Having always been chunky since I was about 17, now I am really at breaking point. I have started so many healthy eating plans in the past and never get beyond the first week until now.

I don't really want to do a 'diet' as such, just cut down on the calories and excercise sensibly. I don't think I could or (want to) cut any food groups out so so far I have been just making healthier choices. More fruit and veg, not snacking on biscuits/ crisps etc. For quick and easy meals, I have been using the weight watchers prepared meals which are suprisingly tastey.

I am 5ft 8 and weighed 13stone 13lbs two weeks ago. Meaning I am nearly obese according to the body mass index. For the past 2 weeks I have been watching what I eat and going swimming twice a week. I now weigh 13stone 7lbs which I am pleased the healthy eating/ fitness plan seems to be working although I am still suffering from cravings and need motivation from you nice mnetters!

My waist is around a size 12 which is fine by me but all my fat seems to collect on my thighs and bum, meaning I have to buy size 18 jeans just to fit over my legs and then they just gape and look horrid around my waist. Nothing fits comfortably on my bottom half, I am so out of proportion.

I have 20 month old ds who keeps me busy but I do feel that having eaten all his left overs and snacking everytime he does for the past 20 months has not been kind to my wobbly bits!!

So that's the story so far.... anyone want o join in or share their stories??

I need a kick up the butt to lose some weight. Was horrified the other week to see I was up to 12 st 4 (im 5'6 ish) which is over half a stone heavier than I was last August, and its all on my tummy.

I still fit in size 14, but with a significant muffin top / spare tyre. My last job was pretty active - on my feet all day and up and down stairs. Now the only thing left from that job is well toned calves.

Now Im a CM. Better weather will get me out walking again, with a single or double buggy, depending on the day, but I need to stop eating so much bread and pasta. Again, better weather helps with that - I find it easier to eat salad when its sunny outside!

Is there a site I can go to which will calculate my ideal body weight acurately?

Lmccrean - I don't know of any websites which work out what your weight should be for you - but I have a spreadsheet which I used to convert my own height into the weight for different BMIs.

I've just changed it to 5ft 6 (I'm 5ft7) and the figures are:

BMI
28 = 12st 5
27 = 11st 13
26 = 11st 7
25 = 11st 1
24 = 10st 9
23 = 10st 3
22 = 9st 10
21 = 9st 4
20 = 8st 12

So, if you want to get back down to within the "healthy" BMI range, you'd need to be aiming to get down to 11st 1 or under. How much lower you'd want to go is obviously down to you, and your overall build. HTH!

Lmccrean · 31/03/2009 12:48

Thats great! Thanks AMIS.

Did a google search and used the first site that came up, and it says I should be between 9 and 10st, which I was before having dd 6 years ago but I think that 10 1/2 is more realistic for me.

On plus side, if I manage 2lb loss per week I could be at 1 1/2 stone lighter and a "good enough" weight by my birthday...ideal opportunity to get new clothes so a great thing to focus on

On negative side, my tesco delivery just arrived - mainly easter goodies.

And since everyone else is doing it...today Ive had...6 cups of coffee and no food. Not a great start huh?!

Off to do some energetic housework and will be back this evening to read through thread properly and hopefully get some ideas for good exercise dvds

AMumInScotland · 31/03/2009 13:06

That's why I think a lot of websites about weight are very bad - they often say we "ought" to be at the lower end of the BMI, when for a lot of people even aiming to get back down to 25 is going to be a massive help for their health. If people think they're "failing" by not being skinny, or that they have to aim so low they know they're never going to manage it, then they'll give up before they even start, and where's the good in that!

It's better to have an aim that is manageable, then give yourself a pat on the back, then try for another goal. That way, you feel positive about what you're achieving, and feel motivated to keep going.

savageisfat · 31/03/2009 13:43

I am in need of some motivation mnetters! I nearly slipped and ate ds left over pasta. I'm not even hungry, what's wrong with me????!!! Had a few spoonsfull but left most of it.... very reluctantly!

Sneaked back on as Ive done a fair bit of work outside including planting some quick growing salad leaves that Ive been meaning to do for a few weeks, and only got another 5 mins before first school run.

What sort of goals do you set yourselves? Like a weekly aim? Monthly? Or amounts of exercise per day? Do you involve other family members?

AMumInScotland · 31/03/2009 13:53

So why did you want it, if you're not hungry? Do you feel you shouldn't "waste" food, or is it a habit, or did it look really tasty, or what? I think if you know why you do things, it helps stop you.

You can also remind yourself of why you want to lose weight - health, appearance, whatever it is that you want to change about yourself. So, yes I want it, but I want to lose weight more.

Lmccrean · 31/03/2009 13:58

But you left most of it! Thats a great show of willpower in my opinion! Well done

deegward · 31/03/2009 14:02

I need to join this 5ft 3 and 12 stone 8

AMumInScotland · 31/03/2009 16:57

Hello deegward!

caramelwaffle · 31/03/2009 17:01

Welcome deegward!

thesockmonsterofdoom · 31/03/2009 17:18

Hi deegward,
well I have been quite good today, cant do a lot of excercise as I fell over yesterday and really hurt my knee although obviously still had to do school run etc.

fraggletits · 31/03/2009 17:26

Welcome deegward

Period just started today. Thought it was going to actually as have been really bloated/spotty/ravenous-for-junk for the last.... 8 months.....anyway, I'll be kind on myself today and then like AMIS says - challenge yourself every time you want to eat something you shouldn't.

nannyegg · 01/04/2009 11:53

I've been having a horrendous time of it. Kitchen has been in a mess for days now so I've not been able to organise proper meals, and have been picking. I havent had time to get on the wii fit or get out with the dog.

