How to take back control
Plan when and what you will eat There should be no room for deviation; the idea is to inhibit mindless eating and eliminate your mental tug-of-war. Once you've set new patterns, you can become more flexible.

Practise portion control Eat half your usual meal; see how you feel one and two hours later. A just-right meal will keep away hunger for four hours.( this is my goldilocks principle)

List the foods and situations you can't control Cut out those foods; limit exposure to those situations. If offered something you overeat, push it away. Talk down your urges Learn responses to involuntary thoughts: eating that will only satisfy me temporarily; eating this will make me feel trapped; I'll be happier( and weigh less if* I don't eat this.

Rehearse making the right choices Before entering a restaurant, imagine chosing a dinner that's part of your eating plan. Think of this as a game against a powerful opponent. You won't win every encounter, but with practice you can get a lot better.
WHAT GOOD ADVICE

exercise does help because if you build muscle you can eat more
let's face it we would all like to eat more without getting larger

MamaG · 21/03/2010 08:38

DH's mate told me recently he used to be over 19 stone

He is tall though (over 6') and he said he wasn't fat AT ALL, it was whebn he was "training" (he is a black belt martial arts something or other )

gherkinwithapurplemerkin · 21/03/2010 08:43

Don't swoon MamaG, dh is nearly a black belt in TaeKwonDoe and as far I can tell it is basically kicky line-dancing in pyjamas.

MamaG · 21/03/2010 08:44

LOL

you have just completely burst my bubble there

noddyholder · 21/03/2010 08:44

BariatricObama · 21/03/2010 09:03

in a fit of optimism i tried on my fav summer trews from 2 years ago. they didn't even do up, why did i let this happen sob!

MamaG · 21/03/2010 09:06

keep the faith BO, they will fit by summer

MamaG · 21/03/2010 09:07

I bought some trews at the end of summer last year and put them away

was V pleased as theyu were 2 sizes smaller than I had been

I dread to th ink how far down my l egs they'd get stck

I am determined thery will fit me this summer

gherkinwithapurplemerkin · 21/03/2010 09:13

OK the plan today

just had milkless tea, dry special k and raisins
Lunch - big salad, oatcakes
Dinner - hmmmm could be a prob. roast lamb, tincy bit of mash maybe, cabbage, carrots. But i am having gravy dammit.

Going for quick walk in a min - down to our village - is about 3/4 mi but down a 1:6 hill so a good workout coming back.

HumphreyCobbler · 21/03/2010 09:14

Look forward to trying them on again in three weeks. That's what I do. Keeps me focused.

Today is going to be hard. I was up at four. I am always really hungry when knackered.

gherkinwithapurplemerkin · 21/03/2010 09:14

Big prob though - I did something foolish yest. I bought a Butter Dish. Am thoroughly hoping I can resist Real Butter on thick white slices..

HumphreyCobbler · 21/03/2010 09:16

I am now going too see some friends so the DC can cook pancakes.

Anyone else getting that weird thing when people LOOK at you when you say no thanks to food? I feel compelled to tell them I am dieting for some reason, then feel embarrassed as they all assess my flab.

LetThemEatCake · 21/03/2010 09:17

MamaG I find running i about the only exercise that does work for me with weight loss, esp if i do a few long steady-paced runs a week mixed with a few shorter sessions of interval training.

I'm not grim or anorexicy, honest - but will depart the thread as don't want to anger anyone with inappropriate weight loss goals

LeSingeEstDansLarbre · 21/03/2010 09:20

i'm not feeling any anger, ltec. just concern.

LetThemEatCake · 21/03/2010 09:27

no no sorry, wrong choice of word.
