I am surely not the only one on Mumsnet?

I've just finished the newest Tiffany Aching one. It wasn't on a par with his best, but I loved parts of it. It made me realise what a huge fan of women TP is; strong women abound in his books. I shall look forward to encouraging my daughter to read them.

Here's a question: in your head, who plays the characters in the books? I recently realised that my Granny Weatherwax is played by Maggie Smith (in my head, I'm not sure if a film would really be a good idea).

I've just watched going postal. Brilliant! Absolutely loved it. The only bum note was Ridcully. He was okaaaay but he wasn't MY Ridcully.

I would suggest mackenzie crooke for Nobby.

And how about Mathew McConasomething for Carrot? Or, ooh, um, that chap I like. George of the jungle. And The Mummy. Oh wossisname?

I think my Magrat must be different to everyone elses because I have her as a younger Helena Bonham Carter.

I think Mackenzie Crooke is at least two feet too tall for Nobby. Isn't he supposed to carry around a letter from the Patrician to prove he's human rather than dwarf (or anything else)?

I think you're thinking of Brendan Fraser. He's got the right physique but he's way too self-satisfied for Carrot.

Umami · 09/01/2011 21:22

Oh yes yes yes to Matthew McConahunnahunnahunna for Carrot! Genius!

piprabbit · 09/01/2011 22:13

I'd prefer Toby Stephens for Carrot, much more regal.

droves · 09/01/2011 22:55

Just read Wintersmith today ..... Grin

Dh kept giving me funny looks ,as i kept laughing out loud . ( He was trying to watch snooker hahaha)

Need "i shall wear midnight ".

GrimmaTheNome · 09/01/2011 23:04

My DD still likes me to read to her but having finished all the Anne of Green Gables and Swallows and Amazons announced there was nothing left (that she didn't want to read for herself). So I got to choose, started on the Wee Free Men tonight. My one complaint of TP is that his chapters are far too long!

GrimmaTheNome · 09/01/2011 23:07

Snorbs, yes Stephanie Cole is more like my idea of Granny Weatherwax.

How about Pam Ferris for Nanny Ogg?

Umami · 10/01/2011 06:56

Yes, that works for me! Grin

Stephanie Cole would be fab. Pam Ferris is more like my image of Mrs Cake!

CMOTdibbler · 10/01/2011 10:09

I wonder about Ruth Jones for nanny Ogg ? Bet she could get the filth level right !

piprabbit · 10/01/2011 10:10

Stephanie Cole is an inspired choice for Granny Weatherwax.

I'm toying with the idea of Catherine Tate for Susan, she'd be good at the moments Susan takes on Death's role.

Wondering about Bill Nighy being Ponder Stibbons.

I think Vetinari might be Ralph Fiennes.

piprabbit · 10/01/2011 10:13

How about Rob Brydon for Rincewind?

piprabbit · 10/01/2011 10:17

And Kathy Burke for Nanny Ogg?

(Can you tell I've been thinking about this Grin).

UniS · 10/01/2011 19:38

Another fan over here. I'm sat typing this on Vimes, the net book is Esme and the Mac is Carrot- Yep, a whole network of Discworld named computers.

huffythethreadslayer · 10/01/2011 19:41

Rob Brydon would be great as Rincewind. I'd love to see Tim Minchin as Carrot. I know he's Australian, but somehow, that wouldn't get int he way for me.....

huffythethreadslayer · 10/01/2011 19:44

I couldn't see an American in any of these roles. Unless it was Johnny Depp with his mockney, Captain Jack accent, or Robert Downey Jnr with his Sherlock Homes thing going on.

Oooh...how about Martin Freeman for someone (not sure who!?!)

Blatherskite · 10/01/2011 20:19

I love discworld too. Started with Feet of Clay then started again from the beginning.

It's going to be so sad when he can't write anymore Sad

pointythings · 10/01/2011 21:18

I loooove TP, I break my own rules and buy them from Amazon as soon as they come out - spending money on hardcovers, no less...

I second Stephanie Cole as Granny Weatherwax, I actually really liked Charles Dance as Vetinary in Sky's adaptation of Going Postal, much better than Jeremy Irons. And as for Ridcully - Joss Ackland did him in Hogfather and I thought he had just the right level of bonkers-but-incredibly-clever.

I don't know enough about the younger generation of actors to work out Carrot, Angua and so on, I'll leave that to those of you who are more up to date.

And I like the Watch series best, Witches next best, but Unseen Academicals is really good. I've read my DCs the first three TA books (I can do Nac Mac Feegles!) but am taking a break as I think the 4th one is a bit too dark.

Snorbs · 10/01/2011 22:07

Kathy Burke as Nanny Ogg... piprabbit that is a work of utter genius. You can just imagine her cheerfully admitting to being common as muck, couldn't you? Grin

I think Ruth Jones would do better as Perdita Agnes Nitt. She's too young for Nanny Ogg to my mind. Although I note Ruth Jones has slimmed down recently so she might need a bit of padding.

Martin Freeman - Moist Von Lipwig. He's got the right kind of unremarkable face but lots of charm.

Bit obvious maybe, but how about Noel Fielding as Otto Chriek?

I haven't seen any of Sky's adaptations but Charles Dance as Vetinari sounds very good. Either him or Alan Rickman I'd say.

Dawnybabe · 10/01/2011 22:27

I usually get a Discworld for my birthday as they come out around that time. So I do have rather a lot in hardback now, but I still quite like my scruffy old paperbacks that I can read in the the bath without my wrists aching.

I have a signed copy of The Truth. I treasure it.

Vimes is my favourite, definitely. Then Nanny Ogg. I love any woman that smokes a pipe, drinks rum by the pint and after a rather adventurous girlhood has thighs you could crack walnuts with.

I want to be Nanny Ogg when I grow up.

piprabbit · 10/01/2011 23:17

Snorbs Grin and she already has the filthy laugh.

I think you could be right about Martin Freeman for Moist - fading from notice.

Fenugreek · 11/01/2011 03:05

I can see Simon Pegg in the Watch as the religeous one who hands out leaflets. Oh, what's his name? Smite The Unbeliever or something funny like that. But they call him Washpot. Am I getting in a muddle?

Tragically my TP collection is in long term storage.

Oh, aaaand... Simon Pegg's mate as Colon. Umm. Nick Frost.

Fenugreek · 11/01/2011 03:08

Constable Visit-the-Infidel-with-Explanatory-Pamphlets. That's who I meant. Yes. Simon Pegg.

Fenugreek · 11/01/2011 03:17

See, I think Stephanie Cole would be a better Lady Sybil.

Fenugreek · 11/01/2011 10:11

I think clever camera trickery could make Mackenzie Crook appear short enough to be Nobby.

Umami · 11/01/2011 17:51

Actually, you're right about Charles Dance, he was better than Jeremy Irons. I had always thought Jezza was the right bloke for the job, but then he played it quite strangely. Charles Dance was perfect.

Yes! Nick Frost for Colon! Love it. So perhaps we can move Robbie Coltrane to being one of the Wizards. Perhaps he could be The Dean? And I'll definitely second Ruth Jones for Agnes.

I would perhaps go with Martin Freeman for Ponder.
