I am surely not the only one on Mumsnet?

I've just finished the newest Tiffany Aching one. It wasn't on a par with his best, but I loved parts of it. It made me realise what a huge fan of women TP is; strong women abound in his books. I shall look forward to encouraging my daughter to read them.

Here's a question: in your head, who plays the characters in the books? I recently realised that my Granny Weatherwax is played by Maggie Smith (in my head, I'm not sure if a film would really be a good idea).

Did you see the Sky film of Going Postal? I though it was brilliant.

VivaLeBeaver · 07/01/2011 17:45

I do like Discworld but prefer the older ones such as Mort and Guards!Guards!. Not very keen on the Tiffany Aching ones, I read Wintersmith and thought it was rubbish. Then I suppose some of the earlier ones were a bit weaker as well. Moving Pictures wasn't very good either.

Milngavie · 07/01/2011 17:47

Ook! I love the Discworld books.

My favourite is Reaper Man Smile.

I got a copy of 'Where's My Cow' a few Christmas's ago. Grin

ethelina · 07/01/2011 17:49

Oh dear here i am outing myself again. Smile My favourite changes every time I read them but probably agree Guards Guards and Men ar Arms are the best. The early middle ones are a much better read than some of the last few. Making Money in particular is a bit [raspberry]

SacharissaCripslock · 07/01/2011 17:50

I love the Discworld books - you can tell from my name! Grin

I still need to buy his newest one but I'm waiting for it to come down in price a bit.

piprabbit · 07/01/2011 17:51

Just finished reading it too - absolutely sobbed at the end of the book, so lovely.

Some of the bits in the middle were a bit of a stretch, but oh, to have a Preston in my life.

weblette · 07/01/2011 17:52

Love all the Vimes books, Night Watch is probably my favourite. He writes such strong females, it's actually refreshing to read. Susan Sto Helit, Tiffany, the witches, Sybil, Angua - the list is rather long...

IShallWearMidnight · 07/01/2011 17:54

I really enjoyed the latest Tiffany Aching book (look at my recent name chnage Wink) but I've never really managed to get into the adult Discworld books. Loved Truckers/Diggers/Wings and Wee Free Men etc, but where should I start with the Discworld ones?

Calyx · 07/01/2011 17:55

I love them! Got my pic on the new cover (through facebook) and am very chuffed. Haven't read the new one yet but love Tiffany and the Wee Free men Grin. I really liked Going Postal and Making Money :)

YunoYurbubson · 07/01/2011 17:56

The only one I didn't like much was Hogfather.

I love the City Watch books.

And Pyramids and Small Gods were joyous works of unadulterated genius.

Ishallwearmidnight, I'd reccomend reading Equal Rites. It's an early one, you'll get to meet Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and Magrat plus discovering Eskarina's backstory.

piprabbit · 07/01/2011 17:57

I love Hogfather - it's one of my Christmas traditions to reread it in the run up to every Christmas.

YunoYurbubson · 07/01/2011 18:00

Which ones have you tried Midnight?

A lot of people suggest starting with Mort.

Some of the books stand alone (although there are always references to other books and characters) and some books really work best if you have read some of the others first.

If you have enjoyed the Tiffany books why not start with the witches? Witches Abroad is the first I think.

sybilvimes · 07/01/2011 18:00

Ahem.

The Watch ones are by far the best. I really liked some of the middle Witch ones too, Lords and Ladies particularly is good.

sybilvimes · 07/01/2011 18:02

Granny Weatherwax pops up in Equal Rites first I think, Although Wyrd Sisters is the first one with all three witches in it.

VivaLeBeaver · 07/01/2011 18:04

Reaper Man is a fab one to start with, was the first one I read.

I liked the Phantom one, with Agnes at the Opera House, and Carpe Jugulam I think (the one with the naming of the baby at the beginning).

looplou · 07/01/2011 18:10

I'm in love with the older ones Guards Guard being my favoruite as well (if Sam Vimes was real I think I would marry him Blush)
The Sky adaptations are awesome....I read the last Tiffany Aching one on my kindle and although not up to his best was still a good read.
I am waiting for another Moist Von Lipwig book!

Looplou If Sam were real we would all be fighting for him (but I'd win Wink)

Umami · 07/01/2011 18:19

Am just reading I Shall Wear Midnight. I love the Feegles! I've always been a Witches girl, but DH prefers the Watch. We've got all (except the newest) of the abridged audiobooks narrated by Tony Robinson and are gathering unabridged versions one by one.

YY to Maggie Smith as Granny, though I think that may be influenced by the Paul Kidby pictures and the Professor McGonagle effect! Always knew Jeremy Irons was the quintessential Patrician. NOT keen on David Jason as Rincewind though.

YunoYurbubson · 07/01/2011 18:20

So does anyone else like to cast the books with real actors?

If you were making an epic Discworld film who would you get to play your favourite characters?

OP posts:
YunoYurbubson · 07/01/2011 18:22

Noooooo David Jason just isn't Rincewind. Rhys Ifans would make a better Rincewind.
