That's rubbish @poorpaws I'm really sorry to hear it. It sounds incredibly frustrating that they're both referring you back to the other. That doesn't help you at all. Can you complain? Would that help? No idea anymore.

I've been quiet as been worse healthwise and my weight has been fluctuating. Currently I've lost some compared to the start so I will take it. Really tired and in pain so trying to do my best food wise and not succeeding very well!

poorpaws · 20/07/2026 16:13

@Specialneedsnightmare. It’s so difficult when you don’t feel well isn’t it. It’s good news that you have lost some weight though, I’m sure you’ll be happy with that. Very well done given the circumstances.

I'm rock bottom atm by I’m sure I’ll pick up by tomorrow

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/07/2026 17:13

Could you consult PALS @poorpaws, maybe what you do need is both consultants together , even if it was on teams not in person. You have definitely not had this dealt with properly, poor you.

I’m feeling a bit better but still grotty and really tired. I have come on another period, this time only 13 days since my last 😱 hopefully my new HRT regime will help. Eventually.

diet has gone ok today but I’m not really feeling in a great mood, I’m tired and I want to use my new gym room but I don’t feel well enough.

OP posts:
poorpaws · 20/07/2026 17:36

@thenewaveragebear1983 it must be so upsetting staring at your lovely gym and not being well enough to use it. I know I keep repeating myself but I hope you improve very soon.

I am not doing anything until I speak to the physio specialist in 10 days. The last time I saw him three weeks ago, he thought there was little more he could do so I’m going to report what the surgeon said and see if we can’t come to some agreement.

It was a very very complex operation with many things wrong in a very tiny area. I was told that not many surgeons would’ve even attempted it. I don’t think anyone realised the scale of deterioration until well after the operation. Both consultants are now blaming arthritis in the hand as a significant factor but I think this is a good excuse since x-rays were taken originally and they knew already that there was a significant arthritis problem as well as all the other medical issues.

I just wish they would admit it has failed. I am very aware that a lot of operations do fail and I was warned at the outset that it was a possibility. The surgeon definitely doesn’t want to do the second operation, especially since my hand hasn’t recovered properly from the first operation.

I think today I just went into quiet shock, I didn’t say any of the things I’d prepared to say and I just sat quietly listening to all the excuses and the exact repeat of what he’d said previously. If it’s failed, I can deal with it. I just can’t bear this keeping on with physio when nothing‘s working.

Anyway, so far today I haven’t eaten any more than normal apart from a small latte at the hospital because we were so early. I haven’t done much all afternoon except I’ve sat quietly not speaking to anyone but if it gets cooler, I will take the dogs later to get some air, it’s not their fault. We’ll see what happens in 10 days.

Specialneedsnightmare · 20/07/2026 20:59

Thanks @poorpaws I'm definitely pleased with any loss. I'm so sorry you're going through this and it makes total sense that you don't want to keep on with physio if that's not going to benefit you. Unfortunately it seems to be the case all too often that different health professionals don't communicate with each other. I had a nightmare dealing with my mums care for this reason. I really hope there's a resolution somewhere. It must be hard enough knowing the surgery probably failed. I really feel for you.

@thenewaveragebear1983 so sorry you're not feeling good and that you've got another period. Mine have been weird too as I had none for 5 months and then a really heavy one. Peri is worsening my existing health issues. It's really stressful. I hope the hrt helps you.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/07/2026 06:59

@poorpaws I hope they can sort this for you. Don’t give up hope. Is the nerve damaged do you think? I wonder if some acupuncture could help? I never thought I would get my facial nerve properly working after Bell’s palsy, but it has, eventually gotten to a state where I don’t notice it every day any more.

@Specialneedsnightmare sorry you’re not feeling good either. Peri absolutely knocked me for 6 a few years ago, I was expecting the physical but nothing prepared me for the mental health symptoms I experienced, which is how I ended up on HRT in the first place, although now the physical ones are starting too. Hopefully this new regime will help.

