Am just finishing The good man Jesus and the scoundrel Christ by Phillip Pullman. Easy to read and very interesting.
What books have other people got their noses in at the moment?

Have finished Silk (Rupert Smith) last night, great fun. Now trying to read something a little more classic: Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen. But I think I enjoyed Silk more... is that shameful?

Ohforfoxsake · 26/01/2011 09:46

If you have a kindle, don't you miss books? I love the bookshop browse, getting them out (always buy 3 for 2) and opening the first page up. It's quite indulgent! (yes, I am easily pleased). Grin

Ohforfoxsake · 26/01/2011 09:48

Oh, also meant to ask, do you have kindles with 3G? Can they be used like a basic iPad?

It's probably another thread - sorry!!

JoanneNotJo · 26/01/2011 11:05

I actually have a kindle and my other half has an ipad. He's in computers and loves anything geeky so... It's silly, but I prefer the kindle when the sun's out. You can't see the ipad that well in the conservatory otherwise. But in bed where I do most of my reading, I like the ipad better. And of course it does everything else too. And no, the kindle isn't 3G - it only does books really. As for missing books - to be honest I don't. I thought I would, but no. I read far more with the kindle because you can download a sample free and see if you like it. And you don't have to plan ahead. you just think, "I want to read someting now, and click..." It's a bit like CDs. I don't miss those either anymore, in fact we don't really have room for them.

Ohforfoxsake · 26/01/2011 12:19

Good point about the CDs! Hadn't thought of it like that. Can you share books on a kindle? Download them on a pc and load onto another kindle?

Sorry for the questions - don't mean to hijack the thread. A 3G kindle in John Lewis caught my eye the other day...

JoanneNotJo · 26/01/2011 13:08

You can register a number of kindle devices and send the books to each of them. I have whatever I'm reading on my kindle, the ipad and also on my phone. Let's me carry on reading at the school gates ;-) As for sharing with other people, no, I don't think you can.

sugared · 27/01/2011 01:42

127 Hours-Don't think i have the stomach for the film, so far so good.

anyone read it/saw the film?

sugared · 27/01/2011 01:43

127 Hours-Danny Boyle.

JustAnother · 27/01/2011 19:02

Thanks, JoanneNotJo. I am to download those now.

Ohforfoxsake, no, I don't miss the paperbacks. I thought I would, but the kindle is just perfect for me, so I am converted. I travel a lot for work, so I can now take whatever book I want with me rather than sticking to the thin ones. I am sure I'll still buy the occasional paper book, but not very often. Plus I love the "sample" that you can download before you buy. So often I have bought books and after the first chapter decided that I didn't want to read any more. It is the end of an era for me.

The 3G works well. I have used the internet via the kindle in a few hotels in Belgium and France in the last month for free. The browser is rubbish, but when you only want to check hotmail and mumsnet, it is good enough. And it is free!

Ohforfoxsake · 28/01/2011 08:52

Thanks Justanother. I have downloaded it on my iPhone so will see how it goes. Like the basic 3G idea - that's all I would use it for anyway!

JoanneNotJo · 28/01/2011 10:12

Ohforfoxsake - it really isn't as nice reading on the iphone as on an ipad or kindle... just so you know!

learobbo · 31/01/2011 15:11

Hi, I am new to mumsnet, finding it very useful :) ... anywho ... i am currently reading The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, i want to watch the film and thought i would much rather read the book first. Before lovely bones i read the twilight saga series and loved it. will be looking for something new to read soon, wouldn't mind another vampire series if anyone can recommend?

I'm on 'Gael Garcia Bernal and the Latin American New Wave' by Jethro Soutar

Also re reading Stuart Maconie's Adventures on the High Teas - in search of Middle England.

Sugared is it Aron Ralston's autobiography that inspired the film. It is a flippin good read

Haribojoe · 31/01/2011 19:55

Am just starting Room for the MN bookclub.

taffetasplat · 31/01/2011 20:01

Read Room a few weeks ago. Also read Sisters by Rosamund Lupton.

Now reading Corduroy Mansions by Alexander McCall Smith, Comfort and Joy by India Knight and about to start Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro.

learobbo · 01/02/2011 09:16

taffetasplat - would you recommend Sisters? it is on my list to read.

Further to my comment above I have also recently read The Curious Incident of the dog in the night time by Mark Haddon.

Haribojoe · 01/02/2011 13:30

taffeta have got corduroy mansions and comfort and joy on my bookshelf, would be interested to hear what you think of them.

taffetasplat · 01/02/2011 13:40

learobbo - yes I would recommend it. Its the kind of book where you get to the end, you need to go back through it, iykwim.

haribo - I'm halfway through CM at the moment. I enjoy the 44 Scotland St series, but as with that, there are some characters I find boring/annoying. In 44 Scotland St, its Big Lou ( and Matthew a bit ) and in CM its Berthea Snark. I am very tempted just to skip the chapters on these people, but thats cheating, hey?
Comfort and Joy I'm 3/4 through. Its a very lite read, isn't it? I wouldn't want to read it on its own as I suspect I'd be dissatisfied with it, but alongside another its working. I have snurked a good few times, I am sure India Knight must be a MNer....

JoanneNotJo · 01/02/2011 13:49

@taffetasplat - Never Let Me Go is fabulous. I loved it.

AvaBanana · 01/02/2011 13:52

Sebastian Faulks, 'A week in December' - about 3/4 of the way through. Very readable.

I am sccchhhkiiiiint at the moment and cannot afford my usual Amazon raids, so am going to join the library tomorrow and see what they've got on offer.

taffetasplat · 01/02/2011 13:57

excellent plan, Ava before this shite government closes them all down

Thats the reason I'm reading Never Let Me Go - it was by the counter in the library when I was getting some Jake Cake books out for DS - highlighted as a why not try something different? book. I will repost Joanne once I've finished it.

phillipad · 02/02/2011 19:53

might seem a little flippant compared to some of the earlier posts, but I've just read Silly Cow by Dawn French and it was a great light read for a change. Recommend it.

sfxmum · 02/02/2011 19:55

just finished The Woman in White just started Case Histories I need light reading this month

mackereltaitai · 02/02/2011 20:01
