Starting Blood Sugar diet today

Fast800goingforit · 16/03/2026 08:07

I need a massive kick up the backside, have a big event in early May and have been finding it so difficult to motivate myself for anything really. I'm a member of a great small class gym which provides dietary support, but stress and sleep problems have destroyed my motivation.

So today I start the 8 Week Blood Sugar Diet as I've completely lost my grip on any kind of sensible eating and hopefully will lose some weight quite quickly and regain motivation.

I've been drinking too much wine, eating too much chocolate, etc. Past couple of weeks I've also strayed into just eating too much full stop. As the days get longer I'm going to get out in the garden and rediscover my mojo. Please wish me luck!

Hmm - not going quite so well today, but I had a terrible night and a migraine. Ate an extra 100 calories than I intended for breakfast...So need a sensible choice of something to keep me going until dinner. But I'll do it.

I had a ramshackle lunch 2 eggs, 3 egg whites, strawberries, a pickle, and cottage cheese - not all mixed together!

I don't know what dinner will be I think I have tofu and edamame in the freezer so I should be able to swing a stir-fry with the veg we have on hand,

100 calories wont break the camels back @Fast800goingforit just get back in the zone, do some extra steps if possible and remember 900cals is still a deficit if you do go over Flowers

Fast800goingforit · 18/03/2026 16:36

Yes, I thought that. Iirc, when I did it a decade ago I just followed recipes in the book and didn't properly track calories. I remember calculating the calories in a few things and thinking they were higher than the book stated so it clearly wasn't a big deal. Anyway I had fat free Skyr and some protein powder.

I'm glad to hear your lunch wasn't all mixed together 😁

When I did bsd years ago the secret was always to keep the carbs under 50g and an extra 100 or so calories wasn’t too much of an issue, you’re still in a huge deficit

Fast800goingforit · 19/03/2026 08:33

Like I said, I wasn't tracking anything last time, just going off recipes in the book. Anyway the first couple of days are the hardest then you get into it.

Oh that’s a good rule of thumb. Will try for that. Thank you!

Your fridge and freezer contents sound like mine! Lots of odd stuff. I have boiled up a batch of eggs for emergency snacks with cucumber. Hairdressers today (taking a long lunch break and started early/will work late) and then off for two different walks with friends. Had very tough reformer Pilates this morning and am bored of being the fatty in the class. Hoping I can shift 10kg but tbh would be v happy with 6

HairsprayBabe · 19/03/2026 09:07

@Fasterthan40 preboiling eggs is a great shout, I have a bunch of the "lunchable" style snack boxes for the kids so I think I am going to pre portion some snacky lunches for next week - once we have shopped

If I remember from last time I used to do basically the same thing for lunch every day then I would cycle between about 8 dinners

Need to get some Greek yogurt in that was always my go to lunch, with berries, flax and pumpkin seeds.

Lunch today is tuna salad lettuce boats then I think we are doing shakshuka for dinner which works great for BSD - no bread obviously and sadly!

Diet job of the day is meal plan and shopping list for next week, I have a girls trip coming up this time next month in Cardiff and would love to have made good progress by then so I can ruin it with cocktails and Welsh cakes

Fasterthan40 · 19/03/2026 09:30

haha, similar have something planned for 1st May so would love to be feeling nice for that. I am doing Greek yogurt and seeds for lunch. But going to steal your tuna lettuce boats idea. Might do lettuce wrap steak fajitas over weekend too. And yes, I think it’s a good idea to have a few meals on rotation as removes the thought and potential for excuses. I remember doing an ersatz cauliflower and brocolli cheese with soft cheese and a bit of parmesan mixed in. That was filling and didn’t have many non veg calories to it.

Autumngirl5 · 19/03/2026 09:46

I did the Human Being diet last year which was excellent and similar to the BS diet.
Petronella who devised HBD advises against exercise except walking for the first 26 days as it’pushes our flight or fight mode and raises our cortisol. The best exercise for lowering cortisol is walking’.
Good luck everyone! I am joining you.