I had a false start yesterday, too much delicious birthday food leftover that couldn’t keep and I don’t just want to throw it away. I’m sure that’s a false economy but still, I can’t. So I had one more day of holiday food 😋 my boring Tesco order is coming today though. I still don’t feel great, not well enough for a run and I will really try to get into my gym maybe for a little yoga just to try it out. I’m not going to the office today though which is a good thing. Food today is sorted, i’m going to try to hold off breakfast (largely because we have nothing in) and for lunch I have a leftover lamb cutlet with some asparagus, I’m just going to chop it all up into a salad with some balsamic dressing. Dinner, I have a few things on order this week- I’ve bought the ingredients to make a couple of different one pot things that I have seen on videos, I’ve got some nice seasoning for chicken, and I’ve got sausages for a sausage pasta (I am trying some veggie ones) - I’ll see what I fancy

OP posts:
poorpaws · 21/07/2026 07:50

@thenewaveragebear1983 no it’s nothing to do with nerves. The latest problem is ligaments which go centrally over the knuckles and mine have slipped to one side so my fingers go to the side too. The knuckles have arthritis so they probably won’t hold the ligaments in place even if operated on. This was nothing to do with the first operation, it’s been found during physio and it’s why the physio isn’t working, anyway enough of the hand drama.

i did well yesterday despite my low mood. I really thought I’d graze all evening but I went for a walk and didn’t want to eat after it so ended on about 1,250 cals.

shopping this morning and it will be a boring one too Bear, lots of salad, prawns (my latest low cal protein go-to) and fruit. I need a 1 lb loss this week to keep me on track and lighten my mood.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/07/2026 17:20

@poorpaws maybe an early evening walk is key to the grazing? It might do something to balance blood sugar? and I suppose even if it doesn’t at least it burns some calories pre-emptively

I feel a bit better this afternoon but all day I have had a horrible groggy feeling that I cannot shake off, and such heavy aching legs. I realised afterwards that maybe this is nothing at all to do with my cold and maybe it’s my new medication? Now I am on progesterone tablets, maybe that is a side effect, I am sure they can cause tiredness. Anyway I took ibuprofen and feel a bit better now. I’m still hot, is anyone else just feeling a bit bored of it now? 🤣

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/07/2026 06:56

Morning, feeling a lot better today! Hurrah, I hate being unwell.

my boring shop came yesterday, ended up on 1500 cals so right on target. Today I’m going to try to delay breakfast til mid morning at least, then for lunch I have a leftover spicy rice with loads of veggies and pork mince. Dinner will be chicken, probably a tray bake with some new potatoes and salad. I bought some new seasoning which will make an easy dinner. Snacking as always is my downfall but I don’t think there is actually anything too terrible in the cupboards. I am going to test out a little run at lunchtime as well, I am a bit worried at how the impact of weeks of hot weather followed by illness will have impacted my training, I have a marathon to run in 3 months 😱

Hope everyone is doing ok. Enjoy the weather, it looks to dip down into the low 20’s here at the weekend and rain, how exciting! The grass will benefit from that for sure, it’s like straw.

OP posts:
poorpaws · 22/07/2026 10:15

@thenewaveragebear1983 I’m so happy to hear you feel better. Don’t do too much too early, you don’t want to feel unwell again.

yesterday was ok but not brilliant. I think I had about 1,600 cals which is a bit higher than I’d hoped. I did the evening walk as usual but it was so hot again that a couple of quite low cal fruit ice lollies tipped me over my allotted amount.

I will try harder today but I’m struggling with low mood and that’s when I want to snack more. I’ve got loads of fruit in so I’ll hopefully eat some of that instead of mindless grazing.

this morning I’ve been looking at old weight notes and a pattern is definitely forming. Since 2023 every time I get to 11 st 3lbs/11st 2.5 lbs I go back up again, it’s happened loads of times and I haven’t really realised. I was exactly 11 st 3 lb on Monday morning and now that I am aware I am determined to lose weight and get under this figure. Sometimes if you can notice a pattern in the past it gives determination to not continue that pattern so I need to try harder this week.

