ElectricElephant · 09/09/2009 12:54

Following on from my other post asking advice on Atkins, I'm going to give it a preoper go now and aim to lose 10lb by the end of September.

Who's with me - Katisha, Eyeballs, anybody else?

I'll start. This time last week I was 14 stone. I'm now 13 stone, 11lb. WOOHOO!

Custy I look forward to the soup!

MistergodthisisSal · 03/11/2009 21:18

Ah no, I have to wait with yoghurt?

Oh don't apologise, I appreciate all the help. Well, I have a rough idea, but have forgotten a bit and would need to read up again. I did similar when I followed Lighter L, except that you had meal replacements 3 times a day, and then one meal (you could chose which one) where you had to do same as Atkins really - and keep to max 20g of carbs a day to stay in ketosis. I have to go and hunt for my ketosis sticks somewhere - I found it strangely fascinating.

I'll try and read up again - that website looks good, but will prob buy India and Nery's book when in next in bookshop, I've seen good reviews. In the meantime, I'm reckoning even if I don't go into ketosis just yet, I'll try and limit my reserves, so easier once I'm doing it properly. Well, and it forces me to keep walking past the chocolate, so even if just for that!

Tortington · 04/11/2009 01:25

you can't eat a couple of slices of [normal] bread on atkins sal! you should set yourself a carb goal for the day.

MistergodthisisSal · 04/11/2009 08:38

Ok, new proper start today! No obv carbs at all, I promise! . Am def going to rely on some of that low-carb bread you mentioned every now and again...

Will buy that book this morning too, might as well do it properly, I guess.

Good luck to everyone else too.

MistergodthisisSal · 04/11/2009 10:46

Have anyone used soy flour in baking before?

I've browsed through recipes, and there seems to be quite a lot that involves baking bread or muffin-y type of things. Most often used ingredients seems to be soy flour and ground almonds. If it tastes horrendous though, I'll leave it, but would be good to have the option to bake something if needed.

Tortington · 04/11/2009 11:48

on the lowcarbmegastore site there is a mix for burger buns - i have it but haven't made it yet.

also have a look at recipes involving ground flax seed or as we brits call it linseed.

i got two packets from julian graves healthfoods, you can make carb free crackers by mixing two table spoons of flaxseed with 2 of water and rolling it out flat and microwaving it for 20 seconds or something - google it.

you can also make flaxseed bread

i have done both, i didn't like it and passd my remaining packet to Katisha, but it's worth a try.

Tortington · 04/11/2009 11:48

the buns are 1 carb each - 1 !!

Tortington · 04/11/2009 11:49

i have the nerys book - bought it new - i think i might have written in it - but if you are willing to wait a few days i would gladly post it to you for free - its just gathering dust.

MistergodthisisSal · 04/11/2009 12:38

Ah, I've just bought a copy, but thank you so much anyway, what a kind offer! I really appreciate it.

I think I'll pop over to health store later this afternoon to see if they've got any "replacement" flours in stock - will try linseed if they have a small packet. I have a faint suspicion I might not like most of it (well, soy) as I hate those soy readymade milkshake things (tried out of curiosity once, not diet). Then again, I was ok with the protein shakes LL had, so maybe I just have to get my head around it being different.

Buns - yay, hot-dogs can be back! Will limit myself to 1, honestly. I love that website - I never knew there were so much "ready" lc stuff out there.

BecauseImWorthIt · 04/11/2009 14:11

India and Nerys also have a cook book out, which is worth getting. Some good recipes that involve 'normal' ingredients, without having to go to all kinds of different health food shops.

MistergodthisisSal · 04/11/2009 15:54

That's good to hear, will keep an eye out. The reviews also look really good - am annoyed with myself for not having looked properly this morning. But hey, I guess I'll stick to plain for these first couple of days anyway, and will prob be cheaper on Amazon / Play etc.

Katisha · 04/11/2009 20:49

Re low carb cook books I would like to say

BecauseImWorthIt · 04/11/2009 20:50

A biscuit, Katisha?! How many carbs are there in that?!!!

Katisha · 04/11/2009 20:51

it is made of linseed therefore none.

MistergodthisisSal · 04/11/2009 21:02

It looks like a (bath) duck to me so pure protein in my books.

MistergodthisisSal · 04/11/2009 21:15

The thing with books - I know you can really get all the info (and more) on the web, but there's just something about books that I really like, and it's nice to flick through on occasion. And I'm a little obsessed with recipe books, so at least a low-carb one is better than me getting bad ideas from my current stash!

I made turnip gratin and grilled lamb chops with small green salad for dinner, which was lovely. Even dh was impressed - think he might like this diet thing!

BecauseImWorthIt · 05/11/2009 21:23

Right. We obviously have to keep mentioning TOTAL full fat yoghurt on this thread! Shiney's thread have just been offered free Total 0% yoghurt by the company!

So go on - how yummy is it with berries for breakfast?

Personally, my favourite is stewed rhubarb with TOTAL FULL FAT YOGHURT and vanilla essence.

8oreighty · 05/11/2009 21:29

I'm in...
have plain full fat yog for early breakfast,
then an omelette around 10...
then try and just have meat and veg at supper...it works like mad, problem is sticking to it.
Have some good low carb slow cooker recipes...

MistergodthisisSal · 05/11/2009 21:37

Oh yes, TOTAL full fat yoghurt is just what I need to stop eating bloody chocolates for desert.

MistergodthisisSal · 05/11/2009 21:38

dessert even. Total full fat yoghurt does not feature high in deserts, I'm sure.

MistergodthisisSal · 05/11/2009 21:42

Free yoghurt aside, I think it's safe to say I'm back at square one. Urgh. I should have thrown them out, as a friend suggested! How is everyone else doing?

Katisha · 05/11/2009 22:30

Actually I do eat Total full fat yoghurt every day for breakfast - I must have spent £££ on it They had it on offer in Tesco for a while but now it's gone back up to over £2 a pot so I am tying to find alternatives.
It is my favourite though. The Tesco "greek-style" is not the same at all, and is higher carb.

I don't know why the fat-free stuff gets pushed so much - low fat is the work of the devil!

Katisha · 06/11/2009 13:52

Custy the soup arrived just as I was thinking about lunch.
I see what you mean - but it isn't that bad...Quite hard to get the lumps out though!
I will eat it all, but yes, I wouldn't go out of way to get any more in.
Thanks again!

Casserole · 06/11/2009 14:16

Hi all

Just to say my local Sainsbos do ground linseed in the "free from" aisle...

Doing ok this week but not quite induction levels, more like OWL levels, so not expecting a huge loss. And I'm on so that always distorts things. But we'll see, when Monday comes round.

My fave meal at the moment is chilli with mince, just a tiny bit of sauce, lots of sour cream and grated cheese and some butternut squash wedges - Tesco have started doing them ready sliced in little packets which is much easier than last time when I nearly took my arm off trying to slice one of the beggers in half!!

MistergodthisisSal · 06/11/2009 17:43

Thanks for the ground linseed tip, Casserole.

I know I should have breakfast, but just couldn't be bothered today. Was starving by lunch, so had two big grilled mushrooms filled with bacon, tomato, chilli, artichoke and cheese. Was lovely.

Saw that Starbucks have Eggnog Latte in store again, and the thought of it is killing me! It's my favourite "coffee" and something I've been living on last Christmas...