Fasterthan40 · 19/03/2026 10:24

That’s interesting. I was trying 36 hour fasts last year but didn’t lose weight and was advised this was maybe because of cortisol. So that makes sense.

HairsprayBabe · 19/03/2026 10:43

I wouldn't read too much into the cortisol stuff its a lot of woowoo fasting can increase serum cortisol but this is looked at as an adaptive physiological response rather than a negative stress effect, and will get you burning energy stores and only long term (10 days+) will you see increased "bad" cortisol intermittent fasting is unlikely to cause cortisol weight gain, it is just overeating in non fasting periods

HairsprayBabe · 19/03/2026 10:46

If I remember from the book MM was a proponent of HIIT cardio, going as hard as possible for 20-30 seconds then back to a walking or jogging/cycling pace

Fast Exercise » Welcome to HIT: fitter, stronger, better

Maybe that as I am very good at overeating in any circumstance really.

HairsprayBabe · 19/03/2026 11:03

@Fasterthan40 me too!

Fasterthan40 · 19/03/2026 15:34

Just seen that someone is selling a bundle of all the Michael Mosley fasting and BSD books for £1.50 on Vinted. Quite low postage too. She is also selling size 20 clothing so assume it worked for her and she no longer needs!

Fast800goingforit · 20/03/2026 07:41

Well that's great isn't it? Here's hoping it was successful for her and she didn't throw the towel in a pay for weight loss injections instead!

Things are going okay and I've got an easy lunch to take to work today. I plan to post my weight loss on Monday as I'll have done a week then. The mental side of trying to lose weight is the toughest part for me. I've had a terrible night's sleep again.

Can I join this ? 2 stone overweight, had 2 babies in 16 months and as I have pcos, all fat goes to my stomach. I started exercising this week and want to start eating more healthy, my problem is carbs. Any ideas what I can eat for lunch? This is the meal I struggle with usually. I had gestational diabetes with one of my toddlers so I know HOW to eat healthily but I can’t stick to it consistently without getting the shakes as my body is craving sugar!

How little are your babies and are you still bring them? I had awful sugar and carb cravings whilst I fed- assume it’s your body making sure you don’t run out of fuel!
my lunches have mostly been Greek yogurt, kefir, protein powder, seeds, ginger and berries or half a frozen banana. It wouldn’t win prizes. But also two boiled eggs, some cucumber and tomato. Or chicken and veg soup (soften soffritto, add chicken and simmer in stock). Would any of those work?
Congratulations on two babies in such a short time too, that is a real life change in less than a year and a half!

I suffer from guilt so actually sleep better when I am eating “well” and don’t feel like I have failed to make the right choices. But that’s not fun, sorry to hear.

HairsprayBabe · 20/03/2026 11:08

I am always hungrier after poor sleep -I miss breastfeeding so much it was the one time in my life I could eat whatever I wanted! I was so skinny 😩
I gained the "baby weight" after I stopped breastfeeding - but kept eating unlimited hobnnobs!

@teletubbyy I had 2 in 18m too it was brilliant but very crazy! How old are your children now?

Fast800goingforit · 20/03/2026 11:36

@teletubbyy - you're very welcome. Do you have a copy of the book? It has lots of recipe ideas. I'm having cottage cheese and smoked salmon again today. Eggs are a great choice as is lower fat cheese like Feta with veg sticks and houmous. Salad of cooked chicken with chopped celery, apple and a small handful of walnuts or pecans and Greek yoghurt dressing.

Have had a good Saturday so far: banana collagen milkshake and coffee for breakfast after a swim and sauna, then tuna (with yogurt not mayo) and grated red cabbage and carrot and parsley. Tonight kids and DH having Indian. I think I may have omelette or chickpeas and do mustard greens as a side for all.

Fasterthan40 · 21/03/2026 16:42

Hope that you are all enjoying the sunshine and feeling positive.

Fast800goingforit · 21/03/2026 17:42

Got my steps in today and have also done the shopping including asparagus and kalettes to ring the changes. Tomorrow I'll be gardening for as long as possible.