I hope everyone is keeping well and happy. I find this very hard to believe but even I, a sun worshipper, is getting a bit fed up of it now.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/07/2026 19:06

11.3 is my yo-yo weight too @poorpaws, I just cannot get past it and certainly cannot stay there if I do! It’s like I’m on an elastic string!

OP posts:
poorpaws · 22/07/2026 19:12

I’m just about to take the dogs out. Today has not been too bad, I haven’t binged as I might have considering my mood. I’ll have a packet of low fat crisps before bed and call it done today,

@thenewaveragebear1983 I love the elastic string analogy, that’s exactly what it feels like. I so want to get a lower figure this week and next.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/07/2026 18:05

It’s annoying isn’t it? I’m on holiday in 2 weeks now and still just bobbing around. I do think I am looking trimmer but the scales do not correspond!

yesterday I made a big tray bake of chicken breast, seasoning, new potatoes and Mediterranean veg, fit lunch I have had a big scoop of that with salad. I have enough left for tomorrow too. Tonight I’m going to do a sausage pasta but I’m enjoying a few rays first. I’ve had a good few days at work but i feel tired after being unwell and my job has ramped up a gear because I’ve been given my objectives now and they are quite a lot. Then trying to get things tidy and do some training, it’s a lot. I am really really really looking forward to my holiday now, 2 weeks to go!

can’t believe it’s Friday again tomorrow, and payday! Thank goodness. We have no weekend socials and to be honest I want a quiet one, it’s going to be a bit cooler and may even rain so a nice long run, a workout, and some gardening and housework to put everything back in order. Foodwise, I planned some simple meals- a chilli, a paella etc. trying to have a few cheaper weeks before we go away.

Scales seem to be stuck a t 15.0 stone. I was convinced I was down at least an lbs. I feel slimmer though. I'm going to try keep to more soup / veg drinks and reminding myself it will show later on the scales. Going to try keep off ice cream and pasties also.

poorpaws · 24/07/2026 09:52

Good morning everyone, I hope you are all well.

I am going shopping with DD today and we normally have a picnic in the car of M&S crusty bread and loads of fillings and all nice food that we don’t buy regularly. I’ve been extra good having thought about my weight and how much bread I get through on these picnics so I’ve made an egg mayo sandwich and some crisps. It’s not quite the banquet we normally have but hopefully that will keep me on track. I will just have to watch DD devour the lovely crusty bread which I adore but needs must when you want to be thinner.

TalkToTheHand123 · 24/07/2026 10:59

Aww DP commented about me buying white bread the other day which made me focus a little and made me try to cut down. I love my bread so good luck @poorpaws !

I currently have a mountain of rice which I didn't ask for to try resist over the next few days. I have some foods I wish to use up in the cupboards. Some cereals and other bits and bobs but try to keep to soup and frozen fruits as my main source.

Specialneedsnightmare · 24/07/2026 15:33

Well I've seen a private doctor and I have to change my diet a bit to try and improve my health issues. I'm also on more medication. My diet is already basic and has to be focused on meat but most sauces and tomatoes are a no go. I can't have diary as allergic. I just hope I can do this and still lose weight. I love my chocolate and don't think I can cut it out but I want to feel better. I'm not great with grains either. Very restrictive. I have got some more meal ideas from the doctor though and there's a makeshift sauce in place of tomatoes.

