011 11:05

OH I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE discworld books.

My favs are guards, guards and reaperman of the older ones. I've just read The Fifth Elephant for the second time and am loving Vimes so much I'm read Night Watch now Blush Smile

Also, I love the witches, Lords and Ladies is fantastic. Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg are genius.

Oh it's so lovely to find other TP geeks Wink - none of my friends read him.
I'm ashamed to say I haven't read any of the Tiffany Aching ones. I read some of the kids ones years ago and didn't really enjoy them (diggers) but think I'll have another go. Haven't read Nation either. I'm off to amazon now.

FelicityParpworth · 08/01/2011 11:07

Oh and I forgot to say, also LOVE the university, the librarian, the dried frog popping bursar - is it reaper man where little creatures appear in the air when someone swears? Superb.
That TP, such a GENIUS, has alzeimers is an absolute tragedy.

FelicityParpworth · 08/01/2011 11:15

Is the wee free men the first Tiffany Aching book?

MyBrainIsOutOfTune · 08/01/2011 11:22

FelicityParpworth Yes, it's the first.

FelicityParpworth · 08/01/2011 11:34

Thanks Smile

EsmeWeatherwax · 08/01/2011 13:25

Brian Blessed, genius idea for Ridcully!

weblette · 08/01/2011 13:36

There's got to be a role for Bill Nighy somewhere, Timothy Spall too.
Inspired by some of the earlier posts I started Thief of Time again last night, Good Omens is next up.

ScatterChasse · 08/01/2011 15:49

Timothy Spall, hmm, with stitches as an Igor?

And you're right about Bill Nighy, he'd be just right for somebody, not sure who though.

Umami I thought of Antonio Banderas for Reacher Gilt in Going Postal.

aurorastargazer · 08/01/2011 16:27

umami - i agree with you about antonio banderas as greebo, i had the same thought wheni last read a tp book with greebo in. granny weatherwax does seem to suit maggie smith, not sure who gytha ogg could be Hmm

Umami · 08/01/2011 17:30

I was pleasantly surprised by David Suchet as Reacher Gilt.

Is Bill Nighy too young for Cohen? Grin

Timothy Spall would be great as Igor!

Now come on, we need Colon, Carrot, Nobby and Angua.

weblette · 08/01/2011 17:32

Hmm I'm thinking Eileen Atkins in her Cranford mode for Weatherwax, Eric Sykes would be great as Fred Colon. Banderas for Greebo, yes please grrrrrrrrr. Reacher Gilt, hmmm. Not sure. Who the heck would you get to play Carrot?

weblette · 08/01/2011 17:32

Nobby, how about Tony Robinson

Snorbs · 08/01/2011 17:33

Bill Nighy could do a great Mr Slant.

Not least because he's had previous experience of playing a zombie in Shaun of the Dead Grin

weblette · 08/01/2011 17:35

Oh yes, he'd be great Grin
Imelda Staunton as Littlebottom?

ScatterChasse · 08/01/2011 17:58

Funny, she's always how I picture Mrs Cake! Probably because her character's bossy in Harry Potter.

Snorbs · 08/01/2011 20:57

I tell you who else could do a good Granny Weatherwax - Stephanie Cole. Just imagine her in a big black hat.

As for Colon, how about Robbie Coltrane?

madhattershouse · 09/01/2011 02:35

Carrot...David Beckham...muscular, tall....but little slow on the uptake! Forgive me..have just spent 3 hours watching going postal. Should nave been in be hours ago, what an embuggerace!! Grin

Caboodle · 09/01/2011 13:58

I always thought Carrot probably wasn't slow on the uptake, just pretended to be when necessary. David Beckham, not so sure his still waters run as deep Grin. DB looks the part though.

Snorbs · 09/01/2011 14:46

For Carrot, how about Jake Gyllenhaal?

FelicityParpworth · 09/01/2011 17:01

yy weblette - there is something of the Baldrick about Nobby
