Am just finishing The good man Jesus and the scoundrel Christ by Phillip Pullman. Easy to read and very interesting.
What books have other people got their noses in at the moment?

DullWomenHaveImmaculateHomes · 09/01/2011 07:29

Have barely been able to read since DD (8mo) gave up on nice long BF sessions, but DH bought me Maeve Binchy's Return Journey which is a collection of short stories. It's perfect for bedtime - just a few pages and then off to sleep. The stories are brilliant and so easy to read. I know I'll want to read them again very soon.

joshark · 15/01/2011 23:01

hi, i am reading 'the slap' at the moment, it is about an incident at a bbq party where a man hits a child who is not his own, totally amazing and would def recommend x

onimolap · 15/01/2011 23:04

DS has got me reading the Percy Jackson series, and I'm absolutely loving them.

Tabliope · 16/01/2011 15:24

I've just discovered Alexander McCall Smith and have worked through the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series and some of the Isabel Dalhousie ones. Great stuff.

propercrimbo · 16/01/2011 15:29

joshark I read that in summer, it's great, how much do you want to slap the mother of the child, whos name escapes me!?
I am currently reading The Glassblower of Murano by Marina Fiorato, I read another of hers 'The Botticelli Secret' in summer and loved it so thought I'd give this a try, it's very good, would highly recommend either

alisonmeyers · 17/01/2011 09:18

I'm half Way Through "we need to talk About Kevin" which has been suggested so many times on here (I've purposely not read too much discussion on here so that it doesn't spoil the ending, like a few other books I've read in the last few months). It's good so far :)

SerendipityAlways · 17/01/2011 11:03

Have just finished Trespass, Rose Tremain, an enjoyable read.

Now reading "The Help".

Read "Freedom" by Jonathan Franzen over Christmas - highly recommended. Have his earlier book "The Corrections" on order in library.

On bedside locker waiting to be read - Peter Carey's latest "Parrott and Olivier in America" and one of Irene Nemerovskys books. Also want to read "The Twin", also on order in library!

Kally · 17/01/2011 11:50

It's a book that's been around for a while by Babara Kingsolver - The Poisonwood Bible - absolutely amazing. So beautifully written and really can't put it down.

Also read recently The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo trilogy. First book was a bit draggy, but persevered and ended up loving it. They are all excellent reading.

And then there's the Red Tent. My favourite recommend.

unclejim · 17/01/2011 18:39

Ive just read one day by david nicholls its a modern no thrills no mills and boon love story, its one of the only two books that has ever made me cry the other being a thousand splendid suns also definatly worth reading although if your preggers or post preggers and feeling abit delicate i,d leave the latter for another time (as i should have done with the film marley and me ) Smile

SummerRain · 17/01/2011 18:43

For my OU courses:
BSE/vCJD
Life in Amazonia

For myself:
Persian Fire by Tom Holland... tbh I don't normally read historical stuff but it was a Christmas present from a friend and I know he'll ask me about it Blush Would much prefer to be reading a fantasy novel in the very little time I have to myself!

desiretochange · 18/01/2011 16:24

Just finished The Room but better not comment as I see it is being sent out as a book for review on this site and don't want to ruin it for anyone who hasn't read it.

The Lacuna. Doing it for Book Club but I know bar one the others have not enjoyed it. Have only just started it.

We did The Slap a while ago. Universally hated it! We all hated the swearing. Among other things.

Have One Day and The Help and looking forward to reading them. Also The American Wife.

I have about 30 unread books. Never used to happen to me but I have gotten into the very bad habit of taking my iPhone to bed and having a quick look on here and then I spend too long on here and don't end up reading.

shelly101 · 20/01/2011 19:43

Just discovered the author Mo Hayder, already read Gone, now in the middle of Skin. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!:)

JoanneNotJo · 24/01/2011 11:19

I am currently reading Rupert James - Silk. A bit of a romp, but pretty good fun all the same. I also just finished reading my first ever gay chick lit. 50 Reasons to Say Goodbye by Nick Alexander - Dick lit I suppose you could call it.
I mention it because it's free from the amazon kindle store for some reason - so v good value for monye ! if anyone's interested - certainly broadened my horizons and even made me laugh and cry. - Joanne.

JoanneNotJo · 24/01/2011 12:58

Oh, Franzen's Freedom was v v good too.

munstersmum · 24/01/2011 13:04

Three cups of tea by Greg Mortenson. Was a book group choice and not something I would have gone for (as tend to favour fiction) but actually found it quite interesting & restored my faith in the ability of people to achieve things despite systems.

JustAnother · 25/01/2011 18:31

since I got my kindle I am addicted to downloading super cheap books. Last week I read "The Long Reason Why Kayleigh G Loved Baseball", which I paid less than £1 for, and I have really enjoyed it. Off to look for my next bargain now!

brokeoven · 25/01/2011 18:39

Breaking Dawn Stephanie Myer.

Read them all, but picked the first up with much reluctance as this kind of fiction is really not my thing, but really surprisingly enjoyed them all.

Got the new Dawn French for Christmas so looking forward to that.

Turquoise · 25/01/2011 21:17

Shelly101 - I love Mo Hayder's books but I can't say strongly enough, don't read The Treatment. It's utterly brilliant, but the most hauntingly upsetting book about paedophilia I've ever read. The rest are pretty good, except Pig Island IMO.