Hope everyone is coping. Losing weight is hard especially when there's other stuff going on. I eat sugary good for comfort too.

poorpaws · 24/07/2026 16:39

@Specialneedsnightmare. That sounds really difficult to deal with and I hope you manage to enjoy some of the food on such a restrictive diet, I do feel for you.

the best laid plans went through the window today. DD wanted MacDonalds and I’d got my sandwiches so didn’t want one but I offered to sit inside whilst she and the kids ate theirs. Sadly they wouldn’t hear of it. I was telling her how I’d been fancying fish and chips from a particular shop and that DP wouldn’t go (as usual). Immediately DD turned the car around and we ended up sitting near the beach eating them so not a good day for the diet but a lovely treat.. I am having the egg sandwiches for tonight’s meal instead. 🤦🏼‍♀️
@TalkToTheHand123 thank you for the good luck wishes but they definitely didn’t work.

I’ll try again tomorrow although I might be going to DDs in the evening for a cooling drink on the decking. It’s so difficult to stay on track just now.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/07/2026 17:35

It is really hard in the summer isn’t it? Too much temptation. And surely the extra hours of daylight make a difference too, there’s time for an extra meal! I’ve had a really long week with a lot of brain work this week. Glad it’s the weekend!

I’ve not eaten badly today so far, I made a pasta salad with lentil pasta and a cottage cheese dressing but it’s not nice so that helped! I had a wrap with houmous and salad and prawns, and after work I had half a chicken breast. I am really trying to increase my protein intake and switch out carbs for protein but it’s hard. I could have happily eaten a lot of rubbish today if it had been available.

not sure whether to have a drink tonight, I wasn’t going to but then now I fancy one. 🤔 I’m going to listen to my hypnosis and see how I feel after that

OP posts:
HazelNotHungryLC · 24/07/2026 20:28

@poorpaws I'm so sorry to hear about your hand. Try not to beat yourself up for what you ate for lunch. It sounds like your DD wanted to treat you to what you fancied. As long as you enjoyed every mouthful and stopped when you were full, I don't see anything wrong with it.

@thenewaveragebear1983 & @TalkToTheHand123 when the scales aren't moving but my body is changing I have to remember to keep plodding on, because eventually the scales do catch up. It's frustrating though if it lasts for more than a couple of weeks. Hopefully you'll see the numbers change on the scale soon, but in the meantime focus on how your clothes are fitting and how you are feeling overall!

@Specialneedsnightmare I'm so sorry your diet has to be so restrictive. You mention being allergic to dairy - doesn't chocolate contain dairy or have you found one that's dairy free? I would really struggle with cutting out dairy, so I really feel for anybody that doesn't have a choice.

I have been doing pretty good overall, having taco salad, fajita bowl and a fajita salad.. hmmm, very Mexican week apparently!
I have seen a loss this week as well: 3.3lbs down!
I'm currently at 162lbs, so still a bit to go before I'm at my goal weight. I know I have more inches to lose as well though and need to focus more on salads and less alcohol.

Specialneedsnightmare · 25/07/2026 06:37

@HazelNotHungryLC there are plenty of delicious dairy free chocolate options thankfully but the problem is I'm not great with chocolate itself, plus sugar really makes me quite ill. I've been allergic to dairy all my life so I'm used to it, but in context with my other problems it all feels really hard.

I can't tolerate histamine so I often feel like I have a terrible fluey cold and this worsens with nearly everything I eat. Perimenopause has worsened matters as the hormones losses destabilise mast cells.

Started on a mast cell stabiliser medication plus supplements and I just hope I feel better. My weight is staying ok I think. I will check in on Monday. My other problem is red meat is one of thr better foods for me, but not for my weight!

Wishing all of you as good weekend as possible.

poorpaws · 25/07/2026 08:17

Oh my word I had an eating frenzy from hell last night and I had been doing so well until then. It’s as if a lunchtime meal makes me hungry, it makes no sense I know. I very rarely eat a big lunch, it’s usually fruit and yogurt or just a big bowl of watermelon but when I do go out for lunch it opens the floodgates and I binge all evening as if I’m starving. I’ve noticed this before but there is a pattern I hadn’t realised was quite as bad as it is.

i know if I hadn’t gone out yesterday, if I’d had melon for lunch I would have been fine all evening but the fish and chips, which were a huge portion, sent me off into an evening of eating hell.

back to the drawing board, back to a small lunch and I cannot believe I’ve deviated from my diet quite as badly as I have 🤦🏼‍♀️ will i ever learn <sigh>.

