Am just finishing The good man Jesus and the scoundrel Christ by Phillip Pullman. Easy to read and very interesting.
What books have other people got their noses in at the moment?

Joanne - I finished Never Let Me Go.

Such a feeling of dread and sorrow reading it, what a wonderful book. I don't think I'll be able to read another book again for a while, as its going to take me a while to stop thinking about this. Are you going to see the film?

Haribojoe · 05/02/2011 19:33

Just finished Room by Emma Donoghue (MN book of the month), really enjoyed it.

Next up is A Crowded Marriage by Catherine Alliott.

comewhinewithme · 05/02/2011 19:47

I am reading Alison Hewitt Is Trapped.
It is a zombie novel and is basically a blog written by a woman who is trapped in her stockroom with workmates.
It is well worth a read if you are into your Zombie novels.

The first part of Paul O'Grady's autobiography At My Mother's Knee (and other low joints).

Am enjoying v much.

purpleknittingmum · 05/02/2011 20:49

I am reading (very slowly!) The Ice Cream Girls by Dorothy Koomson. I have read a few of her books before and enjoyed them

JoanneNotJo · 08/02/2011 11:17

Just finished Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen - didn't enjy it that much to be quite honest - and have started what seems to be a v funny chicklit book that's free in the apple book store called the case of the missing boyfriend.

JoanneNotJo · 09/02/2011 20:09

Well I finished Nick Alexander's Case Of The Missing Boyfriend in record time. A really good book, amazing considering it's free of charge. Made me laugh out loud and cry a bit too, esp at the end. Has anyone else downloaded this? Highly recommended. Very Brigette Jones. Anyway, I'm onto another freebie now - William Walker's First Year Of Marriage.

Haribojoe · 09/02/2011 20:27

Finished A Crowded Marriage, an easy light read but very enjoyable.

Started The Little Green Man by Simon Armitage today, think it's going to be a page turner!

JoanneNotJo · 11/02/2011 13:39

Ooh, I'm not liking W.Ws First Year Of Marriage much. Sort of laddish Birgette Jones really... All right if you want to hear about what men do to avoid drips, but do I?
Seem to have run out of free downloads now. Might actually have to buy something!

wonka · 11/02/2011 13:46

Rule of Four by Ian Caldwell Slow but really enjoying it

Foxinsocks · 11/02/2011 13:49

crack up

it's a thriller but only the second book I've downloaded to read on my phone. Never ever thought in a million years that I would want to read books in online form. Thought I'd always stick to physical books but I am loving reading on my phone and am now reading a vast amount more as I don't have to remember to take the book with me - it's not adding to a huge heavy pile of stuff being taken to work.

I feel all reading envigorated :-)

TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 11/02/2011 13:51

I'm half way through Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. I wanted to read it before seeing the film but it is RUBBISH!

I've just finished American Wife, but can't remember the name of the author Blush. Really enjoyed it though - short stories.

Foxinsocks · 11/02/2011 13:51

have only downloaded the specials first - the ones that were 72p! But if it carries on going well, will look to buy the normal sort of books I'd pick out of a shop soon.

TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 11/02/2011 13:52

This is a great thread as it's giving me ideas as to what to try next. Smile

TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 11/02/2011 13:53

Tafettasplat - I obviously need to keep going! I don't much like the writing style, though - it's like being talked at by an immature 15 year old. Which I suppose it is what it is mean tto be, really.

MayorNaze · 11/02/2011 14:00

just finished engleby by sebastian faulks - v v g

never let me go is an amazing book - you are obv reading it wrong Wink am going to go and see film but with much trepidation...

also recently read this house of brede, by rumer godden, recommended by someone on here (sorry, can't remember who, but thank you :) - interesting book - some bits startlingly brilliant, others oddly disjointed Confused but enjoyed it overall :)

JoanneNotJo · 11/02/2011 15:23

@Foxinsocks - if you have an iphone, look up "the case of the missing boyfriend" in the ebook app. It's free at the moment, and I really enjoyed it. x

JoanneNotJo · 11/02/2011 15:25

@Foxinsocks - you could try "first year of marriage too" as it' free. Didn't like it much, but would be intrigued to know what you think as it seems to be getting good reviews.

Foxinsocks · 11/02/2011 18:41

Thanks Joanne! I will read that next and let you know what I thought!

castlesintheair · 11/02/2011 18:44

I'm reading 'The Help' by Kathryn Stockett and Simon Schama's 'The six wives of Henry VIII'.

littlerach · 11/02/2011 18:56

Mayor, I really enjoyed Engleby.

I am reading "Dear Mr Bigelow", recommended by the librarian. It is a series of letters between the author (Frances Woodsford) and Mr Bigelow, spanning about 10 years in the 1950's, but they never met.
The author lived in Bournemouth which is where i grew up, so am enjoying the references Smile

cloudedyellow · 11/02/2011 19:14

'What to Look for In Winter - A Memoir in Blindness' by Candia McWilliam.
An extraordinary book - honest, sad, annoying, funny and frustrating.

Beamur · 11/02/2011 19:16

Wolf Hall - Hilary Mantel, I bought it for DP for Xmas but he hasn't got round to reading it yet.
I'm not usually that keen on historical/fiction but am really enjoying this.

Foxinsocks · 12/02/2011 17:47

Hey Joanne, am starting first year of marriage.

Finished 'crack up' and 'kill and cure' - both fast paced thrillers, like airport books!

There was something about Engelby I didn't like but can't remember now - I finished though and found it a good read. I enjoyed Week in December and Ordinary Thunderstorms (put both down and came back to them then really enjoyed them).

Fox - I do a fair amount of commuting and travelling for work and find it better to download the books before I go. Having said that, they download very very quickly so can't be that large files. I'm using the kindle as an app on my phone. Also thought I would miss books but I'm not at all!