Argh, I need a serious kick up the arse. It's my birthday this weekend as well.

But - the kitchen is done so can get back to proper cooking. I've been good so far today - weetabix and tea, and I'm popping home for a sandwich at lunch time.

All in all, it doesn't bode well for the weigh in tomorrow.

Welcome to deegward. Sockmonster, how is your knee today?

savageisfat · 01/04/2009 11:55

Lmccrean Thanks I felt better for what you said luv!!!

Amuminscotland, I think I wanted it because it smelled and looked yummy and as you said, it is a habbit. I have always eaten his leftovers as we did baby lead weaning so he has just eaten basically what we ate and really tasty chunks of food which are just too tempting to leave! I am slowly trying to break the habbit though.

I went swimming last night and it felt like I sort of got back 'in the zone' a bit. I remembered that all the tasty treats I miss will still be there to enjoy in moderation when I am slimmer and healthier and that nothing can possibly taste as good as being slim will feel.

I have set myself a goal of 2lbs a week as that seems realistic (although I fear I will not reach my target this week ladies!) also I am really trying to walk more lately too. Instead of waiting for dh to come home from work at 3:30pm an take me and ds into town or wherever we need to go, I am walking up hill to town with the pushchair and just generally trying to move more!

How's everyone's day going??

OP posts:
AMumInScotland · 01/04/2009 12:31

A mixed day so far - unfortunately a colleague brought in some chocolates yesterday, so I had a few then and a few more today, despite having decided on my way to work that I would avoid them.... . But hopefully I'll stop now I've had lunch.

I was doing very well earlier in the month, but my weight seems to have stuck steady for the last couple of weeks, so I need to focus again - I've obviously lost concentration!

Lmccrean · 01/04/2009 13:34

AMIS Do you allow yourself any "treats" normally? Arent they ok in moderation?

Savage - thats great about getting swimming How far is it for you to walk into town?

And I hope you dont mind, but Ive just stole your phrase "nothing can possibly taste as good as being slim will feel" and written it on a piece of paper and stuck it on my fridge

Last night I wrote down all I had eaten in last few days and rough cal count. I realised with the 10 massive mugs of coffee I drink a day, Im prob consuming 800 -1000 calories in milk! (50cal per 100ml) Between that and skipping meals, Ive been v naughty!

Had a herbal tea this am, but head was thumping by 9.30 so I had a small coffee (1/3 normal size) and headache vanished.

Porridge with fruit for breakfast, and an hour walk before and after tots group.
Was planning to walk for longer after tots but it seems my trainers arent comfy over long distances and my feet are all tingly and Im sure they will blister Home and had soup and a bread roll with water.

Have lots of lovely fruit all prepared in fridge for snack later.

Also have stepper sitting in living room now, and will hopefully get on it before dinner for 30 mins if my feet arent as sore as I suspect they will be! Otherwise Ill sit on chair and lift tins of beans to work on my arms a bit

AMumInScotland · 01/04/2009 15:15

Oh I do have lots of treats - the problem for me is that an open box of chocolates within my line of sight does not make for "moderation" . I've had quite a few more this afternoon, having said I'd try not to since I had a perfectly adequate lunch. Now I've moved them so I can't see them, which should reduce the temptation a bit, I hope...

I also have treats at home when DH and DS are having them, so if they fancy a biscuit in the evening I'll join them, and we always have cake in the afternoon at weekends.

The trouble is that, given a free choice, I'll have lots of treats, then skimp on meals, then have more treats . And chocolate is specially problematic, because I don't think there's such a thing as a small amount - if I hadn't had any, they wouldn't be calling to me from behind the filing cabinet...

AMumInScotland · 01/04/2009 15:17

So, yes treats in moderation are a good idea, but chocolate and moderation don't go together for me very well.

thesockmonsterofdoom · 01/04/2009 16:45

my knee is a lot better today thanks, I have been good until just now, I think I must have pmt and I spent an hour shouting and grumping at the dc for no reason, then i ate some hocolate, now I feel beter.

plusonemore · 02/04/2009 07:37

hi all, beenn ok ish, nothing terrible but not good enough to be losing weight! I need to do something about my hunger- like drink more water- cos I could just eat and eat. Out for luch today too...

fraggletits · 02/04/2009 08:20

Ok so if we are all still weighing in today then.....I'm 10st 11, that's a loss of 1 pound

savageisfat · 02/04/2009 09:51

lmccrean lol about writing the mantra on your fridge! I might do that too!!! It's about 30 minute walk into town and it's up a steep hill so I always think it counts as a work out!!

Not sure what today's weigh in will bring. Not been a terrible week but certainly had 3 days of eating the wrong foods so we'll see. I usually go to the scales in Boots as I don't own any at home (mainly because I get obsessed and started to weigh myself before and after I poo just to see if it made any difference !!!).

I'll let you know how it goes later. Been good so far but plenty of time to be tempted yet!

sockmonster glad your knee is ok. I just shouted at ds too (I feel terrible, he's only 20 months old but I think I may be hormonal too! which will spell disaster for the healthy eating)