@SpecialneedsnightmareI really hope you feel better soon, it sounds so hard for you. I am thinking of you and hoping your new regime works well.

I hope you are all having a lovely weekend in the sunshine.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/07/2026 13:26

@poorpawshave you ever had your insulin levels checked? Or a prediabetes check? A lot of your eating ‘behaviours’ (for want of a better word) really sound like insulin resistant, pre diabetes type things. Particularly the fact if you eat more you end up more hungry than if you eat less or nothing. It’s like when you eat a big meal, your body responds by pumping out crazy amounts of insulin which drops your blood sugars low, so you feel starving even though you have had a big meal. I am the same, I always want something sweet after a meal and after lunch that’s my worst time for feeling sleepy and rooting around the kitchen cupboards. I also have said before, it’s like I don’t taste sugar like other people do, I could genuinely eat sugar at any time of day or night, and I have no off switch

@Specialneedsnightmarethat sounds so tough, it’s hard enough to diet without a long list of things you can’t tolerate

@HazelNotHungryLCthe hard thing for me is the scales never move, not really. I am stuck at this weight (maybe a swing of a few pounds either way) and have been for as long as I can remember. I don’t actually really care about the weight anymore, but I want to shift my doughy tummy and honestly, I just don’t feel like I have a slim shape anymore.

@TalkToTheHand123how are you doing?

I went out this morning to run a long run, I did 20kms but I was struggling in the heat, I hadn’t fuelled properly and I drank last night. But it’s done. I like to weigh in after a run as I see it as my lowest possible weight, no excess water 💦 11.1 - so that’s good, although as soon as I have rehydrated it will be back on. I’m now lying in my hammock, enjoying the rays, admiring my tan and looking at my legs because, whilst I do like a whinge, they are looking pretty toned. I actually think increasing my calories has had an impact on my muscle 💪

@Specialneedsnightmare that sounds really hard to live with, I'm so sorry 😞 I've got my fingers crossed for you that the new meds and supplements work for you. Peri is a bitch too on top of everything else!

@poorpaws don't beat yourself up for yesterday, draw a line under it and get back on track today. Drink extra water to flush out yesterday's food. Melon for lunch sounds so refreshing too 😋

@thenewaveragebear1983 I think I remember you saying you're going through peri also? I'll repeat what I said above: peri is a bitch! The last couple of years have been hell for me trying to lose weight, doing all the things I know work, for them not to work anymore 🤬
Isn't it crazy that increasing calories can have the opposite effect we think?

The last couple of nights we've had pork chops with courgette and creamy mushrooms for dinner. I don't know what's for dinner tonight as ILs are cooking, but it'll be good, I'm sure!
I don't eat breakfast, just have my creamy coffee, although I've added a scoop of collagen/ probiotics to my 1st cup and that adds 10g of protein as well (the thing I struggle to get enough of!).
Lunches have been leftover fajita salad from the Mexican restaurant we ate at the other day. One of the days I had Greek yogurt with berries and keto granola, so delicious 😋 I'll have to get more though as I'm all out of yogurt.

Specialneedsnightmare · 25/07/2026 15:08

Thank you all. I'm concerned because the medication I will start taking can lead to weight gain. Oh joy! But if I feel better on it I might have more impetus to eat better.

I can certainly relate to the downward spiral once you deviate from a diet. I do the same thing. All we can do is pick up and carry on.

Yoghurt are now out for me but im going to try and finish meals with acceptable fruit such as mango or berries to curb the cravings.

Later I'm having a turkey sandwich on gluten free bread with salad and cranberry sauce.

I think I have insulin resistance too BTW.
