I am surely not the only one on Mumsnet?

I've just finished the newest Tiffany Aching one. It wasn't on a par with his best, but I loved parts of it. It made me realise what a huge fan of women TP is; strong women abound in his books. I shall look forward to encouraging my daughter to read them.

Here's a question: in your head, who plays the characters in the books? I recently realised that my Granny Weatherwax is played by Maggie Smith (in my head, I'm not sure if a film would really be a good idea).

age and having a name beginning with K before beauty Rusty Grin

sybilvimes · 07/01/2011 20:52

Sam Vimes is mine! Seriously! Look at the name people!

I loved Nation too Yuno. Non of the books are real stinkers although I'm not that keen on the Light Fantastic or The Colour of magic. I think Reaper Man is possibly my ultimate favourite. There's that line in it, something about, 'what can the harvest hope for if not the care of the Reaper man' Possibly my favourite Pratchett line of all time.

ScatterChasse · 07/01/2011 20:52

Which is the one where he goes back in time, and Sybil's in the future, having the baby?

Something to do with lilac I think?

I remember the stories but none of the names!

BCBG · 07/01/2011 20:55

memememememememmememe Grin. Maiden, Mother, Crone, that's me Grin

sybilvimes · 07/01/2011 20:56

Scatter that was Nightwatch I think. I remember it well... Wink

RustyBear · 07/01/2011 21:01

I love Night Watch!

All the little angels rise up, rise up.
All the little angels rise up high!

GrimmaTheNome · 07/01/2011 21:03

I love discworld. Bought them all between 2004 and 2005. I have read them all at least twice a year since then.

I loved monstrous regiment for an easy way to get into the series. For a while the Rincewind ones were my favourite, and before that the witches, but I now prefer the guards. I have never been all that fond of tge death stories, but DB loves them.

Good Omens with Neil Gaiman is also magical.

I'm not good at 'film' characters as I don't know enough famous people, but Alice from vicar of dibley as Magrat is sheer genius.

My DP is a bit Carrot-esque. Rose tinted glasses here probably, but he's a similar shape, has red hair and I think he's rather gorgeous. DP doesn't have the charisma of Carrot though, obviously

GrimmaTheNome · 07/01/2011 21:19

I started with the Colour of Magic in about 91 and then read them all sequentially - I do wait for the paperbacks though. Only just got Unseen Academicals, not yet read it so no spoilers please! (also must get Nation sometime)

piprabbit · 07/01/2011 21:27

Getting the hardback is another Christmas tradition Grin, my parents always get the latest for me, I don't even need to ask.

(Although TBH the paperbacks would leave me extra space for more books...)

Snorbs · 07/01/2011 21:29

Another big fan. I bought The Colour of Magic and the Light Fantastic back in, um, 1987 I think and have read them all - many of them quite a few times - since then.

I think my favourites are Hogfather, Maskerade, The Truth and The Thief of Time.

As for who would play whom, I always picture Sybil much the same as Lady Maud from the TV series of Blott on the Landscape. Maggie Smith is definitely Granny Weatherwax - she can do the haughty look so well. As for Nanny Ogg, who else could it be but Julie Walters?

DS has read all the Tiffany Aching books and has started on the rest (he really liked Pyramids) and I've just started reading Truckers to DD Grin

Caboodle · 07/01/2011 21:36

Like them all (inc Tiffany / Good Omens / Nation etc), I want the Feegles as friends and would love to eat pickles with Nanny Grin. Can't choose a favourite, love Granny and Sam equally. Some are not as good as others (thought Soul Music was a bit samey), but I keep and re-read them all regularly.

aurorastargazer · 07/01/2011 21:36

lol me too! there's more of us on here than you realise.

sybilvimes - wishful thinking lol my dp is known as vimes and he's all Wink mine Grin

We're currently ploughing through them in order as bedtime stories for the DC. Eldest is 7, start them early!

When Dh and i got together we disposed of my collection and kept his, mainly because mine was falling apart. I only kept Good Omens and Pyramids!

My fave is Only You Can Save Mankind. I also love the Witches books, and TA too.

We Finished Hogfather just before Christmas. Coincidence???

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 07/01/2011 21:53

Have read most of TP's stuff, wasn't expecting to read I Shall Wear Midnight for a while until I unexpectedly spotted it at the library.

Like piprabbit and reality mention, I was halfway through Nation and in tears for about the third time, thinking, 'this isn't really what I was expecting in a Terry Pratchett book'. Still worth reading though. I think.Hmm

AnnieLobeseder · 07/01/2011 22:10

Aargh, 16 years ago, not 26! No need to make myself more ancient than I am.

As you were.....

piprabbit · 07/01/2011 22:12

I've been reading the Tiffany books to DD at bedtime - but my Feegles accent isn't really up to much.

MadAsASnakeNana · 07/01/2011 22:57

Love them, love them, love them all. After a mastectomy in 2005 - they were the only books I could read for about 6 weeks, made me laugh, cheered me up, took me out of myself.

MrsChemist · 07/01/2011 23:08

Thief of Time is probably my all time favourite Discworld. I love Susan, she's ace (although I'm not keen on The Hogfather)

Agree that Miriam Margoyles would be a good nanny ogg.

I keep starting small gods, reading about 10 pages, putting it down and forgetting about it for so long I have to start again. No idea why though. One day I'll finish it.

droves · 07/01/2011 23:24

i love these books .... i used to read them to th kids when they were little ( as bedtime stories)
.
wyrd sisters , thud and small gods are my favs. Have my eyes on a new copy of feet of clay
...need to get it.Grin

have converted dd3 , she loves thud too especialy Brick.

EsmeWeatherwax · 07/01/2011 23:36

TP and the Discworld have got me through several periods of depression, he's the antidote to life! I've just started downloading them all to my kindle, I can take them all with me wherever i go now!

I like all the character themed books, although I do tend to prefer the wizard and/or Rincewind books. Funnily enough, I was re-reading the Lost Continent the other night, and was wondering who would be better at playing Rincewind than David Jason, could only come up with Billy Connolly, he's got that weasely, cowardly look about him, lol, right down to the scrubby beard!

Despite my MN nickname, I think I could play Agnes Nitt, haha, I'm a dead ringer for her. Shame I can't sing mind. Or act.

Are there not quite a few MNers with Pratchett themed names? I know there's an Angua somewhere...

GrimmaTheNome · 07/01/2011 23:42

I think there was an Angua - haven't noticed her for a while. I think there was a GrannyWeatherwax too, and a Magrat (though she may have been a temporary namechange IIRC). There's certainly a CMOTDibbler .
